I've slowly been upgrading all of my cymbals over the last 3 years, and my hi-hats were the last to be replaced. I've had the pocket hats for 2 weeks and will say I am extremely satisfied with them! I play almost anything but the bulk is rock, funk, metal...no matter what, these things fit right in. Exactly as advertised, they are highly stickable when closed tight, have a nice wash and tone when partially open, and the chick is killer. Tight, clean and crisp with an awesomely short sustain and high note that cuts through nicely. And lastly, the bright, hammered finish adds a nice bit of personality to my kit. All around outstanding!
I had, until about 5 years ago, 14" Zildjian K/Z hats. They were the best hats I've heard. When I purchased a new drum set, I needed new hats. I heard these hats on youtube a few times and really liked the sound. After playing them for a week I am convinced that I made a solid purchase. They have a great "chick" sound and are a little dry and very tight. I really like the 13" size too. Not too big and not too small. The slightly-open sound is great and the wide open sound is exactly what I wanted - sparkly without a lot of wash but not muted and overly dry. That may not seem like much of a description but that's the best way to state it. If you listen to Dave Abbruzzese on his Pearl Jam records, you will hear a similar sound on his hi hats. It's exactly the sound I wanted. They are described as "Pocket Hats" and I believe that is accurate. They are tight and cut though because of the extra heavy bottom hat but have a nice slightly dry sizzle when open due to the thin top hat. They are very comparable to my old K/Z hats at a lower cost. They have a little more high end and a very similar volume. If the K/Z sound is what you're looking for, these hats compare and are a little less expensive. And I believe they are a little more well rounded due to a higher top end. Excellent choice for me. They have a great unique sound that might be good enough for general purpose drumming as well.
