The Zildjian New Beats are considered the classic, versatile hi-hat. These can be used in straight ahead rock, funky jazz, hard metal, or soft ballads. Basically, the New Beats are designed to perform in just about any condition. When I play a gig with different styles of music, the New Beats always make their way into the cymbal bag. The bottom is slightly heavy, providing some weight and projection. The top is about an average weight hi-hat cymbal, allowing for a range of dynamics and expressions from a slightly open sizzle to fully closed tick to wide open thrash. These cymbals project without being overly loud. The New Beats have been the standard for decades, and I see no reason why that shouldn't continue. Whether recording or live, the New Beats are one of the most versatile and satisfying pairs of cymbals I've played.

I was very disappointed with these. I'm typically a Zildjian man and have heard nothing but praise about the new beat hi-hats. I have A Series all around (16" thin crash, 18" medium thin crash, 18" crash ride) except for my hi hats which are Sabian B8's, and while they're decent, especially for the price, I was looking to complete a cohesive set of A Series Cymbals. I was eager to take these out of the box and install them onto the stand, but was horrified by what I heard upon playing them. Not only are they incredibly shrill and high pitched, but there is a terrible ringing sound that accompanies the tone, and they're somewhat noisy as well. I was so displeased with them that I returned them and am sticking with my $80 B8's for now, and this is coming from a Zildjian person.

Comments about Zildjian A Series New Beat Hi-Hat Cymbal Pair:

They are Zildjian New Beats... how much more iconic can you get? Though their sound has changed over time from the '60s to now, they are still the same quintessential sound that all other hi hats are measured against. But, you know this because, otherwise, you wouldn't be considering them. I offer this: sometimes, for me, the sound is too "classic." I've owned three pairs of hi hats: Sabian HHX Evo's, Sabian AAX Metal Hats, and these. My favorites? The AAX Metal Hats. They fit me and my style of music. The Sabian HHX Evo's were a let down, and I got rid of them. Don't get me wrong, they sounded great, but my expectation of them was over the top, and they were just regular, everyday, good-sounding hats. As far as the New Beats? They're great too, but don't let your expectations run away from you. They sound good with any genre of music; they are that classic, quintessential hat sound. No more, no less. I have them on my practice kit at the house. They are durable and sound great, and if I ever need them to fill any gap, they'll always be standing by.

Great pair of hats and the chick is awesome. Can't go wrong with these. I got the 13", but have played both and decided to go with something different for me for a change. I've played 14" for years. Love these hats and looking forward to many years of service.

I got the 13" pair and love them! I had a pair of 12" special recording hats and these beat them hands down in my opinion. Very nice chick and nice wash when partially open. Wouldn't trade them for anything....well, you get the point. I think the other 70 something reviews are all in agreement as 4 or 5 star hats.

These were the first pair of hi-hats I bought. I've had them for 22 years. I've played hundreds of gigs, recordings, and practices. These are immortal. Great sound. I guess they have acquired a darker sound over the years, and I love them now more so. I don't need any other pair of hi-hats. These will do the trick for any gig, recording, and music type.

I really loved my old zildjian hi hats that I've had forever, but I couldn't resist a sale price for the New Beats. What a difference! Cut to the chase, buy the good stuff and sound like a pro. These hats are unbelievable!

These hi hats are extremely versatile, but i may not reccomend them to a metal or rock player playing them partially opened, as they may sound clangy. I use them primarily in a jazz setting. the chick is very cutting loud, and clean. best chick i've heard from a pair of hats. These hats are probably best used in a jazz, rock (closed), funk, or any other situation besides metal. Very musical cymbals, great for hihat grooves, but if you're wash riding with them partially open they may begin to sound clangy (it DOES vary from pair to pair though.)

I bought my first pair of 14" New Beats in 1988, and still play them to this day. I wanted a second pair of hats, as a matter of convenience, so I went shopping, and nothing I tried sounded as good as what I already had, so I ended up getting a new, second pair of Zildjian A 14" New Beat Hi-Hat cymbals, and I'm glad I did. They don't sound exactly the same as my old ones, but they still offer the same versatility, and possess the same level of sound quality and feel, as my original pair. I'm sure there are other good hats out there, but the 14" New Beats just sound "right" to me. So there you have it.

I bought these cymbals used, and I got to tell you, these hi-hats sound better than other hi-hats made from Zildjian. They make a clean "chick" sound and sounds goos when it's slightly open. I play jazz, rock, and latin and these cymbals make my playing 10 times better than the hi-hats that I was using earlier.

I bought these used off a friend. They are without a doubt the best hi-hats I've ever used. My favorite feature is the loud and defined "CLICK" you get from playing them closed! The loose and open sounds are fairly generic in relation to other hi-hats but in a good way. These things are THICK & HEAVY! Overall, great hats!
