Overview

Rugged and durable from the outside in and sonically sweet from the inside out, the new Yamaha MGP16X mixer is the perfect solution for venues who want a reliable, great sounding console to ensure that all of their presentations sound clear and full. The MGP16X possesses all of the features necessary to handle a wide variety of input requirements. The buit-in rack railing and included mounting kit make this mixer a perfect choice for any small to medium sized nightclub or function hall.

The MGP16X is also ideal for mobile solo acts and bands, as it is lightweight, sits comfortably and safely on a tabletop, and possesses all of the features a live act typically needs. From rehearsal to performance and even for simple recording, the MGP16X delivers a clean mix. The discrete Class A microphone preamps give your mics all of the bite and clarity they can possibly deliver. Add to that a 100 cycle high pass filter, dedicated compressor, and 48V phantom power all per channel, and you have an input scheme that can accommodate a wide variety of input devices.

Dual effects processors, a sweepable mid equalizer and posted high and low EQ knobs allow for detailed tailoring of each channel's sound. A versatile monitor mixing bus lets everyone on stage hear what they need to hear in order to deliver their best performance.

Other cool features include a ˜ducker,' which lowers the volume of background music anytime a vocal channel is engaged, making the MGP16X ideal for installations where presentations are sometimes made. There is a tap button for timing your delay processor settings and a variable stereo imager to make your music sound right no matter the size or shape of the room. Digital I/O for iPod or iPhone provides lossless clarity and punch for your "canned" music, either for between sets or for background music during presentations. The I/O even charges the connected device!

Patching accepts ¼" or XLR inputs in each of the mono channels and also accommodates RCA inputs from analog playback devices. The MGP16X mixer makes sounding great easy and straightforward.

Nicely done Yamaha

By David BIlodeau

Comments about Yamaha MGP Series MGP16X 16-Channel/4-Bus Mixer:

Did all the research I could find out there, just wanted to give a review of the gear so far. I un-boxed everything and loaded it right to my truck then took off to the fair grounds. Unloaded everything to the event tent and set it all up. I tried to read the manual on the way over (I had my buddy drive my truck) but, never got a real chance to go thru it. We winged it and got a fairly descent sound (as far as I could tell, I was doing sound from behind my kit). Then the tent next door (with 20,000 watts of power) cranked up their band and we were completely washed out. The night was miserable and couldn't wait to get it over with. Saturday morning in my studio however, I really dug into it. I set up the DXR15's on tripods and 1 Harbinger 18" powered sub in the middle. I tried multiple ways of hooking it up - with and without subs and found the most suitable setup is the standard, thru the subs, (1-sub for my studio size) Then I dug into the mixer and this is when the real fun started, the pre-amps are simply awesome, does not color the sound and very very quiet. And to my surprise - the compressor is outstanding, after finding the best mic placement (on my kick, snare & toms anyway) and adjusting with a nice pair of headphones. Moving down to the EQ and I now know what expressive eq is, it's all that - expressive, even the smallest adjustment is sonically evident. No need for an on board 7 band eq on the stereo output stage (like most other boards). A dbx drive rack is really all that's needed. Aux section is as easy as all other boards with the option of running the dual fx thru them, (love the xlr and 1/4 outs too). The dual DSP and SPX effects are usable and suffice for anything I'd need them for, their not the greatest stock settings BUT, I've also not hooked up an ipad or iphone to be able to adjust all the parameters of them, (I can't wait to do that). I also like that your settings will stay put even after power off and you can factory reset with a simple procedure, (in the manual). Having the faders for fx-1 and fx-2 is really cool too, gives you the option of a little more customization of fx on each track/input, (just make sure they're turned on). Routing is pretty standard that go very nicely with all the features of this board. I love the I/O, insert points @ each xlr input, stereo fx return, fx 1&2 send, ipod/iphone usb in, 2 tracks of L&R auxiliary inputs, 2 tracks stereo channel with digital integration etc... If your looking for a mixer that can do just about any type of audio situation imaginable - this one can handle it easy, not only with ease but a top quality sound. Yamaha scored BIG with this mixer! I bought/paired this up with the new DXR 15's and I could not be happier. My kit never sounded this good thru my old Mackie (American made years) VLZ1604.

Yamaha Does It Again

By John Havlicek

from East Hampton, NY

Comments about Yamaha MGP Series MGP16X 16-Channel/4-Bus Mixer:

I just got the MGP16X as a way to "scale back" my live rig. I wanted something very capable, good sounding and no bigger than absolutely necessary. I'm a major fan of Yamaha's stuff in general (both my keyboard and PA rigs are loaded with Yamaha stuff), because it generally works really well and is usually dead-reliable. I have to say that, after all these years, Yamaha is the one brand that continues to surprise me...in a good way. The preamps here are very clear and open, having (dare I say it?) a real sense of depth and detail that's immediately apparent if you've been using "mid-level" type mixing desks. The EQ is sweet and the effects are a step up from about all that I have heard included in "onboard" type effects sections. Patching/routing is extensive and all you could reasonably ask for, and then some. The visual feedback is excellent as well as to input activity (both signal and clip led's on every input) and there's plenty of auxes (2+2) for monitoring/foldback. All this and some very handy "extra features" (like onboard ducking tied to an input for voiceovers/announcements!, iPod and iPad connectivity etc.)...and all in a 12U rack mount configuration (rack rails included, but tucked into the frame sides if you don't want to rackmount) that doesn't feel "cramped". I do wish there was a lamp socket, but feel guilty even mentioning it this thing is so good. Having quite a bit of experience with many of the excellent-for-the-money MG Series mixers, this thing is noticeably better sounding and has the right amount of inputs for the average band (10 mic ins and 16 total). I'm stoked!

Exceeds All My Expectations

By John Havlicek

from East Hampton, NY

Comments about Yamaha MGP Series MGP16X 16-Channel/4-Bus Mixer:

I don't know where to begin with this thing. I've been using, and very happy with all of the MG series mixers. Two 24/14fx and a bunch of the smaller ones. All have been rock solid performers with good sound and versatility. The MGP is better...period! The preamps are cleaner and have the depth and detail you'd expect to have to pay big for. You could (if two tracks at a time works for you) record through this thing and get really good results. The effects and how they are implemented seem incrementally better as well. Having the two processors enables you to run a drum mix with it's own effects and save FX#2 for vocals and other instruments. The aux section is really good as well. Because FX1 and FX2 are not broken when plugging into their sends, you have the ability to get four sends (using aux 3 and aux 4 as well) going...very nice. Somehow, even the EQ sounds sweeter and just seems to work more effectively. As always, you should use as little EQ as possible with any desk...however, it sure is nice to have a great EQ when you need it! The flexibility of the MGP series is no small thing, and about any scenario should be covered. Lastly, everything feels comfortable and not cramped. The little "extras" like ducking (!), compression, levelling and usb, are icing on the cake. I was thinking it would be nice to have a lamp socket for those dark clubs, but then remembered that there's usb right on the control surface...DOH! Inexpensive LED usb gooseneck is on the way :)

Just Sounds Awesome

By Matt Hennessey

from Stratford CT

Comments about Yamaha MGP Series MGP16X 16-Channel/4-Bus Mixer:

I play acoustic guitar and sing in a duo. For years I was using a Tapco 6 channel mixer, with built in effects. It did the job. While on a cruise I saw an acoustic guitar duo, and they had amazing sound. I looked over at their mixer/ and saw it was a Yamaha. After the trip I bought the MGP16X. Took it out of the box and got setup. I tell you right from the first note this mixer sounds amazing. I have it going into a pair of Mackie SRM 450v2, and I use phantom powered direct boxes. The good feature is that each channel has its own phantom power switch, Some cheaper mixers have a single phantom power switch that activates every channel. This of course is a problem when you have a keyboard player with direct out on his/her keyboard, i.e. Roland RD700. The built in effects are really tight sounding and clear, there is this Tap feature with the digital delay that took me about 15 min to figure out, but once it is set, it sounds great. It has built in selectable compression on every channel, this works great at isolating sounds like piano from other bright instruments, like cymbals. The controls are easy to navigate and easy to read. In addition they included balanced outs for a separate group outs for different mixes, which is great for sending different mixes to different monitors. Finally, the manual is well written and informative, Which I always like, some companies just ruin the experience with a lousy manual.

Comments about Yamaha MGP Series MGP16X 16-Channel/4-Bus Mixer:

Adding to my earlier review, I have to put a couple of additional things out there. Turns out, that iPod/iPhone port WILL run a USB light. I bought a gooseneck light for my laptop, and plugged it in on a whim, light issues solved.

I can live without the phone capabilities, though I do wish more things in the DJ/Mixer world were Android friendly.

The longer I use this board, the happier I am with my purchase. I get compliments constantly at my (karaoke) shows about how singers sound better that other shows they go to.

Comments about Yamaha MGP Series MGP16X 16-Channel/4-Bus Mixer:

Loving everything about this mixer. I upgraded to this from the MG10XU. It's a world of difference. Of course, its a world of difference price-wise, as well.

I'm giving this a 5 star even though there's a couple of things I wish were different.

This is in comparison to some other mixers I've had the chance to mess around with, and the MG10XU.

    Pros:
    Much cleaner vocal mixes.
    Less feedback issues.
    Sound leveling.
    Two effects channels.
    Tap function on delays.
    Stereo Sound Blending

    Cons:
The USB port is only good for iPod/iPhones. Knew this going in, but I still dislike this.
No USB I/O for connecting to a computer. Disliked having to buy a secondary USB interface... again, knew this, but they have them on their lower end mixers, no reason it couldn't have been put on here.
No separate Monitor level for each channel. Using one of the aux sends for monitoring, so it's not a huge deal, but it could have been done.
No BNC or XLR connection for a mixer light. Again, these cons are all things I knew going in, but no place for a light with all the empty space on the front of the board around the useless iPod port is slightly disappointing.
