Overview

The ZVex Mastotron Effects Pedal, another in the Vextron series, is a heavy silicon-based fuzz pedal with a lot of controls-volume, tone, pulse width, fuzz, and relax/push. The relax/push controls the input impedance to the pedal. The guitar effects pedal knobs let you adjust for quieter pickups, or softer guitars, and turn it towards the relax setting as you put in active pickups, and turn it all the way to the relax setting for special effects and for line-level signals if you are re-amping a bass off a recorded track. The Mastotron's fuzz control is a wide control over the fuzz depth. Pulse width control goes from a narrow pulse all the way to a nearly square wave pulse. The tone control shaves off the high end. A sub switch lets you set how many subs you have with a "2-1-3" arrangement while the dedicated volume knob controls how loud the guitar pedal gets.

Plug your guitar (or any effect's output) into the input jack. Plug the output into an amp or other effect's input. Set the amp for a warm clean tone on bypass. Turn on the pedal and rock out. Using a guitar or bass, turn the Relax/Push knob down a bit if you need to until the fuzz sounds immediate and tight. Turn the Vextron Mastotron's fuzz control until you're happy, and set the PW to square (counter-clockwise). Adjust the tone for the treble amount you want, and use the sub switch on 3 for full heavy subs for bass or 2 if the subs are overloading your amp.

Set your amp on your favorite clean tone for the most blistering results, while a distorted sound can be very cool as well. Play it into your favorite distortion pedals or direct into the amp for different textures. Try putting weird effects into the ZVex Mastotron pedal and adjust the Relax/Push knob for best interfacing.

If the performance of your fuzz pedal seems diminished or the LED becomes very dim, it's time to change your battery. Remove the four screws on the bottom of the effect pedal and carefully remove and replace the old battery, putting it back exactly in the center of the pedal on edge so that it is gripped tightly by the lid when it is screwed back in place.

A Fat Fuzz Factory (Silicon-based) Fuzz

By JovyRey Fernandez

from Virginia

Comments about Zvex Vextron Series Mastotron Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

I love vintage fuzz pedals. Unfortunately, it's not really great when you use it in live situation, and does not cut well. I tried the Fat Fuzz Factory and did not like how it sounds pushes out in the amps. Too much manipulation needed to avoid the squealing. Fortunately, I found this silicon base version of the pedal. Although, it's more modern as it is it is the pedal is pretty much Fuzz Factory silicon based minus the squeeling, and it cuts very well live and sounds better in a small amp when you record. I highly recommend anyone looking for a Fuzz Factory that cuts well and does great in small amps for recording.

not worth it

By Lincoln

Comments about Zvex Vextron Series Mastotron Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

Zvex, the ultimate name in boutique effects. They've got the cool looking pedals, with cool names, and they cost a lot. So they must sound good too right? Wrong. This pedal is really weird. It adds an edge to your tone that varies depending on how hard you strike the note, but most of the sounds begotten from it are bad. Unless you really dig the weird sounds, don't get it. Get the fuzz factory instead it. Or use it just to add some edge to your tone. Not as a fuzz pedal.

Mastotron Review

By Dan S.

from Oregon City, OR

Comments about Zvex Vextron Series Mastotron Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've had this silicon transistor based fuzz for several months now. The tweakability of this fuzz pedal is unmatched. You can dial in everything from heavy wooly fuzz tones to more chiming overdriven sounds. This pedal also can clean up pretty well when backing off the volume on your guitar. A good product.

ZVEX Mastotron Fuzz is the king of Fuzz!

By Mike Danenberg

from Buffalo Grove, Illinois

Comments about Zvex Vextron Series Mastotron Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

ZVEX makes incredible pedals. They are known for their superior hand-wired pedals built here in the USA. The Mastotron is an incredible fuzz pedal. Want to have a fuzz similar to The Black Keys? Well this is it! The Mastotron has 5 controls that really shape your sound. Its a bass heavy and silicon based fuzz. You can get amazing low end with the 3 position sub switch. The tone knob only deals with treble which leaves the sub frequencies intact. You can turn up the Pulse Width knob to get a very fuzzy tone. This pedal has so many fuzz options! The pedal is built extremely well and is very durable. Its bright blue color looks real neat on your pedalboard. This pedal can also be compared to the ZVEX Fuzz Factory, which is a little more intense and slightly more expensive relative of the Mastotron. I would definitely recommend testing out the Mastotron by ZVEX. You won't be disappointed!
