This cymbal's trashy, noisy sound is as distinctive as its look.

For the first EFX cymbal in the K Series, Zildjian has combined the same die-cut pattern featured in its A Custom EFX cymbals with the darker tone and traditional look of the K cymbals. This cymbal has a thin weight and a crash-size bell, so the response, decay, and projection are good.

Its sound is a dark and explosive combination of trash and white noise.

Zildjian K EFX Cymbal Features:

  • 16"- or 18"-diameter
    Thin weight
Same "die cut" pattern as A Custom EFX cymbals
Darker tone than the A Custom EFX
    Good response and decay
    Traditional finish
    Crash-sized bell for good projection

  • Zildjian does it again!

As reviewed by BabyJables on 5/11/2010

This is one fantastic cymbal! I own the 18" and when I first played it, I fell in love and still am in love with it. It is an all around great cymbal! It has a fast decay, a dark trashy tone and cuts through great in the mix. Its great for riding on and could even replace a china. The holes in it look really good aesthetically and make this cymbal stand out from the rest. Overall, this is one beast of a cymbal.

  • Smooth and dark. Very versatile.

I'll say right off that I'm a huge fan of the K series and have been for many years now, but this one takes the cake. I use mainly Ks but have A hats and an 18" A Medium-Thin crash. Wanted something "trashy" but that wasn't too close to a china (I have two chinas already), more like a dark, trashy crash to augment my 16" K Dark Thin crash and the A. I tried the 20" A Custom EFX and, while it was a beautiful cymball, it was too heavy/thick sounding (too much harsh attack for me, not softer like the Ks). The Zildjian site calls the A EFXs "paper thin" and the K EFXs "thin." It's the other way around, I believe. The 20" A was substantially thicker and much heavier in weight/heftier than this 18" K. The 20" A was too bombastic and massive/long-sustaining for my uses, so I gladly tried the K. Perfect. The 18" K EFX is a very versatile piece of brass. Quick crashes, crash-riding, explosive end-of-fill crashes, nice dark washiness with hit near the edge with the stick tip: it's all possible with the K EFX. It's crashy enough to not sound like a china but distinctly different as a crash; complementary to my other two, and it fills up space beautifully when used as a crash-ride. It's quite honestly the nicest cymbal I've heard. Smooth attack, and dark, roaring, cutting, but not piercing in a harsh way. One to "play," not "hit." Buyer beware: these are thin cymbals. I don't break cymbals, but if you hit hard and tend to crack 'em, this one may not last long for you. Hit it the right way and it'll last, I'm sure, as all my Ks (even splashes) have for years. I play mathy metal and hit hard, but I'm careful with my brass; it's all in how you hit them.
