Overview

Like the NTX1200 and NTX900, Yamaha's NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar easily accommodates a wide range of musical and playing styles and offers the perfect place to start exploring your music and nylon string sound. The versatile, contemporary styled NTX line is designed with thinner bodies, narrower necks, 14th fret neck joints, and cutaway designs to provide greater comfort and playability for today's steel-string acoustic and electric players.

This Yamaha guitar is perfect for adding nylon-string tone to a wide range of musical styles from latin to jazz, Pop to Rock. Built on the classical platform, Yamaha's NTX700 acoustic-electric classical guitar features a cutaway, for comfort when playing in the higher register fret positions. This NTX starts with a solid spruce top, for warm, balanced tone. The neck, back, and sides feature nato, a soft hardwood for a balanced, crisp sound and full volume range.

The Yamaha NTX700 also features the A.R.E. (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement), an original wood reforming technology developed by Yamaha. Through precise controll of temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure, the molecular properties of the wood can be manipulated into a more acoustically ideal condition, similar to the molecular characteristics of woods in instruments that have been played for years. In NX Series guitars, this treatment results in a sound close to that of a vintage guitar that has been played for years. It produces a sharper tone while simultaneously controlling dissonance in the high range. Instruments that have undergone this process have received high marks from a great number of musicians. Their evaluations are nearly identical to those for guitars that have been played for years, and their comments often include terms such as "well settled," "mature," "warm," "excellent resonance," and "clear."

Yamaha's ART (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) pickup system is purpose designed to offer the most natural, dynamic and expressive electro-acoustic sound on the market. Proprietary multi-layer contact sensors perfectly combine ultra-wide dynamic range with outstanding feedback rejection for the most accurate and natural performance sound. The Yamaha classical guitar uses a 2-way system with contact pickups mounted on the treble and bass sides of the guitar bridge. To reduce unwanted feedback caused by vibration the NX Series contact pickup uses an additional multilayer damper to ensure the tone is captured in its purest form. Complementing the warm, full mid-range of the nylon-string tone, the System 61 preamp allows individual volume control over the treble and bass side pickups, allowing you to get the perfect blend for your style. The System 61 preamp also features a 3-band EQ for sound shaping and an on-board tuner. Case sold separately.

I've been in the market for a good quality classical guitar for a few months now. I ran across this instrument at the Guitar Center in San Antonio, TX after checking out several other models, some costing well over twice as much that didn't impress me at all. This guitar meets all my demands and then some. The action is very smooth. I could easily play this thing for hours without getting fatigued. The tone is evenly warm and bright and very responsive. By far, what impressed me the most is the virtually flawless innotation. Call me picky, but I simply refuse to play any instrument that does not tune properly. I typically use a lot of broad and intricate voicings in my arrangements, and this little unit delivers like no other classical I've ever played! Without a doubt, this is the guitar I've been looking for. Try it, you'll buy it!

I've been playing a long time and have several guitars but none with nylon strings. I wanted a nylon stringed guitar as I do a lot of singer picking. The reviews for this guitar were so good. I played the guitar for a short time and I thought is sounded good and played well. I went back to buy it, but wanted to compare it to others and hear what it sounded like plugged in. I was not impressed. I picked up a cheaper thin Ibenez to compare and the Ibenez sounded better plugged in and unplugged. I played around with it for a long time, put in a new battery. the NTX700 plugged into an acoustic amp sounded muddled to me and not as clear and less body than the Ibenez. I intended to take this Yamaha home but it just didn't sound that great to me. I also felt the spacing at the first fret is cramped. I know it's not intended to be as wide as a true classical but its a bit too narrow for my fingers.

Low Low Action Plays Great

By Carlos

from Downey, CA

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

This is without a doubt one of the most playable guitars out there. The action is almost a low as some electrics !!! I went to guitar center and thought I was going to buy a steel string, but after playing this guitar I had to buy it. For this kind of money you will not find a better buy. Good sound, solid price, and it plays like slicing warm butter-smooth.

Love it!

By Troy Heatley

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

Great guitar. Have shopped around for months looking for a suitable classical guitar for me. I even bought another one about a hundred dollars less and had to take it back. The quality, sound, and playability didn't even compare to this Yamaha. Definately worth the price.

Better than i had hoped for

By dan mcclellan

from Houston Texas

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I have been playing for about 30 years and I have owned a lot of electric guitars. I have just within the last 10 years began to play and perform acoustic classic rock covers solo. I have an Alvarez jumbo acoustic and loved the amount of bass you could get from it so when I was going to buy a classical electric, I promptly ordered an Alvarez. I had it delivered to guitar center and picked it up. Long story short, it didn't work properly. I returned it to the store and while I was waiting for the guitar tech to come back from lunch, I played this Yamaha in the acoustic room. After about 45 mi playing it plugged into an amp, I was absolutely blown away by the sound it produced amplified. I returned the other guitar and brought this one home. When I got home and plugged it in to my own P.A. with 15" woofers, it was on a whole other level than anything I had previously owned. The range and adjustability of the tone is phenomenal. I play live with a looper pedal and can adjust the pickups to get a full bass tone as well as a slap tone. It has added a whole new realm of sonic possibility's to my playind and has become my primary live guitar for anything acoustic.

EXCELLENT GUITAR

By Robert

from N. Syracuse, NY

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

For the money, this is one fine guitar. The fit and finish are both excellent, and the set-up was beautiful....nice low action which makes it effortless to play. It sounds great both unplugged and amplified; it doesn't project as much as my Alvarez Yairi classical, but that's the nature of a shallower body style. Still, the bass notes are quite deep for the size of the guitar. Electronics work very well, and I especially like the fact that you can adjusts the bass and treble pickups separately. And, the 48 cm. nut width makes it easy to play for players used to traditional acoustics and electrics.

Incredible value for a pristine instrument

By FunkThat

from Z-ville, PA

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I just picked this up today, after playing it a few weeks ago and debating the purchase of a classical guitar. My very first guitar was a classical and it's heartbreaking to see what state it's in now. It was time for a new one and I had also written a song for my band intended to be Spanish sounding and to be played on a classical. After hours in GC testing different Cordoba's, Yamaha's, Takamine's and M. Rodriguez's I found this baby. I was looking to stay around $200 since I had just bought an electric. But this one played so beautifully and easily that I couldn't stop playing it. Everytime I went back to another model, I kept wanting this NTX700 back in my hands. The craftsmanship is pretty amazing for the price. It plays like a $1,000 guitar in my opinion and certainly sounds like one. It sounded fantastic for adult contemporary stuff like Sting plays, but also sounded very traditional with Rodrigo Y Gabriela type strumming. The latter in fact endorses this line of Yamaha's. I can see why, they sound impeccable. I've never played an acoustic guitar steel or nylon that felt this easy to play and had so much tone. The body is narrower, but if you normally play electric, you feel at home on this body. I plan on using it live, and it has a great array of EQ knobs and sliders as well as an on-board tuner. My only gripe is the tuner does not go into mute while it's on, so your audience will hear you tuning if you don't have a pedal tuner as well. Overall, a truly amazing buy for a guitar I plan on having for ages. I love that I found my classical sound again.

Love this Guitar

By Steve Argereow

from Pinehurst, NC

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

Iۡm a professional whose been playing since 1958. This Guitar is a fabulous instrument in this price range! It is light and has a great overall feel to it. The neck feels more like a steel string than a traditional classical neck, which are usually wider. Playability is superb! The instrument does not have a deep or pure classical sound when played as a pure acoustic or micۡed (Think Mason Williamۡs Classical Gas), If you intend playing under those conditions I would not recommend this guitar. However, when plugged into a sound system; I use 2 Bose L1 systems (large venues) or a Fender Acoustasonic SFX (small venues), this Guitar will blow you away! The Duel Pickups and Control Section allows me to adjust for just the sound I want. The instrument will play soft and beautifully on a ballad but also have a kick to it on and up-tempo light rock or country piece. It also seems like the 9V battery last 2 or 3 times longer than on my other guitars. This one of ten guitars I own, but I absolutely love playing the NTX700. I will be gigging with it somewhere in North Carolina this week. The NTX700 proves that you donۡt have to pay 3000 bucks to get a great guitar!

inspirational

By Phil Hawkin

from Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I am a rocker by nature, but have lately been listening to some great jazz players, and really began to enjoy the classical sound. I have a number of fine guitars, but decided I wanted to add a classical. As others have said, I played a lot of guitars and thought some of them were impressive. Then I saw this guitar hanging on the wall behind a kid who had been in the classical room for the hour I was there. Finally, I opened the door and reached across him to pluck this one from the wall. He was annoyed. As soon as I played one chord I knew it was the best of all I had trialled. As someone else said, the action is remarkable for a classical, the neck is a little more narrow, but the sound is what gets you from the first note. Don't hesitate, this is the one. And as far as inspiration, I've had my copy for about 4 months, and Peter White had better watch out!

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I had bought a Cordoba c5ce and it is a good guitar. But with my small hands and shorter reach I bought this Yamaha...What a difference for me. Since the neck is about the same size as my Taylor guitar it was an easy change from one guitar to the other. Have no regrets for buying this guitar. The finish is great..as is the action right out of the box. Sounds good but of course as the Cordoba but I thank Yamaha for making such a professional sounding and play guitar.

Excellence that Plays great

By ruben rivera

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I was in the market to buy new nylon string or a flamenco with electronics. I saw a flamenco but some parts were missing. It sounded nice (the pick up that is) also acoustically too. but when I saw this sexy guitar I had to pick it up and try it out. Acoustically it was good but when I plugged it up it was like Emerald Lagassi kick'in it up a notch. Both ways it sang like a piano to me. I named her Angel because she is so sweet to play, hold, and hug. that is how I care for my girlfriends ( guitars are considered my girlfriends to). This one is a winner. Thanks to guitar center who sold it to me. Guitar center you cam through for this satisfied customer. The action is smooth and low like I like it. The guitar is very to me responsive and amplified awesome. For those of you who want a good nylon for the price don't think twice" Buy it". In my opinion you wont go wrong.

I'm in love!

By Brett

from Roanoke, Texas

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

This NTX700 is my second Yamaha classical guitar and I absolutely love it. It plays wonderfully. The black paint finish is mirror smooth and the whole thing is just a work of art. I am definitely pleased with my decision to buy this guitar and would highly recommend it to someone looking to buy in the 500 dollar range. The neck is slightly thinner than most classical guitars, which might be helpful to people who play electrics or steel string acoustics.

Very Good Deal

By gigging

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I was shopping to find a back-up nylon for old Brazos nylon string I picked up in the 80s. I love Taylors and was thinking of ordering a Taylor NS when I happened across this guitar at the local GC. I played it for a few minutes and due to the low cost and decent build I decide to pick this up. I have had it for about three months now and I'm very pleased. Very easy to play, decent electronics and overall just a great value. If you are a fingerstyle steel string player looking to expand your sounds to nylon then this is a great place to start. I'm not sure this neck will suit pure classical players as it's more of a hybrid between electric and true classic necks/

Incredible Sound

By Robin

from Evansville, IN

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I amp this guitar through a Fender Acoustisonic Jr and love the sound. I use a BBE Sonic Stomp effects box on this amp with my other electric acoustics to get the full bodied sound I want but it is not necessary with the NTX700. The guitar plays like a dream and very fast neck. Easy to fret. Strings are placed a little farther apart than a steel string guitar (Like all classical guitars) but it is still easy to wrap your thumb around the neck to fret the low e-string for base chords. The sound hole plug cuts the feedback to an absolute minimum. Very light weight. Compact body like a dreadnought but very thin. The electronic tuner is incredibly accurate even on alternate tuning. The range of effects with the Series 61 ART electronics is easy to learn. I looked at several other amplified nylon string electrics. All were three times as much to get the sound quality and still didn't have the playability of this instrument. The string machines are high quality and the finish is perfect. From beginner to expert this is a great buy.

A nice little box as a intro into the world of nylon string

By Jerry Horton

from Marysville, KS

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

As a guy who plays jazz, blues, and sort of strangles fingerstyle into submission, I was specifically looking for a good classical guitar to both stretch myself and get another sonic tool without breaking into the piggy bank. I tried several - Cordoba, Breedlove, Ovation, and a few higher end ones (for which I still yearn, but that is not the story here) - when Nate in Colorado Springs suggested that I try this one. Well, I played the thing for about an hour straight before I bit the bullet and bought it. The stock strings pretty much stink but the solid spruce top makes even those sound good (of course, it could be the guy behind the strings...). If I have any complaints, there are two relatively minor ones. First, the back and sides are a material called nato - sort of a mahogany substitute - which is used a lot in ukeleles apparently. Nato, while relatively inexpensive, is not one of the better tone woods that I have heard, but it is very stable, requires less humidifying, and produces an even, if not brilliant, tonal response. Second, the body depth is reduced on this series which, naturally, reduces the sonic footprint and volume of the guitar. Nato and depth taken into account, the NTX 700 plays well, has a good voice (do you really expect a marvelous tone for under $600?), and it is a lot o' axe for the bucks. Special note: the electronics are superb! I recorded with this guitar the day I received it (mixed direct to board and live mike at 18") and was floored by the clean and crisp voice. If you are in the market, consider the NTX series!

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

Just picked it up this memorial day at the lehigh valley mall Guitar center. It's pretty much what others have stated. Yamaha has got everything right with this model. Price ,sound , looks , build quality , ease of playing. You would simply waste your time if you try to look for any other guitar at this price range. So save yourself some run around and just pick this one up.You may thank me later.

a great guitar 4 anything nylon

By Ruben Rivera

from east chicago Indiana

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

this guitar is by far the best nylon i chose 4 the money u can't beat it 4 the price and incredible sound. like Rodrigo and Gabriela say they r the price of a $1500.00 guitar they have the sound you would expect from a guitar of that price. They really meant it 2 I own one 4 about a yr yr and a 1/2 and paired it with the Fender Acoustasonic 150 and it is 2 me a good combo the amp makes it sing out what a nylon is supposed 2 sound like. If u adjust the amp and the EQ. pickup system you can make it sound flamencoish and classical and like a Spanish latin sound 2. I recomend this to anyone who wants a pro sounding guitar with out the pro price. happy playing thanks to hobart guitar center 4 selling it to me I love mine hope you love your when u get yours.

Excellent electric nylon-string guitar

By John

from Sacramento

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

I get a great "natural" sound plugged into my Fender G-Dec 15w amp which was completely unexpected as I thought I'd have to shell out for an expensive acoustic amp. You could just plug the G-Dec into a PA and be good to go. I boost the mid-range a bit and that works well for various fingerpicking styles and I get a nice thump out of the bass strings using palm damping. Flatpicking sounds good too using a medium thickness slightly flexible pick. I'd put on a clear pickguard if I did it a lot. The acoustic sound is just OK for practicing without disturbing others - muted and not dynamic. Workmanship is very good.

Plays and Sounds Great

By Erick Tan

from Wilmore, Kentucky

Comments about Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar:

Sonically, the first thing you need to get over with is the thin body sound. If you hear a full bodied classical right before playing this guitar, you will miss the bottom end. So this guitar is really built to be a plugged in performance instrument. And what a performer it is! The transducer system on this guitar is close to microphone character with enough uniqueness of its own to say, "listen carefully! I'm different!" The 3 band EQ solves the problem of the missing lower end. The built in tuner makes it my first choice guitar if I have to travel. The neck is comfortably wide and the radius fret board makes the bar chords easy and thus fun to play. The rosette around the oval sound hole is also special enough to make folks look 3+ times before they say, "what a beauty!"
