I had many amps to choose from & many were much cheaper than the THX10X but they were all just that... CHEAP! This amp is built tough & sounds absolutely amazing! The THX10X gives that extra high gain needed for those of us who love to rock hard!! The sound that comes from this little amp is indescribable & one of the BEST I'VE HEARD FROM SUCH A SMALL AMP! But please don't et me wrong, when it comes to crystal clear sound & that extra high gain, THERE'S NOTHING SMALL ABOUT THIS AMP! I have no regrets & nothing to complain about! I love this amp!

THR 10 X ---Great little amp

By Kenneth Phelps

from Indianapoilis, IN

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

The tones that come out of this amp are great, especially for it's size.. Clean, Blues, Metal, Classic Rock you have it all. The effects work good and have a good sound mix. I have not yet messed with the custom settings which you can set on your computer a program in the amp. I have not messed with the recording and looping capabilities via PC. The aux input sounds pretty good too, especially if your device has a built in EQ as the aux channel plays bypass the amp EQ. Surprisingly LOUD for a little 10W amp. The only thing that would make this better is a footswitch and a tube version........++++

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

I've seen these units in the musician's magazine a number of times, but never really gave them a second look. I figured they were just another boutique-looking gizmo. And Yamaha is definitely not something I consider when pondering high-gain. I accidentally stumbled on a few videos online, and I was impressed. How is this so, and why am I not aware of this?

So I bought online without even giving it a test drive, which I tend not to do after being let down with other products. I am extremely happy with this product. Big sounds, and can certainly fool the most discerning ear. Tones are there, and the feel is tube-like. My other amps are tube, and I am dabbling with the notion of selling them for a small PA system, and just stereo mic this bad-boy. I can't believe I just said that.

I won't go into everything I like, but I would like to offer up two possible suggestions for Yamaha to take into consideration.

Channel Switching: since there are five quick access memory slots on the unit, why not create a channel switching jack near those. A footswitch doesn't really cost that much, and the user could purchase his/her own. But enable it to switch between memory slots 1 and 2.

External Stereo Jacks: I curiously plugged my new Marshall Stanmore (Bluetooth/line-in) speaker into the headphone jack, and I was amazed to hear a lot more bottom-end, which the unit lacks due to the tiny speakers. It would be nice to have external stereo jacks that would plug into a stereo power amp. When you plug anything into the headphone jack, it automatically disables the internal speaker. I would like to have the option of running internal, external, or both.

I purchased this amp to take to Guitar Town at Coppper Mountain because of its small size features and tone quality it has and still continues to impress me with its tone and volume levels it can produce, it will make playing the open mics there super easy and a true joy! Others that i play guitar with are very amazed by its quality!

i wish the phone app was available for all operating systems. the cuebase is absolutely deplorable. would have preferred something more user friendly and designed with the product and its end users in mind. all that aside the unit is awesome. sounds great, looks cool, & functions beautifully. the most amazing part is that you can get several hours of play out of a set of cheap battery.

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

I use this at home where high, booming volumes aren't too welcome. So, this is the perfect solution. It provides all the gain/high gain I normally use and has great response/feel at all volume levels. I a/b switch this with a THR5X in a clean setting to fulfill both sound options without having to worry about channel switching. I really could have used this(these)amp(s) long ago. I don't have any complaints about the THR amps, but do kind of wish slightly bigger speakers could have been used...otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing.

      Crystal clear distortion

      By Haifisch

      from UA

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

This thing is so amazing that I can't believe it actually exists. For years I was dreaming of Mesa/Boogie Rectifier sound (similar to Rammstein) within my apartment in a house full of neighbors. Over the years I have tried many distortion/overdrive plugins, major hardware/software solutions for PC and Mac. The results were unconvincing. I was desperately thinking about buying Rectifier which, of course, is way too powerful for apartment (even 25 Watts). If you ever played on tube amps you know, that their sound is crystal clear on high gain. Also tube amps are precisely reproducing nuances like angle of attack and strength of palm muting. Yamaha THR10X is acting the same way as tube amp - the distortion is crystal clear and play nuances are precisely audible. The advertising statement on the box "big amps response" is truth. Build quality is on par with its incredible sound. The unit and the AC adapter work in complete silence. I was hesitating between THR5, THR10, and THR10X models. I visited the store several times to play on each of them. It turned out that THR5 is too basic: THR5 does not have FLAT response which is very convenient for getting really undistorted sound with only chorus/delay effects; the TONE regulator of THR5 is restricting compared to the natural BASS/MIDDLE/TREBLE control of THR10(X). For metal music style the sound of THR10X is notably deeper and more authentic to high gain tube amps compared to THR10. The modes POWER I and SOUTHERN HI of THR10X give more space and clarity compared to modes BRIT HI and MODERN of THR10. Besides of metal I play classic music on Yamaha Silent Guitar SLG100N. The best thing about Silent Guitar is that it gives very uncolored sound. And it turned out that the best mode for Silent Guitar is FLAT, because CLEAN mode gives audible "gain" distortion on any settings. Thanks to the built-in tuner it is very easy to change between Standard/Dropped tunings. All in all, if you want to play metal in your apartment then buy this amp.

The Yamaha team has really done a great job with this amp. It's perfect fit for purpose. I have 3 other amps, 1 tube and two solid state. I can easily dial in the tone I want without much trouble and not annoy the neighbours. Since I have purchased its taken its place as the primary practice amp. What is missing as others have noted, and I have with other amps, is the foot switch, something wireless would be a great addition. I might also change or provide a 1/8 the headphone jack. I also like the portability of this unit.

I use it to jam at home since I live in a apartment and can't have big amps, having to stop playing to press a button to change channels is lame. I don't understand how it could have been missed.

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

After two years of reading amp reviews for sound, warmth, and ability to handle the C7, and lower strings than this on my 36 string electric solid body Harp for bedside therapy I experimented with the Yamaha. The store had me take the Fishman Loudbox, but it was too full of pop, crackles for a small hospital room for Harp therapy. Yamaha had the warmth of the Loudbox and after trying the THR 10C I wanted the full sound of the loudbox, and I found it in the THR 10X! It gave depth to those low end deep bass Harp strings so needed in therapy for relaxation. The easy of battery, and the lightweight small box yet so strong metal is perfect for hospice work. Nice there is a cord in case batteries run out, but so far really good lengthen. Finding out too that with a Microphone next to my AER amp I can get a great big sound that is beautiful for a bigger space should I want to perform instead of bedside therapy. Make sure to invest in a really good patch cord for hiss free beauty it is worth it with this amps abilities.

I prefer this over the regular THR10.

              By Xiao

              from Portland, OR

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

I've seen too many videos and good reviews about the THR10. They sound good in almost every video I've seen. I bought the regular THR10 last week, and it sounded very well. The THR10 has a bit of everything from clean (THR10c) to hi gain (THR10x). The regular THR10 sounded good enough for me, but I could not control myself to turn up the gain. Then I realized I shall really get the THR10x because I think the regular 10 doesn't have enough gain. Therefore, I return the 10 and ordered the 10x. I just picked it up this afternoon and I am glad I chose the 10x. It seems like an amp for heavy metal according to the advertising and description from Yamaha, but the fact is, the 10x is super versatile. The 10x has enough gain and distortion, but is also good for blues and other style. Roll down the volume or switch to clean channel, you will have a nice clean sound. This amp seems like a small toy, but trust me it sounds HUGE and EXCELLENT. You won't regret buying it. One thing I don't like about it is it doesn't come with the CD for Cubase AI anymore. Now it has a code in the manual and you can use the code to download the Cubase.

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

Great little bedroom amp for those times when you don't want to rattle the windows and wake the neighbors. For working through old Van Halen, ACDC, etc.. this amp gets close enough to make it enjoyable. So far I haven't been able to dial in any usable blues tones, and the cleans are shallow and lacking depth to my ears. I only gave it 4 stars because it lacks a foot pedal input to change presets, and it is pretty much one dimensional. If they found a way to combine the circuits on this and the THR10C amp, it would be awesome. I would even be willing to pay a few dollars more for that option. But for the price, I might just pick up one of those and find a way to A/B them using a switch. Still highly recommended for its intended use.

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

For many years, I have searched for an EVH tone without having to sell off my house to afford. I have owned many, many amps and tried unsuccessfully to find my desired tone! This thing has it straight from the box! I was hesitant to try yet another non-tube, modeling type amp, but the THR10X kept coming to mind. Finally, I made the investment (price is very very reasonable for what you get!!). I am amazed at the tone I get and can achieve without loud volume. My family appreciates it too. I have used power soaks in the past to "crank" an amp without blowing my ears. The THR10X allows me to get the sound, without attenuation. In fact, I sold my power soak for nearly the price I paid for this Yamaha amp. I love it for general jamming, and home recording. No need for Noise Suppressors, Compressors, etc. I mainly plug directly from guitar to amp and have all I need. Occasionally, I add a tube screamer just to give a little more edge or boost, but that is barely necessary. I think I finally found exactly what I was looking for and could not be happier! On top of sounding great, it is a well-built amp and very durable. If I had to offer one suggestion (and I had to think about this for awhile because it is virtually flawless), I would prefer in the text surrounding the knobs was white instead of tan. It would make it a bit easier for reading the controls for quick adjustments. Not a deal breaker, because this amp is so easy to control, I barely look at the knobs now that I am familiar with it. Very good product, great price, and so much fun! Customer for life!

One last note: The software and app available is very useful too! The tempo and pitch adjusters are very accurate and helpful for dissecting complicated guitar riffs!

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

I stumbled accross the THR10R recently at a store and did some research and found out about the THR10X. I have been playing for 30 years and have owned Rivera, Mesa, Soldano, Marshalls, etc.. you name it, I have probably had it.

I tried digital modeling amps before and detested them.

This little sucker sounds and FEELS good playing.
                Great tones that are useable.

Interfacing with the computer for doing home recording is a massive bonus to me..

I can use it as the amp source for my tones, for playback, etc..

It's such a cool little tool that was cleverly thought out.

                I highly recommend it.

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

I bought this amp for several reasons. First of all, I needed a new practice amp. The one I have been using since 1985 is great but it needs a good OD pedal to push it into Metal territory and it doesn't have a headphone jack. Recording with it was also a bit of a hassle, volume-wise. I wanted something I could just plug into and get a great tone while also being able to play late at night. The ability to record straight to the computer was a big plus as well.

Enter the Yamaha THR series of amps. I did a lot of research online before purchasing, all of the demos are very true to the actual amp. The Yamaha demo with Satchel from Steel Panther pretty much sealed it for me (that guy is hilarious and man, can he play!)

All of the tones are very authentic, Yamaha's VCM technology is really amazing! I like the way the models are based on actual amp components rather than just the basic sound of the amp, they really do respond like the amps they are emulating. The sounds are huge for such a small amp, the stereo separation is fantastic. The effects sound great and I hope in the future they will add the option to place the effect pre or post amp (I like my phaser before the amp but it still sounds great as is). The addition of other effects like OD pedals, etc. would be awesome too, not a complaint, just a suggestion, I hope they can make it happen with future software versions/upgrades.

The real fun begins when you plug it into your computer and start playing with the THR editor, all kinds of tweaking can be done to the effects and the ability to swap speaker cabs and amps really adds to the tonal flexibility. I'm pretty much addicted to Brown I and the THR presets, makes playing early Van Halen a lot of fun. I have been able to find useful tones with all the models, Yamaha did a really great job with this series of amps.

Before buying this amp I wasn't a huge fan of digital modeling but this amp has really changed my mind, at least when it comes to Yamaha's version of it. In fact, I liked this amp so much that I bought a THR10 for the more classic tones and I love that amp just as much as the THR10X, both are great and I don't think you could go wrong with either amp. But if your main preference/interest is in "Tha Brootalz" then the THR10X will serve you well.

Yamaha makes great equipment, I still have my Natural Sound component stereo system from the late 80s and it sounds amazing, I expect I will be able to say the same of my THR amps years from now as well.

Comments about Yamaha THR10X High-Gain Modeling Combo Amp:

IMHO, this is the best amp for metal you can buy for under $500. First, don't let the fact that it is a Yamaha dissuade you from buying this. I have to admit I was skeptical, I mean come on Yamaha isn't exactly Boogie, VHT, Bogner, Marshall, Engl, Peavey, Randall, or Diezel. Surprisingly, the THR10X delivers big-time tone with massive gain in a small package. So, what is it? What does it sound like? The THR10X is a 10W portable solid state modeling amp with stereo speakers. It has amp models that are basically a Randall RG100H, Peavey 5150 II, Peavey 5150, Engl Powerball II, and Engl Powerball. None of these are an exact clone, but the Brown, 5150 and Brown II, 5150 II in particular capture the soul of the original. The Randall RG100H or SouthernHi as they call it on the Yamaha THR10X has a built-in scooped midrange EQ which is not exactly my favorite, more of a frown EQ fan myself. And I also can't really speak to that one's authenticity since I don't own the Randall. But, I've A/B-ed the Powerball and Powerball II with my Engl and the tone is very much in the ballpark but it doesn't really capture the brightness or high gain liquidity of the actual Powerball II. I find myself using the Brown as Yamaha calls it's 5150 and Brown II or 5150 II for almost everything. These are very close to the originals but they don't have the hum that you get on the 5150 II at really high gain settings, and you can get high gain tone at a much more reasonable volume on the Yamaha. There is also a clean channel. The effects are limited and a little difficult to apply without using the USB connection and THR Editor software. But the THR editor software is fairly well done and pretty powerful. I have a home studio and I bought this amp for practice when I am away from home. Even when I am at home in the studio I find myself using the Yamaha to practice over other much more expensive gear. It just sounds great so you can concentrate on playing not tweaking.
