Overview

The Yamaha S90 XS Music Synthesizer is an exceptional keyboard for performing and creating. It's a realistic, naturally expressive synth with a true piano sound. Its highlights include convenient, realtime controls for adjusting the sound as you play, the ability to record audio to USB memory, extensive computer music features, ease of use, and compact size and portability. The Yamaha S90 XS is designed specifically for players who want high-quality piano sounds and expressions; casual players and hobby musicians will appreciate the synthesizer's exquisite sounds, advanced features, and superb playability just as much as professional artists.

Sounds that satisfy
The S Series features all the voices, performances, arpeggios, and virtual circuit modeling effects found on Yamaha's flagship Motif XS Music Production Synthesizer. The S90 XS adds a huge 142 megabytes dedicated exclusively to high-quality piano waveforms, for a total of 456 megabytes of instrument samples. Foremost among these piano sounds are the samples taken from Yamaha's world-renowned S6 concert grand piano. This synthesizer fully captures the richly textured sound of the wonderfully expressive S6, and provides a warm, concert grand piano sound.

In the past, conventional keyboards had sounds designed primarily for the listener. The S90 XS, however, was designed to satisfy the player. Yamaha reasoned that when a performer hears and experiences the best possible sound, their performance would be the best possible too. The result is the S90 XS, a genuine musician's instrument that truly inspires the live performer as well as the music creator and arranger.

Streamline your performance
The S90 XS electronic keyboard lets you quickly and conveniently create your own custom performances with the amazingly fast and easy Performance Creator feature. Select a voice, then quickly program layers and splits-even assign a drum voice complete with arpeggios to create your perfect performance. Let's say that you're playing a piano voice and you want to layer a string sound on top of it. Simply press the layer button, then select the desired voice category and voice, and store your new performance with the press of a button.

The panel controls of the Yamaha S90 XS have been designed and positioned for optimum, intuitive operation, especially for live performances. For example, with the top-panel controls you can quickly select a part, turn it on and off, set arpeggios and turn them on and off, and switch on arpeggio hold, in addition to instantly tweaking important synthesizer parameters using the knobs and sliders.

Ideal for live performers
The S90 XS keyboard synth has a host of other features that live performers will appreciate, such as the combo input jack that accepts mic input. Just plug in a microphone, adjust the input gain knob (while checking the convenient peak lamp),
and you're set. You can also use the control knobs to finely adjust the volume and directly apply reverb or chorus to the sound.

Recording direct to USB/internal memory
If you've got a USB memory device or thumb drive, you can plug it into the S90 XS and record your performance as audio data. This remarkable feature lets you instantly capture what you play on the keyboard (including arpeggio playback) to your USB device. If you've connected a microphone or guitar, you can record your singing or playing as well. You can also record audio directly to the internal flash memory (192 megabytes) built into the instrument without the need of a memory device. Keep in mind that anything you've recorded to the memory device (even audio files created on your computer) can be played back on the Yamaha S90 XS, which means you can create your own custom audio backing tracks and perform along with them. For example, you can create a basic song track beforehand, then sing and solo over it during your performance or add guitar parts and vocal harmonies to be played back during your live performance. There's also a useful song chain function that lets you string together separate recordings and create a convenient backing track "set list" for your gigs.

88-key balanced keyboard
The S90 XS has balanced hammer-effect on its 88 keys for those players who need a full-range, full-scale keyboard. It's exceptionally portable and absolutely perfect for live performers and gigging musicians.

Software integration
The Yamaha S90 XS is also a perfect companion for your computer music production system, serving both as a master keyboard and a full-function, multitimbral tone generator. With the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) remote function and its 50 different control templates, you get amazingly easy, intuitive control over your main DAW software and Virtual Studio Technology (VST) instruments directly from the panel controls. Moreover, the Voice Editor and Remote Editor software gives you convenient, comprehensive computer control over all the sounds, settings, and functions of the S90 XS keyboard synth.

I've played about every brand of digital piano out there because I play as a church musician all over Northeast Ohio. Of the many pianos I've played this thing feels the most like a real piano...and I mean a real good piano, like a steinway or Yamaha. The piano sounds are pretty good...still not the real thing, but the closest I've ever heard from something that has to be plugged in. The microphone and vocoder functions are awesome and handy. There are so many voices that you'll need hours to try them all out: not to mention the fact that you can change the parameters of all of them in real time as well as add arrpegiations and tap tempos for them. People say the screen in small and it is, but everything is on the board so you don't need to deal with menus upon menus on a screen to make the changes you're looking for. And weighing in under 50lbs for 88 weighted keys is awesome...I can lift this thing without asking for help. If you're looking for a great digital piano with the flexibility of a synth try this one out!

I am piano poor, owning many of the very best keyboards ever made. The best all around are my Yamaha PF1000 and my Clavinova, but neither are practicle for hauling around to gigs. My PSR-2000 & 3000 are well suited for the job, but not weighted keys. I was hoping the new S90xs was the answer, not so. Although the action, samples, and feel are top notch, there are limitations excluding this as a real life performing keyboard. Not intuitive at all, just like the Motif, you have to search for anything and everything. Tiny screen, usless search wheel, crummy ARPS, Just a nice piano, but I own one already CP300 I wonder when Yamaha will build one using real performer's needs in mind, not their number-crunching designers input version. If I can't find something of serious value, that I may not have run across yet this S90xs will join the others in the storage room. The quality and sound of Yamaha can't be beat, we now need to add practicle function for the job it was designed for. At $2500 to $3500 a copy, this search gets rediculous. We have no Guitar Center in Montana, so try it before you buy it.

      Great Multipurpose Keyboard

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

I needed a stage piano for acoustic and electric piano sounds but also had been carrying an MOX 6 for synth sounds. This has the best of both worlds with great piano samples for performance. The keybbed is very, very good but not like a pure stage piano. It is light enough to carry around without help Highly recommend this keyboard for the professional keyboard player.

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

Amazing keyboard! Great piano sounds, key action. Looks super cool too! Everything is easy accessible via the topside buttons. Can setup new performances, splits, layers quickly. A great feature is the USB device slot. For rehearsals with me and singer, we plug her mic into the mic jack, insert memory stick and quickly and easily record rehearsals. Record and playback are a snap. The only real suggestion I have is for Yahama to create footswitch to change arps instead of lifting left hand off the keyboard. However, its still relatively easy to make in performance changes. Yamaha customer service is great, as I've had a few questions and they've been very helpful. You can control two parts with different expression pedals. More voices than I know what to do with and all sound great. Strings, organs, keys, guitars, bass all sound real. And of course, the best piano sounds, especially the S6. There are multiple S6 samples, along with multiple grands & upright, tacky, house piano, etc.

      Pleased

      By Joe Nallie

      from LUMBERTON TX

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

I narrowed my search for a new rig down to the Korg Kronos and the Yamaha S90XS. The Motif XF is just to much money for me. Guitar Center gave me 30 days to return it if not satisfied and I have to say I was tempted at first. But the 30 days has just passed I am glad I didn't return it. At first I was confused and a little overwhelmed by the control interface used on the S90xs. But after reading the very short owners manual and with a Motif community online I was able to do everything I expected. It is a pleasure to play live on stage. My first problem was Rotary Speaker settings. It is not addressed in the manual. But after research I found out how to adjust the Leslie Effect's wind up time and speed of the horn and rotor. Whew, that was major due to the fact that the default setting was too slow to "wind up" in my opinion. The next issue is the matter of quickly accessing my favorite sound patches. It's reasonably easy to layer two sounds but I wanted four of my favorite sounds at my fingertips. So, with the help of the online forum and the Yamaha Reference Manual (online only), I was able to save combinations of four sounds and assign them to the Master Mode. This way, I can have for example, Piano or Organ or Rhodes or Accordian instantly available individually or I can blend them anyway I like with the four Slider Volume controls the S90XS is equipped with. The quality of the sounds are fantastic. The buttons and slider controls are solid. The unit itself looks and feels like a quality product. I am very pleased with the keyboard action too. I own a nice Yamaha acoustic piano and previously owned a Korg SG Pro X, which is known for its great action and feel. I like the bounce of these keys and the weight just feels good.

Love it, buy it, no complaints so far

      By Michael Peterson

      from Rigby, ID

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

This product delivered exactly what it said. The only thing I was surprised with was that the reference manual & voice/drum listings were on pdf files on a cd rom, however, after seeing the size of these manuals it makes perfect sense. It make it nice to be able to do a search on the computer for a specific subject instead of fingering through manually. This item does not have speakers so make sure you get some powered speakers too.
This keyboard has so many features, it blows my mind. I have been playing with it continuously for about a month & I keep finding new stuff.
I have only owned this for a month, but I have found no problems so far. I have used every input/output on the keyboard & have no complaints so far.

      Yamaha S90XS

      By Neil Caplin

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

The S90XS keyboard plays well in performances. The piano tones are quite good with excellent, natural keyboard action and feel. This keyboard is my primary set of keys that I play on stage using several of the sounds to accompany the band. The keyboard offers good piano, organ, and strings. The horns are kind of weak though. I'd like to hear a better full brass sound when the band plays without our brass section leaving me to fill in their parts.

It is easy to change sounds on the fly making it nice during a song. Nothing worse then grooving along and you have to think about a part coming up that requires an instant change and then back again. I don't do a lot of programing even though the S90XS has those functions. I use it as a straight keyboard with another keyboard stacked on top for performances. I have set to midi out for some recording in my studio though and it was very easy to use. The percussion tracks worked out well along with some of the other sounds to layer in.

I do wish they'd find a way to weight the keys without all the weight of the keyboard. It is so heavy. The Yamaha S90XS is a good all around keyboard and would recommend it as an excellent choice for studio to concert use.

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

It does everything I need it to do and more. It's user friendly but Very complicated at the same time. Until you get accustomed to the menus it can be very confusing. You really have to spend some quality time with the manual. I've been using it a month now and have not even got the basics mastered. It has great action and response. The piano voices are amazing.

      It Really Is the Best

      By cloud9surfer

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

I've recorded 3 CD's with my S90 with plans to do more, and I have no intention of trading this in for another keyboard. All things considered, you everything at your fingertips to record an entire album -- drum machine, bass, synth, keyboard, etc. -- using this instrument. For piano enthusiasts, the real piano feel is uncanny. No other brand apart from Yamaha has been able to mimic the hammer action on an acoustic piano so closely. Of course, I still prefer the weighty action of a grand to the S90, but the feel considering this is a keyboard is still pretty amazing.Whether live or in studio, the S90 has everything you need. I encourage anyone who purchases one of these instruments to do plenty of experimenting. As familiar as you'll become with this thing, it will still be surprising you a year later. Let's give the S90 the respect it's due: it's not a synth, a controller, or a piece of electronics. This is a genuine musical instrument!

      Awesome Keyboard

      By waycoolpianodude

Comments about Yamaha S90XS 88-Key Balanced Weighted Hammer Action Synthesizer:

What an awesome keyboard...I waited MONTHS for this when it first came out. The anticipation and the expectations couldn't have been higher. My expectations were SO high that I feared I'd be let down once it finally arrived. But amazingly, I was not.I play in a working band and use this keyboard as the centerpiece of my rig, which includes two other keyboards (Rolands) and two other rack synths(one's a Triton). I've used all brands of weighted keyboards over the years, and have FINALLY got the perfect one. Great piano sound and feel. Best I've ever had. I've had great digital pianos too. But to use them to trigger patches which require a mod wheel or a pitch bend didn't work so well, of course. It is a GREAT synth, too. Holy cow...having played keyboards for about thirty-five years, this is EASILY the most amazing kybd I've ever played. I've had the best synths...the best pianos...but never thought I'd ever play on one kybd that I enjoyed more than all of them.As keyboardists, we all have our preferences...our favorites. But no matter who you are, or what you like...you will at the very least seriously respect this keyboard if you ever get to use one. Just awesome.
