When I HAVE money, I have no problem paying more for a decent guitar. I think that if you want to play and sound good, you need a guitar with decent action, playability, PERFECT intonation, and the best tone you can find. I have owned Martins, Guilds, Gibsons and Fenders. The best guitar I have owned in the past was a Guild GAD-40CE with a Solid Mahogany back and side with a solid spruce top. The sound was rich, vibrant, and it's intonation was perfect. The retail price was $1,399. Now while the Yamaha FG730S is no Guild, the workmanship, however is comparable in many ways to the Guilds: 1) its Well made-The fit and finish similar, as well as the feel and look. The difference is that the Yamaha has a 2 piece solid spruce top while the Guild has a solid one piece spruce top. The back and sides (of the Yamaha) are Rosewood laminates, while the Guild sports all solid Mahogany. Tuning pegs are of higher quality on the Guild, and its a bit more ornate, yet the Yamaha looks VERY good with its side piping, mother of pearl inlays and glossy finish. The REAL impression comes when you PLAY the Yamaha. I picked this up from the wall display at Guitar Center, hit one chord and was BLOWN AWAY by TONE and sound I simply didn't expect from a guitar that had a sticker price under $300! The intonation was perfect, the playability was outstanding, the projection of tone was FAR superior to all the others in its price point and the only other guitars I could find to top it were selling for $1,500 and above. Yamaha has been making instruments for well over 100 years, so its no wonder these guys have figured a few things out. If you want to buy a GREAT instrument that will not let you down, but don't want to go broke in this GREAT economy then THIS is the instrument for you. I have been playing for over 25 years. This is the best value I have found to date. My next purchase will be higher end all solid wood Yamaha. If they pay as much attention to detail on their higher end guitars as they do their less expensive ones, its hard to imagine anything but greatness from these master instrument builders.

I bought this guitar as a gift for my husband. This is the guitar he has been waiting to buy all year and we finally bought it for him for Christmas. We opened it early when it came in the mail today. I purchased a brand new model and it came with dings and scratches. When money is tight and you spend $300+ on something you expect it to be in pristine condition. If he wanted a used and abused floor model we would have driven the 50 miles to a Guitar Center store and bought one. Structurally it is fine but i definitely did not get what I paid for. I'm really disappointed.

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

My son bought his FG 730s about 12-13 years ago while in high school, as a knock around guitar to take to parties. He then took it to college . He now has over 50 guitars, Martins, Gibson, Taylors, Breedlove just to name a few. The 730s still is on great shape and looks and plays better then you could imagine. With age it has become a true gem. I played it over this past Christmas Holiday ( it's been years since I played it) I could not put it down, so much that I took it back home with me so I could play it over the next few months until we get together again. It's a great inexpensive guitar and plays better then you would expect. No, it is not a Martin, Gibson or Taylor but what it is, is a great sounding instrument and continues to sound better with age.

Disappointed

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

Very disappointed. Purchased what I thought was a brand new guitar. It came with dings and scratches all over like it had been used as a floor model. Even the strings look rusty. My husband has been waiting for this guitar for a very long time and it takes always from the excitement when you get a used and abused brand new guitar.

I've been playing my F730S for 5 years, and still love it.
I dare you to find a better sounding acoustic guitar, for under 300 bucks.
...If you do, let me know, I'll buy that one too!

I still have my Yamaha from college in the early 70's, but wanted to update. I purchased the FG730S and am extremely pleased. I've started playing every day and enjoying the experience. I've also resurrected my old guitar and use it as well. Both sound great.

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I like nice guitars. My keen ear is sensitive to quality. I've had a Martin D28 since the 70's which gets better by the year. I had James Goodall make me two custom guitars, his Standard and his Baritone Jumbo. Out of Mertlewood they are without equal in every way and are a matching pair. I needed a campfire guitar so I was looking at Yamaha as my son owned a nice playing Yamaha that impressed me. When I ran into a Yamaha FG730S it impressed me so I bought it. I have had it a couple of years now and truth be known it's not far behind my D-28 or my Goodalls. Impressive and well built dreadnaught. Nice action and tone and impressive when you get on it. Highly recommend.

I bought 2 guitars withing the week before getting this one, having problems with both i decided to follow the guitar sales man Alan at the Clearwater Guitar center who recommended this to me the very first time i walked in. This guitar is BEAUTIFUL. It looks like some of the higher end taylors and sound very close!
