Proof that basses don't have to be expensive to be good.

By Mark Seigler

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

You can spend a lot of money on guitars. I know, I have over 30. I have found through out my career that you generally get what you pay for. That certainly wasn't the case with this particular bass. When I switch from Guitar to bass for different gigs I normally use a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz. This Yamaha was purchased as a back up. While the RBX doesn't have the spank of a Fender Jazz bass, It's not far away, and I can get some pretty descent slap AND smooth jazz out of it. Simply put, I can get a much wider range (with proper EQ) out of this bass than the price tag and passive pick ups would have you believe. The playability is right up there with any $500 - $700 bass. I can't speak for the regular RBX, but the body on my EW is Mahogany. So it has a nice resonant tone and enough weight not to neck dive. It's put together very well and with the exception of the tuners, pretty solid. Typical Yamaha good attention to detail. The fret edges are smooth and the action is easy to set low and fast. Nice satin finish on the back of the neck. The bridge, while not the best, is adequately stable for this bass. It looks and feels quite a bit more expensive than it is. I have the natural color. The Mango has a lot of visual character. After installing a set of Rotos and lowering the factory set action, I have nothing to complain about, and a lot of cash left over in my pocket..

Not a Keeper

By Michael Pearce

from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

I liked the way it felt, and I mostly liked the way it looked. However, I was displeased with the electronics and a few details about its appearance. It wasn't long before I traded it in because of these issues. It buzzed, and it sure seemed like a grounding issue. This was not a hum that could be prevented with humbuckers. If I was touching any metal part of the strings or bridge, the buzzing stopped, but if I let go, it would quickly build up. The only way to make the sound go away was to turn the tone all the way to the low end, which didn't sound all that great. It did this on two different amps and with different cables. I took it back and exchanged it, and the second one did the same thing. On the headstock, there is a little bar across the springs, suspended about a half inch above the headstock. It is held down with wood screws, but the threads of the screws are exposed in the considerable gap between the bar and the headstock. Not classy.

My first bass guitar

By William Heiberger

from Boston, Massachusetts

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

After thinking about playing an instrument, i decided on bass guitar and convinced my parents to buy it for me for christmas. I chose this bass because it fit my price margin and is made by a quality company, Yamaha. I bought this at the store and I highly recommend testing out your guitars and amps before you buy them online. Anyways, its been about 5 to 6 months and I am very satisfied with my purchase. There has been no problems with the bass and it will make for a great beginner bass for anyone willing to try the bass. I bought mine at the natural color but it looks a lot more like the root beer because they are all different. Pros and Cons Pros -Not expensive -Larger amount of frets (24) than a normal bass (20-22) -Strings seem okay but you can change them if you'd like to -No sharp fret edges -The knobs are easy to use and the tuning is easy to adjust despite the tuners being covered on the backs -And it looks nice -The color doesn't show fingerprints, but the (tobacco one does) Cons -When I first got the bass, the A string rattled against the bridge, I just took the string off and put it back on, and there have been no more problems

Best bass for the price!

By Will Scroggins

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

I have been wanting a good passive bass for a while now and after shopping through many pawn shops with no luck I came to Guitar Center and there it was. It was right in my price range and even better than I expected a bass in that price range to be. I bought this bass the very next day and I am extremely happy with it, being a beginner bass there was a little bit of setup to be done as far pushing down the pickups (the were super high for some reason) and messing with intonation and what not, but after all of that it plays great. I intend to overhaul the electronics and hardware as time goes on but there's really little need to do so because the pickups sound great and the bridge is very sturdy. If you are a beginner this is a FANTASTIC bass and if you have been playing for several years and want a good bass in this price range I would totally suggest picking this bad boy up. You won't be disappointed!

Great bass for the money

By John Tabbert

from La Crosse, WI

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

I was looking for a cheap 4 string to mess around with. My other bass is a 5 string. I tried quite a few basses off the rack and kept going back to this guitar. I have to be honest it was not the best sounding bass of the bunch I was sampling and the setup was not good at all, but I wasn't going to hold the setup against it. After getting it home I did a complete setup on it and it played great. The only issue I had was a fret buzz on the G string around the 12 fret. I figured it was a high fret and was going to worry about it after I put some new strings on it. I just put some D'Addario half rounds on and re-set up the bass. Night and day difference in tone. This thing sounds amazing now. It also turned out to be the cheap strings causing the buzz on the G string. New strings and no buzz. I adjusted the truss to .012 at the mid fret and a string height of 3/32nds and it plays like butter. If you are in the market for a low priced quality bass this is a great choice. Won't find another alder/mango bodied bass at this price that plays this great! Just keep in mind when test driving one that it will need a setup and only get better.

Yamaha RBX170EW Bass---You Get More Than Paid For

By Sarah Parker

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

Hello, fellow musicians! I normally never write reviews for anything, so this is a first. However, I'll try to keep it short! I normally am a guitar person & have played acoustic since my sophomore year of high school and have fiddled with electric since my senior year. I have been getting into different bands recently, and have been inspired by the bassist from Sick Puppies---Emma Anzai. As a fellow female aspiring musician, she is the epitome of an amazing musician. Along with following SP's music, I have been researching the mechanics, history and more of the bass guitar. I am a first-time bass buyer and came into Guitar Center a couple weeks ago, the day after GC's Columbus Day Sale. I had randomly been browsing through the bass selection. There were a couple of brands I had never heard of within my price range ($200-300). Then there was Yamaha. There was the rich, dark tobacco sunburst Yamaha RBX170EW (exotic wood). Something about this bass stood out to me & I couldn't get it out of my mind for the next week and a half as I was waiting to get paid. I was on the fence about investing in bass, simply because I was afraid I'd lose interest. I came back a second time to my local GC and finally was able to plug in. The RBX170EW, yes, has a bolt-on neck (as would any beginner instrument), but the neck was comfortable & fast. The bass was fairly light-weight compared to the Epiphone Thunderbird (which looks pretty cool but was a tank!). For being straight out of the factory without a set-up job, the action was fairly low! I was impressed. Other than a couple beginner bass lines & scales, I didn't play much but it felt right. It feels & looks far superior for a beginner bass than most. I've had it for about two weeks, so it may be too soon to say. But PEOPLE---don't hesitate! This is a great bass already & it will soon play like a dream once it's set up. P.S.- the guitar originally was $199.99 listed (with a $300 ish MSRP from Yamaha's site). However, my salesman scanned this bad boy & somehow it was on sale, so I got an additional $40 off. Seemed like fate :)
