The Gen16 Acoustic/Electric Cymbal System represents a paradigm shift in cymbal design from Zildjian. Utilizing patented reduced volume acoustic cymbals, patented cymbal pickup and Digital Cymbal Processor "DCP" to tone shape the sound of each cymbal the user can apply an array of tone shapes to each real Zildjian Gen16 cymbal. Unlike cymbal triggers, Gen16 cymbals may be played with sticks, rods or mallets. They can be brushed and choked like traditional cymbals because they are real cymbals.

The Gen16 Buffed Bronze cymbal produces a richer and warmer tone then the original Gen16 nickel-plated cymbal. The Direct Source pickup captures the pure acoustic sound of the Gen16 Buffed Bronze cymbal while it eliminates feedback, crosstalk, and phasing associated with microphones, making them perfect for live performance and practice. The DCP provides tone shape presets, volume and R/L pan control for up to five cymbals while allowing the user to blend external edrum controller audio and or an auxiliary audio input. It also has a powerful headphone output for on stage monitoring or silent drumming when using headphones.

In addition to the electronic components, this set includes a pair of 13" Buffed Bronze Hi-Hats, one 16 in. Buffed Bronze Crash and an 18 in. Buffed Bronze Crash Ride.

  • 13 in. Gen16 Buffed Bronze HiHats

  • 18 in. Gen16 Buffed Bronze Crash Ride

Gen 16 1st generation

Comments about Zildjian Gen16 Buffed Bronze 13/18/20 Acoustic-Electric Cymbal Pack:

This review is on the Gen16 1st generation (chrome) set. The 1st gereration set was equipped with audio pickups instead of the current direct pickups. I upgraded to the direct pickups as the audio pickups were terrible for feedback. These are great cymbals for practicing at home when your levels need to be very low. I did use this set for gigs. I play small venues and mixed genre. A high percentage of my audience are senior citizens. There is a major issue with the hihat voices in that they irritate those wearing hearing aids. I know most of you drummers probably won't have this issue but I thought it important to mention. It was so bad that I had to switch to standard acoustic cymbals. Gigging with electronic cymbals introduces complications that some of you may not be aware of. Set-up time is longer and then there is amplification. Do not run your Gen16s through your main system. Mixing with vocals does not work. It is much better to have a separate system for the cymbals. And, they don't sound to good through drum/keyboard amps either, in my opinion. So, if you are also using electronic drums, for a good sound, you'll have to have a system for the drums and a system for the cymbals. Talking about set-up time again. But, maybe you have roadies that can do all the hard work for you.

Comments about Zildjian Gen16 Buffed Bronze 13/18/20 Acoustic-Electric Cymbal Pack:

These are nice overall. I love the idea but the mounting hardware is cheap & the tomes are way too similar. For the $$$ they could be nicer and offer a more diverse array of cymbal sounds. The lights & settings are very cool!

Comments about Zildjian Gen16 Buffed Bronze 13/18/20 Acoustic-Electric Cymbal Pack:

These are great. Sounds more real then the nickel version to my ears. Still need lots of time to tune them in just right with the tone changing software. Hi hats still have the best tone and very little tone change needs to happen. I suggest getting to know the software well and check out some forums for some preset files to start with. I used these the other week in a very small (under 100) church and they worked great without being too loud in the room. Still looking forward the getting the 20" ride and china cymbals.
