My quest for a low cost (ok, cheap!) bass has led me to this cool Yamaha TRBX174EW. Been looking for bass I can keep out and ready for use when ever I need it and use at gigs which I rather not take my Fodera or Roscoe basses. After reading reviews and looking through all the low cost basses available, choose the TRBX.

Yamaha has always been known for good quality even with their low cost line of instruments. Well got it today and so far happy with my purchase. This model features a mahogany body and a really thin but beautiful Mango Wood veneer top. The headstock also sports a Mango Wood veneer. It features a PJ pickup setup and is a passive bass. The controls are volume/volume/tone. The black knobs are plastic and a bit cheap looking. So ordered some black metal replacement knobs. The bridge is a standard vintage type. I also ordered a higher mass bridge to replace it.

The bolt-on neck is 24 fret and is a one piece maple with a sonokeling (in the rosewood family) fretboard. The fretwork isn't too bad. The edges of a couple of the frets could have been filed down better, but not blaring bad. One thing to note, the headstock is not a tilt back type. There is a string retainer bar on the front to pull the strings down over the nut. I mention this because most basses in this price range that have tilted headstocks, the headstock is glued onto the neck. The TRBX is completely one piece from top to bottom. The nut is just a hair wider then a Jazz bass, and the neck has a nice chunky profile which I like. The back of the neck has a natural finish.

Out of box the setup wasn't too bad and just required a little tweaking. The weight is probably a bit under 9 lbs. The tone is pretty punchy with both pickups up full. Has a great P bass tone when soloing the neck P pickup. It came with round wound strings that did not sound to bad. But after 10 minutes of playing my fingers were dirty the strings! So nixed them and put on a fresh set of D'Addario XL170s.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174EW Mango Wood 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I wanted to step down from an all out bells and whistles battery bass to something practical. I specifically wanted this pickup arrangement. Other basses out there seemed plenty good enough but I was drawn to the fact that this Yamaha has twenty four frets. I was surprised at the nice finish this bass has. I can use it to play any style of music live and look good. The body shape is balanced and this bass feels great sitting down or standing up. I have no doubt you can use this bass on a big stage - don't let others fool you into thinking you need something obscene to play big. This is a bass and a brand name that will hang with you. Just get some medium gauge nickle plated round wound strings. If not it's buzz city with your other not so good string choices. Setup itself should already be awesome.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174EW Mango Wood 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have always wanted to play bass for as long as I can remember. Sounds just fine through my 20 watt Ampeg. Some say it has fret buzz and that may be true or it might be me.I got mine for under $ 200. When I get better I'll get a nicer bass and amp.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174EW Mango Wood 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've been playing bass for over 30 years. I've had all the old standard basses that were and are popular and I had a couple battery basses that were supposed to be everything and more. This bass is a great take on a j and p bass that perhaps outdoes them both. Sounds much more classic - modern and genuine than a battery bass. The finishes offered give the audience something fresh and new to look at. At my age now, this will be my bass for life. Wish I had it 30 years ago. The main thin to say about this bass is how many styles of music it is good for. I play just about everything and I can play it all on just this one bass.

Felt great right off the wall at Guitar Center. Only modification I made was to immediately put flat-wound strings on it. No set-up needed, very minimal fret buzz. Has a great sound.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174EW Mango Wood 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this as to be as big of a pain as possible to my upstairs neighbor. They seem to encourage their kid to jog laps throughout their apartment between 11 pm and midnight every night. So the least I can do is serenade them with some good tunes.

Coming from a guitar (never played bass before), and considering that this is more of a budget impulse buy, I wasn't sure what to expect from this when I sat down with it. But I have to tell you, it felt like coming home. The neck feels great, the body feels balanced, and the sound is much better than I expected for the price tag. I played with 6 different bodies when testing these out. And this was, by far, my favorite.

There was some fret buzz on the E string. Raised the action a tad and all is well. Intonation was dead on out of the box. Seriously, I absolutely love this thing. And the fact that it annoys my neighbors is just icing on the cake. :)
