Overview

The Yamaha MOTIF is among the most respected keyboards of the current century. Through its many reincarnations, it has always been among the most revered instruments in professional stage and studio keyboard performance. The Yamaha MOXF8 is the latest iteration of this noble tradition, and stands again as a model of sonic excellence and technical functionality. The MOXF8 series combines a MOTIF XF sound engine and Flash memory expandability, a MIDI keyboard controller with extensive DAW and VST control, USB Audio/MIDI interfacing, onboard sequencing, and an extensive DAW / VST software bundle.

The Instrument
The MOXF8 features an 88-key GHS keyboard that provides authentic, realistic keyboard response—much like the playing feel of an acoustic piano—with a heavy touch in the bass register that changes to a lighter one in the treble, and a natural gradation of touch in between. Category search mode features 16 different instrument categories, each with its own sub-categories, so getting the sound you need is a fast and intuitive process. With Performance Creator you can easily build up layer or split performances with a single button press. Start with a voice you like, and then press LAYER to have the MOXF choose a suitable layer sound. Press SPLIT to call up a left hand bass sound automatically, and then go to DRUM ASSIGN to access the huge variety of built-in rhythm patterns available.

The Sounds
Yamaha has updated the popular MOX Series with the latest MOTIF XF technology by adding more sounds, more effects and even a Flash board option slot. Because it's compatible with MOTIF XF and MOX data, the MOXF has a huge collection of sound and sample libraries and optional software available right out of the box. Expandable, portable, affordable, and compatible with a wide range of other products, these instruments bring MOTIF music production power to a whole new generation of musicians and producers.

The Sequencer
MOXF features a built-in sequencer that lets you produce high-quality music without the need for a computer or any other external devices. This powerful tool offers both real-time recording, which records your performance data as you play it, and step recording, which is suitable for recording precise phrases or other difficult passages. You can even record particularly creative performances directly to a song or pattern simply by pressing the REC button.

The Effects
Yamaha’s proprietary VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) technology simulates the effects of vintage EQs, compressors, and phasers at the circuit level. This technology has enabled Yamaha to improve the quality of the instruments in the MOXF by modeling the sonic texture of vintage analog compressors, EQs and stomp boxes right down to their component transistors and resistors. The MOXF also puts the high-quality effects found in Yamaha's industry-standard digital recording consoles at your fingertips, as well as the award-winning REV-X reverb found in the SPX2000. It even comes equipped with vocoder effects, allowing you to connect a microphone to the MOXF’s A/D input terminal and apply effects to your voice or create stunning harmonies.

FEATURES

  • 88-key Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) action keybed provides realistic keyboard response
  • Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) technology simulates vintage EQs, compressors, and more
  • Advanced computer integration makes the MOXF the center of your music production studio
  • Category search mode with 16 different instrument categories with sub-categories
  • Lightweight and portable design make carrying the MOXF to rehearsals or gigs is easy

My biggest fear was that the MOXF8 would have too steep of a learning curve for somebody with limited experience such as myself. I've owned other keyboards, but nothing approaching the sophistication of this Yamaha product. While there are tons of amazing features, I've found the interface to be quite intuitive. Within a few hours of turning it on, I was able to figure out the basics, needing only minimal reference to the user manual. Making sequence patterns and converting them to songs is a fairly straightforward process. I won't list all the bells and whistles this thing has, because it would take hours to write. However, I can tell you the limits of the MOXF8 are only constrained by your own level of creativity. This keyboard really makes producing great-sounding music a breeze, even for someone who doesn't have an abundance of familiarity with synthesizers. The sound quality is beyond description. For example, drum samples on the MOXF8 sound better (and are more diverse) than those on my Roland E-kit. Guitars and woodwinds are very authentic. Using the built-in arpeggios make you sound like a pro, even if you're not. The variety of synth sounds is incredible. I highly recommend this to anyone who might be considering a workstation. This machine is definitely going to get heavy use for years to come.

This is a synth work station that does a lot of things really well, however, acoustic piano voicings are not its strong suit and I use AP tones heavily. The piano voices can be layered and will work adequately for solo presentations or studio work but is likely to either be lost in a band mix or alternatively, sound metallic at high volumes. I used this keyboard with both Roland and Mackie amps without achieving the desired tonality. Otherwise, the organs are very good, the electric pianos and clavs work well, and there are a multitude of very cool programmable settings. Yamaha has the best synthetic brass, woodwind and string sounds around IMO and I found the action to be simultaneously solid yet facile. I traded this unit in on a Roland which, perhaps apart from Nord, may have the best acoustic piano sounds extant based on my experience. The machine has a lot of impressive capabilities but i was never fully satisfied with the piano tones in a live performance with other instrumentation, yet it can be an impressive machine depending on your needs.

Motif on a diet!

By Richard C Dudley

from Ft. Collins,CO

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

At 32 pounds as compared to 63 pounds, the MOXF8 is a no brainer for anyone that has to haul a keyboard through the airports. This upgrade has all that I wished the MOX8 had at its debut. Key feel is better than my Motif or HA Nord Stage 2-76. The MOX8 feel was light, almost a semi-weighted feel comparable to the Nord SW Compact, so for those that want a piano feel, you will like this improvement. Organ shredders...maybe not so much. I have been using the MOX8 for 2 years so the MOXF was just a snap to set-up and go. The flash extension configures easily and allows you to add without deleting something else. Voices are much improved so thank Yamaha for kicking the Poly and memory up to the Motif Level. Hooks up with DAW just fine so you can create some incredible pads using the native voices with Omnisphere. Love this for soundtract composition. Plastic type case but I have dropped it and no issues. Like I say 32 pounds is way easier to haul than 60+. Enjoy!

Light weight-weighted action, with all the Motif sounds. It's hard to top this package!!!

By Larry Cunningham

from Midwest

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I played a verity of weighted keyboards over the last 25 years. Most of them Yamaha, as they continuously have built great weighted action into all their models, professional and home. Trying to cut down on dragging heavy equipment around, I've owned a M-Audio 88ES for the last year, coupled to a Motif rack. Nice and light but no controls at your fingertips. The MOXF8 has brought it all back home with amazing control, sounds and all in a 32 pound package. (I'm in my 60's now, and always looking for lighter weight! ;-)) I would highly recommend this board to anyone wanting great feeling weighted 88-keys, lots of controls and all the Motif XF sounds in a light-weight package!

    Yamaha MOXFantastic

    By Dustin Henson

    from Chattanooga TN

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

Everything from the look of this keyboard, to the feel and sound is amazing. I myself am not a HUGE synth/pad user. The music I do, I rarely venture far from Concert Grand and when I do, it's usually an organ or ep feel. I just upgraded from the MM8 model to this, and I'm in love. One of the greatest things for me, being familiar with the MOTIF ES and XF models is how similar this setup is. No extra time trying to learn how it's configured, how to load sounds, etc. Super user friendly, super light compared to other models, an virtually the same setup. I would recommend this keyboard to ANY regular gigger as a new go-to. Hands down worth the price of admission. Pros:Price, Feel, Sound, Versatility, And those pretty red book ends are pretty sweet. Cons:Does not have the sliders like to ES/XF! But DO NOT let that be the reason you pass up this keyboard.

THIS IS ONE POWERFUL MACHINE !

    By Patrick

    from Hawley,PA

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I'VE BEEN A PSR GUY FOR MANY YEARS. YAMAHA HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE ! This Machine is so completely powerful, and allows for complete freedom of expression, once you learn the little tricks involved with getting up and started. i cheated, and figured my own format to record with, as the user manual is pretty useless and time consuming. BUT, its a GREAT MACHINE, glad I got it, and even gladder I figured how to use it properly. you won't regret this if you're a serious keyboard player. great for recording, creating and performing. I LOIVE MY YAMAHA MOX -08 !

Super Board at a Super Price

    By JOSEPH CONSTANTINE

    from Tampa, Florida

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I was one of the first to order this board from GC. I've had it for 2 months now. I've used it in the studio and on gigs so I have really field tested this thing. First off, reliability has not been an issue and the build quality is very solid if a little cheaper (on the outside anyway) than the XF8. But on the inside, you get all of the Motif magic with flash memory! I have loaded up my sounds on flash and the results have been incredible with a total boot time of less than 10 seconds. I find the operating system very intuitive and simple. Layers and splits are a breeze. Drum assign is a nice addition. One criticism in other reviews I've read has been the feel of the keyed. I have to comment on this point because I am extremely picky about keyboard feel, having grown up playing some really nice acoustic pianos. This keyed is really great. I have compared it directly to the higher priced yamaha keyboards and being as particular as I am, I have to say the feel of this board is equal to or even better than higher end models. All voices & the added acoustic pianos are also beautiful and there is no difference in sound quality between this model and its big brother, which does have the advantage of sliders. But you can just plug an iPad into this thing and you have sliders that way if you really want them. No after touch but I don't miss it or notice at all. I have nothing but positive to say here and remember this is only 32 pounds for a sweet 88 key synth!

    Yamaha moFX8

    By Tony

    from Macon, GA

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

What a wonderful keyboard!!!!!! I took it to the limit very fast without a lot of need for the manuals. It is logically laid out. It do wish it had better control over midi output control. I am use to Roland controllers with 8 zones. Getting it down to one was difficult and sacrifices were made. Another down side for MAC users is that the Cubase that comes with it and the plug-ins did not like Yosemite. It did go right into Logic Pro. I was running very fast on it. It implements into Logic as a VST plug-in. The sounds are incredible. The Flash will keep this system running well for a long time. Spend the money and get the 1 gig flash ram...... I miss my Take 6 Vocal CD for my Kurzweil and I hope we can get this in my moFX8 soon. The layers were simple to program and were very strong. The arpeggiators had a lot to offer. THE ACTION IS GREAT!!!!!! I can't overstate how well this thing plays. The Pianos were SUPER. The Rhodes and Wurlitzers were incredible..... The strings are very useful and will fill up a track. The knobs make the synthesizers POP.... This thing weighs 33 pounds!!!!! Could it use improvements? Probably.... But overall, I am very impressed and can't wait to get it out on the gig. My studio is loving it...... I give it 5 Stars because of price. Bang for the buck, this is one of the strongest keyboards out there now. Thanks To Jason at the Macon, Ga store for all the things you do for the musicians here.......

Excellent selection of sounds and excellent quality, especially with headphones. Very nice action, very responsive, allows fine control especially during quiet passages. Good velocity sensitive control. Arpeggiators usually follow chords. Connects to PC via USB. Non-intuitive programming, lacks a touchscreen. Same basic organization as the MM, MO, MOX, MOXF, Motif, etc. lines.

This keyboard is the perfect keyboard for any advanced, or even intermediate pianist. After using the Yamaha P-95, I needed an upgrade for performing in theater. I bought the MOXF8 and have not been disappointed yet! The action on the keys is fantastic, and basic controls are very easy to use. There are a lot of features that can be overwhelming if you're not familiar with them, but unless you need those features, it's a great instrument. Pairing this keyboard with the JBL Eon One sound system makes the performing experience much better. I highly recommend this keyboard to anyone that is looking for an upgrade!

Comments about Yamaha MOXF8 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation:

I do not know where to begin singing the accolades of how great this unit is. I bought it from GC about 4 months ago.
The programming took some time but wow once you get it down the configuration is almost limitless; layers, splits with infinite combinations, live punch in and out of layered voices with no delay or pop, beautifully seamless. Moving from one patch to another is not as seamless but there is only a little delay and if you are aware of it you can work around it, I just put all my voices in layers for any particular song and use that, I only use the main patch for songs with a single voice, works great.
Action feels wonderful although maybe not as hard or with as much hammer action as a piano, but it is great for me and I have gotten to where I prefer it.
Sounds / voices, so realistic you close your eyes and you can see the instrument in your head, from an acoustic piano, Rhodes, Whurly (actually too may options way too many options for what I do), to the horns, synths and even the strings. The organ sounds are pretty good I do not use them because I have an SK1 and it allows for on the fly changes and acts more like a B-3 (if you want a good low cost organ I recommend it highly). It has the MOTIF engine for a fraction of the cost and weight.
It is light, get the bag that was made for it lots of extra space for pedals, cords and the power supply, it has rollers. This was one of the main considerations for buying this unit over the MOTIF. I looked at the Korg's and Kruzwells, but the Yamaha was just so much better and more versatile.
You are going to want to get the volume pedal, I got the Yamaha and it is really well made , I love it and recommend it over after market.adjusting the knob while trying to play is not easy., I am talking like the flash not human speed. Obviously a sustain pedal, I did not spill for the Yamaha I just got an after market that feels and looks like a piano pedal.
Just buy one you'll love it.
