Extended recording and playback time
Advanced LSI technology that achieves top-class sonic quality as well as low power consumption means you get unprecedented extended recording and playback performance in a compact package that weights only 92 grams, including battery. Using the most accurate linear PCM recording mode you can record continuously for up 22 hours on a single battery charge. If stereo MP3 recording suits your needs you can record for up to 50 hours.* The corresponding continuous playback times are 22 hours, and 54 hours, respectively. The POCKETRAK CX cones with an environment-friendly rechargeable Eneloop battery that is charged automatically whenever the unit is connected to your computer via the supplied USB cable.
High capacity micro SD memory cards
The POCKETRAK CX stores audio data on a convenient microSD memory card that contributes both to high storage capacity and the unit's compact, lightweight form. A 2GB microSD card is supplied, and with it you can record up to 3 hours of top-quality audio in 44.1kHz linear PCM format, or up to 35 hours of stereo MP3 audio at 128 kbps. The POCKETRAK CX complies with the standard microSD cards specifications, so you can use compatible cards with higher capacity for extra audio capacity if needed.
Top-quality x-y stereo microphone
The built-in X-Y stereo microphone assembly include 2 directional microphones mounted at a 90 angle to each other. While providing extremely wide coverage this system delivers astonishingly natural stereo imaging with smooth, uniform response from full left to full right, without the level variations and phase anomalies that plague common stereo microphones. The microphones themselves are constructed of parts and materials that were carefully selected to deliver optimal recording precision and clarity without compromise. To further maximize the microphone assembly's performance it is mounted outside the POCKETRACK CX casing in a solid shock-resistant die-cast aluminum frame.
The POCKETRAK CX is capable of recording in uncompressed linear PCM (WAV) format as well as compressed MP3 format. 2 linear PCM modes are provided, corresponding to audio CD and DVD quality sound. MP3 recorded is the best choice for extended recording times, but at the best quality setting (44.1kHz, 320 kbps) delivers outstanding sound quality with full frequency response up to 20,000Hz.

I also purchased this during the Memorial Day sale and so far it just continues to amaze me. I have used it for band practice, acoustic jam by a campfire, gigs in clubs and most recently at a Phish show. Every time I got a recording that exceeded my expecatations - especially at the ridiculoulsy low price I bought it for. I was especially surprised with the Phish recording. I assumed I would need to use external mics in a large venue, but by simply holding the device with a bottle of water and aiming it towards a speaker it came out excellent. The only word of caution I can offer is to use the included wind screen in ANY setting (room with fan etc.) where it is apt to be exposed to moving air. Other than that, it is an ideal recorder. I now wish I had bought two at the price they were selling them for!
Bought this during the GC sale. Really like the recorder; no hassle setup and good sounding results at practice. Just used it to record an outdoor gig, great results. The mic stand adapter is useless. I got an Alesis ProTrack Mounting Adaptor from GC online that works great with it.
I love it I'm in a band and I needed somthing to record our pratices. So i could go over our music at home. the pocketrak is perfect. I love it.
I bought this to record myself practicing. It is very easy to use. Just turn it on and start playing, it records forever. Edit out what you don't want later. The record sound quality is very good. Play it back on your computer, I did not get very good sound out of the built in speaker or headphones. Very nice product and I am pleased with my purchase.
Small unit with plenty of punch. I used this unit as a b/u to my "sound on film" HD camers and also to record background sound (room sounds) to add in later or lay in in reverse shots. Great quality, easy to use. I also record music to try for the soundtrack before final music is completed.
These recorders were on sale on Memorial Day weekend. I was a bit skeptical I admit for that price. Once I got the recorder it seemed to small and light to be effective, but I was wrong. 2 nights later I recorded a jam sessions with some friends. We used Drums, Electric Guitars, and Bass and it really did an excellent job of picking up and differentiating each instrumenet. Any of the short comings were due to the mix in the room as one amp and 1 mic channel were turned down lower which I later fixed after sampling the quality. I do not know how I would feel if I had paid full price but I was extremely suprised at the quality of this product. I havent taken it to a big concert so I dont know how that would work but I dont expect it would be the ideal product for that. I do plan to try it though. It has two mics built into it so if someone wants to get on here and complain about the fact that the line in external mic feature isnt great (which I havent tried)then you shouldnt really be buying a product on board mics in the first place. I would certainly recommend this for any songwriter or band that wants to learn from mistakes in practice. I also feel confident it would work well for field recording in a club setting. If you are just wanting a voice recorder for meetings this is way better than what you need for that. It would be a sin to use this for work meetings but it would work I'm sure. I would caution 1 thing. The mic stand adaptor wouldnt fit any mic stand I have ever seen but this thing was just sitting on the table and got good results.
I have owned this product for about 2 days - until I decided to return it. One could say that this is a goood product due to its size and capabilities. For the size alone, maybe this product is for you. However, I bought this product with the understanding that this can record anything I want through a Mic and Line-In jack. I later found out the ugly truth about this product - You CANNOT record anything in uncompressed format (PCM 44.1 or 48) when you switch this device to record in Line-In mode. It will ONLY record in Mp3-192 kbps with no option to switch out of it. Initially it sounded strange to me, so I called Yamaha to confirm if this was a defect - and I was told this wasn't. If you go to the Yamaha website, you are not told about this at all in the specs. I wonder why. As a result to Yamaha's blunder, I put my money into the Roland Edirol R-09HR. I have yet to get it - but I have heard a lot of good things about the Edirol. Shame on Yamaha, they could have made this product worthwhile.
I auditioned this unit in comparison to the $100 less expensive Yamaha 2G which is very similar but with lower quality mics built in. Both function very similarly. I found the sound quality for spoken word to be great, and for acoustic jamming, also quite fine. For recording a live band in a practice space (my intended use) I found the cheaper 2G to be a tad compressed and "washed out" sounding with a not very extended high end. The CX sounded clearer but with a reedy high end and poor bass response. Both models sounded FAR better when using a plug-in external stereo mic like a ATM-822. Lastly, the 2G plugs directly into your USB port without a cord. Convenient, but the design makes the USB port support the device, and it feels like it is putting strain on the port floating out of the side of your laptop 6". The CX uses a micro-USB cable to plug-in. I'm not sure this product is a great deal. I'd expect the mics to be better for the money, otherwise, you can just use the cheaper 2G model with a external mic and get better sound than the CX.
