Overview

If you're looking for a reasonably priced piano replacement, the YPG-235 is an excellent choice. It is the music student or professional musicians' answer to "I need more keys!" and a great solution for a keyboard that will grows with their needs of students. It features 76 non-weighted keys that not only look like piano keys but have a Graded Soft Touch (GST) action with different levels of resistance, making it easier for a budding musician to move to an acoustic or digital piano.

Full Keyboard Mode
The YPG-235 delivers on its piano theme with a special mode of fingering called Full Keyboard Mode. This allows you to play the keyboard like a piano; for example a chord with the right hand and bass notes with the left. When using the accompaniment feature, the virtual band will follow these chords. Traditional portable keyboards normally require you to chord on the left side of the keyboard, in the bass section, which is foreign to most piano players. However, the YPG-235 is also capable of this mode, for those who prefer or are used to it.

Yamaha Education Suite: Helps you learn to play
The YPG-235 has 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on included CD-ROM for you to learn to play using the Yamaha Education Suite. The songs are separated into left and right hand parts, providing 7 levels of lessons plus a convenient chord dictionary.

6-Track Sequencer
Imagine capturing your child's first performance or writing and recording your own songs. With the YPG-235, you have the equivalent of a built-in multi-track recorder to record one or multiple instrument parts at a time and assign each part to a different track. Six tracks are provided to accommodate sophisticated melodies, chord accompaniment and rhythm parts.

Computer Connectivity: USB and Flash ROM
Besides the 30 built-in songs and 70 more on the CD, the YPG-235 comes with the ability to connect to a computer via USB, so you can download more songs from the Internet into the internal Flash ROM (PC only), and use all of the Yamaha Education Suite features to help you learn to play them. Yamaha makes it easy to get connected with the new PC button. Now, instead of wading through function menus and fighting through a maze of selections, one button is your expressway to music on the web and your computer. In addition, once connected, you can play your songs into the computer (PC and Mac), edit them if necessary, and email them to your friends and family. And, with General MIDI (GM) and XGlite compatibility, song data always plays back with the correct sounds.

Ease of Operation
There are many tools in this keyboard that make it easy to be a power user from the first day you own the keyboard.

Expandable Music Database: Complete keyboard setups by song title. The keyboard selects an appropriate voice for the right hand melody, the correct musical style and the correct tempo. Simply call up a song title and start playing.

One Touch Setting (OTS): Provides you with a recommended voice with effects for each Style. For example, on a jazz style OTS might be piano, for a Latin style it might be acoustic guitar and for a rock style it might be a guitar with overdrive, etc.

Registration Memory: Set the keyboard up just the way you like and take a digital snapshot by memorizing it to one of the Registration buttons. Load and save up to 16 Registrations to User memory. The Registration buttons are conveniently located just above the keyboard.

Performance Assistant Technology: Performance assistant technology is a feature from Yamaha that guarantees that you can't play a wrong melody note or chord. Here's how it works. Select a song, press the Performance Assistant button Chord Mode, and play the keyboard - any notes you like. Every note you play will fit the music. If you move up the keyboard, the pitch goes up. If you move down, the pitch goes down. Play a perfect arpeggio, or play chords in time with the music, or really "go for it" and play a solo. As long as performance assistant is "on", you're "on".

Imagine being able to give a concert to your friends or relatives the very first day that you bring this keyboard home. Well, with the YPG-235 and performance assistant technology, you can. This keyboard is the first in the line to offer Chord/Free Mode in addition to Chord Mode described above. Chord/Free Mode allows those that have learned a melody with their right hand to have the keyboard correct the notes of their left hand. This allows you to concentrate on one hand at a time while learning. Play the correct notes with the right and any notes with the left and you're making beautiful music. In addition to working with any of the internal songs with chords, this feature also works with XF MIDI files.

32-Note Polyphony and 16-Part Multitimbral
In electronic keyboards, the more sounds made at the same time - polyphony - the more memory is needed. Obviously, more is always better, because too little polyphony can cause dropouts in dense passages of music. The YPG-235 has 32 notes of polyphony and will play back 16 different parts or sounds at once (16-part multitimbral); enough for the most demanding needs.

Digital Effects
Yamaha has long been a world leader in digital signal processing technology. In fact, Yamaha professional audio products are found in most professional recording studios around the world. The YPG-235 takes full advantage of this know-how, giving you an extensive range of nine, top-quality reverb effects that simulate playing in everything from a small room to a large spacious concert hall and four chorus effects that add richness to electric pianos and guitars in particular. You'll also find 26 types of Harmony effects for your melody part.

Auto Accompaniment Styles
In addition to the 100 songs mentioned above, the YPG-235 also has auto accompaniment styles that "follow" your playing. Simply select a style of music from the 160 built-in styles (example Rock) and start playing. The YPG-235 will create a backup band (bass, drums, strings, guitar, etc.) and "follow" you through the song. You can play your songs and try different genres of music. And if you can't find the right style for your song, you can go to the Yamaha musicsoft website, preview from the selection, purchase and transfer it to your keyboard (PC only).

Portable Grand: Industry's Best Piano
You're never more than a button push away from realistic piano sound in your portable keyboards. One press of the Portable Grand button resets the entire keyboard to a stereo-sampled piano - perfect for when it's time to practice. Yamaha is known around the world for the quality of our acoustic pianos and this attention to detail is evident as you enjoy the warmth and clarity of the YPG-235 Portable Grand piano. And, of course, the keyboard includes a Sustain Pedal jack on the back for practicing and playing piano pieces.

Note: This keyboard does not ship with batteries or a power supply. We enthusiastically recommend the Yamaha SK-D2 Survival Kit, which contains the appropriate power supply for your keyboard, as well as a footswitch, a set of headphones, a two-year extended warranty, rebate coupons and helpful software. #H65814

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I picked this up as a gift for my parents. The feel was pretty decent enough for me to feel comfortable enough to mess around on it when I visit. What I liked is that I could connect my laptop up to it via usb & record quick ideas. Parents loved the color of the keyboard. The patches are plentiful & the sound is pretty decent. Overall great beginner keyboard with some better than the average losses.

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

This is a really good keyboard. The sound is great and the variety of voices are wonderful. And the ability to record in different parts is really cool. You can also add 6 more MIDI files of your own choice so you can have it play some of your own songs or songs you chose.
But I have some issues with it too. I would classify myself as an "Experienced Novice" in that I have played around with learning to play but I can only play very simple things. One thing this could really use is more space for more MIDI files. A few of the songs I have in there just because it sounds great on the keyboard. I also own some of the EZ Series keyboards and the EZ-30 has space for 10 files. I also find the YES (Educational Suite) isn't very helpful on this keyboard. The screen is very small and you must know where the notes fall on the keyboard. If pretty much requires for you to already know how to read music so why do you need this function? With the EZ units the keys light up so you can follow along by hitting the keys that are lit. The more upscale version is called "Follow Lights" which has LEDs above each key so you can follow along. IMHO that is where the Educational Suite (YES) is the most useful.
So if you want a keyboard that sounds great and has a wide variety of voices and you can record on this is the perfect keyboard for you. If you learn with software or an online service like Playground Session this keyboard works great too because the MIDI functions are easy to set up. But if you are looking for a good keyboard to learn how to play you would probably want to with a different option.

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I purchased this keyboard about 10 years ago when I was starting in bands. I figured bang for the buck, and wouldn't break the bank if I didn't continue.

I loved it! 76 keys is a great size! Weight is easy to carry around from gig to gig, and the sounds are very decent!

Very easy to navigate around the keyboard, split and layer sounds, and jump from one sound or setting to another between songs.

Piano folks may not like it because the feel is not true to a piano. Probably halfway between piano feel and total fake keyboard feel, but I liked it. I sold this keyboard figuring I wanted more piano and got a Privia 330, but wish I kept this one as well!

The only drawback I had is the 1/4" jack was more suited for headphones than amps as I had some minor issues playing live, but once I got proper cables, all was good.

I loved this keyboard, highly recommend it, and may actually buy another!

Comments about Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano:

I ordered this keyboard as a gift. I carefully read all the information and was impressed. HOWEVER, nowhere in the descriptions was it mentioned that it DID NOT come with an AC power adaptor, which is the main source of power. For this, you must additionally purchase a "Survival Kit" for an additional $35.00+. The majority of electronics/phones/etc have AC adaptors/chargers included and I feel this is a huge misconception on the part of the buyer.

The keyboard offers a lot of bang for the buck. Please be aware that this keyboard does not come with the wall power supply and the sales staff does not inform the customer of this. The wall adapter costs approximately 30 dollars.
