Overview

If you're looking for a reasonably priced piano replacement, the YPG-235 is an excellent choice. It is the music student or professional musicians' answer to "I need more keys!" and a great solution for a keyboard that will grows with their needs of students. It features 76 non-weighted keys that not only look like piano keys but have a Graded Soft Touch (GST) action with different levels of resistance, making it easier for a budding musician to move to an acoustic or digital piano.

Full Keyboard Mode
The YPG-235 delivers on its piano theme with a special mode of fingering called Full Keyboard Mode. This allows you to play the keyboard like a piano; for example a chord with the right hand and bass notes with the left. When using the accompaniment feature, the virtual band will follow these chords. Traditional portable keyboards normally require you to chord on the left side of the keyboard, in the bass section, which is foreign to most piano players. However, the YPG-235 is also capable of this mode, for those who prefer or are used to it.

Yamaha Education Suite: Helps you learn to play
The YPG-235 has 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on included CD-ROM for you to learn to play using the Yamaha Education Suite. The songs are separated into left and right hand parts, providing 7 levels of lessons plus a convenient chord dictionary.

6-Track Sequencer
Imagine capturing your child's first performance or writing and recording your own songs. With the YPG-235, you have the equivalent of a built-in multi-track recorder to record one or multiple instrument parts at a time and assign each part to a different track. Six tracks are provided to accommodate sophisticated melodies, chord accompaniment and rhythm parts.

Computer Connectivity: USB and Flash ROM
Besides the 30 built-in songs and 70 more on the CD, the YPG-235 comes with the ability to connect to a computer via USB, so you can download more songs from the Internet into the internal Flash ROM (PC only), and use all of the Yamaha Education Suite features to help you learn to play them. Yamaha makes it easy to get connected with the new PC button. Now, instead of wading through function menus and fighting through a maze of selections, one button is your expressway to music on the web and your computer. In addition, once connected, you can play your songs into the computer (PC and Mac), edit them if necessary, and email them to your friends and family. And, with General MIDI (GM) and XGlite compatibility, song data always plays back with the correct sounds.

Ease of Operation
There are many tools in this keyboard that make it easy to be a power user from the first day you own the keyboard.

Expandable Music Database: Complete keyboard setups by song title. The keyboard selects an appropriate voice for the right hand melody, the correct musical style and the correct tempo. Simply call up a song title and start playing.

One Touch Setting (OTS): Provides you with a recommended voice with effects for each Style. For example, on a jazz style OTS might be piano, for a Latin style it might be acoustic guitar and for a rock style it might be a guitar with overdrive, etc.

Registration Memory: Set the keyboard up just the way you like and take a digital snapshot by memorizing it to one of the Registration buttons. Load and save up to 16 Registrations to User memory. The Registration buttons are conveniently located just above the keyboard.

Performance Assistant Technology: Performance assistant technology is a feature from Yamaha that guarantees that you can't play a wrong melody note or chord. Here's how it works. Select a song, press the Performance Assistant button Chord Mode, and play the keyboard - any notes you like. Every note you play will fit the music. If you move up the keyboard, the pitch goes up. If you move down, the pitch goes down. Play a perfect arpeggio, or play chords in time with the music, or really "go for it" and play a solo. As long as performance assistant is "on", you're "on".

Imagine being able to give a concert to your friends or relatives the very first day that you bring this keyboard home. Well, with the YPG-235 and performance assistant technology, you can. This keyboard is the first in the line to offer Chord/Free Mode in addition to Chord Mode described above. Chord/Free Mode allows those that have learned a melody with their right hand to have the keyboard correct the notes of their left hand. This allows you to concentrate on one hand at a time while learning. Play the correct notes with the right and any notes with the left and you're making beautiful music. In addition to working with any of the internal songs with chords, this feature also works with XF MIDI files.

32-Note Polyphony and 16-Part Multitimbral
In electronic keyboards, the more sounds made at the same time - polyphony - the more memory is needed. Obviously, more is always better, because too little polyphony can cause dropouts in dense passages of music. The YPG-235 has 32 notes of polyphony and will play back 16 different parts or sounds at once (16-part multitimbral); enough for the most demanding needs.

Digital Effects
Yamaha has long been a world leader in digital signal processing technology. In fact, Yamaha professional audio products are found in most professional recording studios around the world. The YPG-235 takes full advantage of this know-how, giving you an extensive range of nine, top-quality reverb effects that simulate playing in everything from a small room to a large spacious concert hall and four chorus effects that add richness to electric pianos and guitars in particular. You'll also find 26 types of Harmony effects for your melody part.

Auto Accompaniment Styles
In addition to the 100 songs mentioned above, the YPG-235 also has auto accompaniment styles that "follow" your playing. Simply select a style of music from the 160 built-in styles (example Rock) and start playing. The YPG-235 will create a backup band (bass, drums, strings, guitar, etc.) and "follow" you through the song. You can play your songs and try different genres of music. And if you can't find the right style for your song, you can go to the Yamaha musicsoft website, preview from the selection, purchase and transfer it to your keyboard (PC only).

Portable Grand: Industry's Best Piano
You're never more than a button push away from realistic piano sound in your portable keyboards. One press of the Portable Grand button resets the entire keyboard to a stereo-sampled piano - perfect for when it's time to practice. Yamaha is known around the world for the quality of our acoustic pianos and this attention to detail is evident as you enjoy the warmth and clarity of the YPG-235 Portable Grand piano. And, of course, the keyboard includes a Sustain Pedal jack on the back for practicing and playing piano pieces.

Note: This keyboard does not ship with batteries or a power supply. We enthusiastically recommend the Yamaha SK-D2 Survival Kit, which contains the appropriate power supply for your keyboard, as well as a footswitch, a set of headphones, a two-year extended warranty, rebate coupons and helpful software. #H65814

The Yamaha YPG 235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano Keyboard is a great deal for the money!! This keyboard has one feature that is called "Graded Soft Touch action", meaning that you can adjust the keyboard if you so desire to simulate the weighted action of a piano. This keyboard also has a great sound, try the Grand Piano setting and you won't believe you are playing a $300 keyboard. It has many, many features that you would not consider in this price range and it has that great Yamaha quality and value.

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

Terrific instrument. I also purchased the Roland KR 105 for over 15 times the amount I paid for this instrument and it performs just as well. Yamaha has a great way of doing things.

Great sound for a great price

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I was looking at keyboards for almost a year, when I came around this one. The grand piano, and church organ sound amazing. Also, not only was it my favorite keyboard I found, but the cheapest. The extra money went to a good amp.

get this...

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I play keyboard in a band that covers stuff like Born of Osiris, Winds of Plague, stuff like that. I walked into guitar center expecting to buy a Korg X50. Then I started playing around with other keyboards and noticed this beauty... personally, I disliked Yamaha due to the fact they are one of those huge companies that make everything from instruments to motorcycles. Compared to keyboards like the Casio WK series or the Microkorg or X50, the keys are very comfortable, having enough resistance to make it feel well-built, but light and fast enough to easily do speed runs. There are 500 different sounds on it, and personally, I would like to delete 400 of them. However, there are a good 100 sounds on there that sound very nice. My personal favorite would have to be the xylophone or the banjo. The chorus and the string voices are very clear and put out a really nice Winds of Plague-ish tone, which surprised me considering their keyboardist uses a 3500 dollar Roland. Enough about the pros, though, now down to the cons. This is very bulky, and if you don't buy the survival kit, you have to run this thing off of eight 9 volt batteries. Also, the screen is rather small, I'm guessing 1x3 inches, and is very hard to read if you're looking from it at an angle, rather than strait down on it. All in all, I would definitely recommend this, and I actually run this through a guitar amp, and it works fine.

great keyboard

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

This keyboard is one of the best out there. Wonderful keyboard for advanced or beginner pianists. Two way speakers work perfectly. This keyboard is great for recording with its many features and tones. It also features a USB port to connect to your computer, and 5-6 track recording. The only thing you need to buy is a survival kit. I bought a stand a few days after I bought the keyboard which is really nice. The kits include power adapters headphones and a sustain pedal, and dvd's.

Lacking disclosure

By Georgetta M Bunte

from Calhoun, Georgia

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I ordered this keyboard as a gift. I carefully read all the information and was impressed. HOWEVER, nowhere in the descriptions was it mentioned that it DID NOT come with an AC power adaptor, which is the main source of power. For this, you must additionally purchase a "Survival Kit" for an additional $35.00+. The majority of electronics/phones/etc have AC adaptors/chargers included and I feel this is a huge misconception on the part of the buyer.

An awesome keyboard for any and all types of music. Great price and great sound. When I was shopping for a new keyboard it blew my mind on the sound quality and the price of this instrument. Totally worth the buy if you want a keyboard that is worth its weight in gold.

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

The keyboard offers a lot of bang for the buck. Please be aware that this keyboard does not come with the wall power supply and the sales staff does not inform the customer of this. The wall adapter costs approximately 30 dollars.

BEST KEYBOARD FOR THE PRICE

By Jesus Fuentes

from El Paso, Tx.

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I have been using this keyboard for around 4 years now (back when it was YPG 225) I play in a Dream Theater cover band and this keyboard is just fine. I was impressed by the quality of the presets. You cannot edit sounds, but you can tweak them a little bit with some reverb, chorus or flanger. It has a dual function to use two sounds at a time, or a split function to use two separate sounds on two different sections of the keyboard at a time. You can save your presets very easily and you can access them with a single button. The piano sounds great, and it has a really natural feel with touch sensitivity. My favorite things about this keyboard are the strings effects. You can get really professional sounding strings, comparable with 2000+ dlls keyboards. After 4 years of heavy use , my keyboard is still 100% functional, the only thing that tends to malfunction is the pitch wheel, but it is easy to repair. If you are a beginner, this is the best keyboard you can get for the price, I fully recommend it.

surprisingly good

By Greg Selander

from Lewisville, TX

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I've have had mine for over a year now, and I gotta say I really love this keyboard. Yamaha has come a long ways with their products, and this is the most authentic piano sounding keyboard they've made. I run it through my computer then through my stereo shelf system and I love the sound it puts out (The honky-tonk piano setting sounds just like my old upright). Even in the drum kits, I was surprised at the authentic sounds. It has the sensitive touch, I turn it off and it feels and acts like a real piano that way. The only thing I could ask is if they would like double up the keys on some things, so you could do a drum roll (the prerecorded one is good, but kinda cheezy)or a cymbal roll with mallets. But otherwise, the accomp rhythms are great, I use the Country ones and they're pretty authentic as well, particularly the Country Swing being closest to the classic Country style. All the woodwind and brass instruments are really beautiful sounding, and so are the strings.Especially in the upper group of sounds, the XGlite Optional. The only other thing I ask would be PLEASE get the individual violins and cellos to sound more real, and the steel guitar also. I WISH they would improve on that. I love the guitar sounds on it. All and all I really love this keyboard, great quality sound at a good price. I have multi-track recording mixer in my computer and so far I have been VERY pleased and impressed at the recordings I get from this keyboard.
