Overview

Yamaha Reface keyboards are designed around the practical needs of contemporary musicians. The name of the series, "reface," is a conflation of the idea of reimagining and the legacy of Yamaha's many groundbreaking keyboard instrument interfaces. Among the innovations that is hearkens back to are the legendary Yamaha Combo Organ, DX7 and CS5 keyboards. This is the reface CP, which has as one of its chief orientations the thrilling electrified string pianos from the CP80.

The reface Series is small. Incredibly small. But unlike miniature keyboard instruments of the past, the reface touch is satisfying and expressive, and the sound is nothing short of spectacular. The reface family of keyboards features built-in speakers and is battery operable so you can create on the go. An aux line in allows you to play along with MP3 players or whatever other audio device you wish to use. Add MIDI and USB connectivity, and the reface's capacity to interface with external devices is vast.

Reface CP puts a van full of iconic '70s stage keyboards and vintage effects into a portable retro-styled package without sacrificing sound, playability or polyphony. Choose Tine, Reed, Clavi, Toy or classic Yamaha CP80 electric grand piano, then, enhance your sound using the built-in drive, modulation, delay and reverb effects.

WebMIDI and the reface Keyboard
It had to happen, so it did. WebMIDI. And of course, Yamaha is one of the first to offer a way to use it. WebMIDI connects MIDI devices to the internet, allowing musical instruments to play online synthesizers, as well as save or share sounds. Reface Mobile Mini Keyboards can use WebMIDI to songs to YouTube (video) and SoundCloud (audio).

BROWSE shows all available sounds (currently thousands), and you can refine your searches using tags. Once you find a sound you like, click on it and hit SYNC. This will send the sound to your connected reface and show them you to move the controls on your keyboard to recreate the sound. How cool is that?

Comments about Yamaha reface CP Mobile Mini Keyboard:

I have had my eye on the Reface models for quite some time and considered the CP first, but got the DX instead because I thought the number of sounds was too limited. After owning a DX for a little while, I found myself with two banks of nothing but my attempt at a Rhodes sound on the DX. The DX sounded nice for what it does, but I was thankfully able to exchange it for the CP...
    Now, about the CP...
This thing is fun! Small... yes. Garbage internal speakers... yes. Limited sound selection... (sort-of).
The unit has 6 sounds, five of which I use (I don't use toy).
The Rhodes sound incredible and extremely expressive and dynamic by themselves, but once you start adding in some effects, it really does open up another pallet of sounds. I now see why guitarists are constantly changing their effects around. It is fun, especially the delay section. I now understand why delay is a staple in their effect rigs. Compared to the DX, the effects on the CP are of much higher quality and sound much more lush and rich.
The Wurlitzer sound on this unit is by far the best I have ever heard on any keyboard I have played.
The CP sound is the closest thing this unit has to a piano sound. It is powerful and has a compressed tone that cuts through nicely. A truly unique sound by itself.
Back to the effects, it is surprising just how much the sound can be shaped with them. They really do sound good, much better than the two effect blocks on the DX, especially the reverb.
Overall I am very satisfied and would definitely replace it if it were lost or stolen.

Comments about Yamaha reface CP Mobile Mini Keyboard:

This keyboard will do double duty as an inspiration source in the living room and an inspiration source in the studio. I was surprised at just how good the electric piano sounds are on this keyboard. While I don't have the originals for comparison, I really don't care. The presets sound exactly like how I imagined them for my songs, and the keys respond well to touch. The effects are high quality and put a beautiful sheen on the tones. And best of all, it's portable. I took the new keyboard on a vacation and it was just as much fun on the go.

      Pros:

      Sound, sound, sound
      Excellent effects section
      Portability and battery power
      Inclusion of speakers
      Midi compatibility

      A few minor quibbles:

It's priced a little high for the number of features.
The little speakers start buzzing when the volume begins to get slightly ambitious.
It might be nice to have a couple of velocity playing settings so you don't always have to pound the tiny keys to get the bark and brightness of the pianos.
