When I HAVE money, I have no problem paying more for a decent guitar. I think that if you want to play and sound good, you need a guitar with decent action, playability, PERFECT intonation, and the best tone you can find. I have owned Martins, Guilds, Gibsons and Fenders. The best guitar I have owned in the past was a Guild GAD-40CE with a Solid Mahogany back and side with a solid spruce top. The sound was rich, vibrant, and it's intonation was perfect. The retail price was $1,399. Now while the Yamaha FG730S is no Guild, the workmanship, however is comparable in many ways to the Guilds: 1) its Well made-The fit and finish similar, as well as the feel and look. The difference is that the Yamaha has a 2 piece solid spruce top while the Guild has a solid one piece spruce top. The back and sides (of the Yamaha) are Rosewood laminates, while the Guild sports all solid Mahogany. Tuning pegs are of higher quality on the Guild, and its a bit more ornate, yet the Yamaha looks VERY good with its side piping, mother of pearl inlays and glossy finish. The REAL impression comes when you PLAY the Yamaha. I picked this up from the wall display at Guitar Center, hit one chord and was BLOWN AWAY by TONE and sound I simply didn't expect from a guitar that had a sticker price under $300! The intonation was perfect, the playability was outstanding, the projection of tone was FAR superior to all the others in its price point and the only other guitars I could find to top it were selling for $1,500 and above. Yamaha has been making instruments for well over 100 years, so its no wonder these guys have figured a few things out. If you want to buy a GREAT instrument that will not let you down, but don't want to go broke in this GREAT economy then THIS is the instrument for you. I have been playing for over 25 years. This is the best value I have found to date. My next purchase will be higher end all solid wood Yamaha. If they pay as much attention to detail on their higher end guitars as they do their less expensive ones, its hard to imagine anything but greatness from these master instrument builders.

I bought this guitar as a gift for my husband. This is the guitar he has been waiting to buy all year and we finally bought it for him for Christmas. We opened it early when it came in the mail today. I purchased a brand new model and it came with dings and scratches. When money is tight and you spend $300+ on something you expect it to be in pristine condition. If he wanted a used and abused floor model we would have driven the 50 miles to a Guitar Center store and bought one. Structurally it is fine but i definitely did not get what I paid for. I'm really disappointed.

Great Guitar

By Calvin7658

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I have only recently started playing, but just through trying out different guitars i have been able to discern the difference between quality and cheap guitars. I must have overlooked the Yamaha a thousand times before i decided to try it. I couldn't believe the tone that came out of it, then i looked at the price tag and was amazed again. Needless to say i took this baby home with me the very same day and have not been dissapointed since. Great Guitar!

What a nice surprise!

By JeffW

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for many years. I have spent all of those years concentrating on electric guitar, but always used acoustics and classicals for various songs, practices, etc. I haven't owned an acoustic in a while, and I have recently gotten very seriously back into my hobby. I decided it was time to add a nice acoustic to my collection. I went to GuitarCenter in Memphis, and spent quite a bit of time in the acoustic guitar room. I tried many guitars across all price ranges. When I happened to pick up the Yamaha 730, I was first drawn to the beautiful craftmanship. It looked as nice as some more expensive guitars. I played it for a while and was sold. What a nice guitar for the price. This thing stays in tune and has a great tone. I bought an extra stand so it can sit out where I can pick it up anytime without hooking up cords, messing with amp settings, ect.

Every high,every low,everything in between!

By Bob Neaves

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

Have a 35 year old Yamaha acoustic that has aged gracefully and was looking for a new "main" ax. Played it for 10 minutes @ Guitar Center and took it home. Booming sound, highs, lows and mids are all clearly defined. XLNT for fingerpicking and hard rhythm. Now my son wants one...

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

What a nice guitar. I have several including a couple of very expensive ones and I continue to pick the Yamaha up to play. The others have found their way back to their cases and the 730 stays out on the stand. Great sound with the Elixer custom light strings! Easy to play and comfortable.Thsi guitar has a great look as well and i would recommend it to any and everyone looking for a new acoustic.

Bluesman's Dream

By Ed5150

from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

Fantastic guitar. No problem with volume, even lows sound crisp and clear. Highs are volumnous and resonance is extremely pure. The neck is extremely comfortable and allows for smooth, fast fingerwork. Outstanding value for the money. This guitar is comparable with others 200-300 dollars more expensive than it's full price. I haven't played an acoustic seriously for several years but took advantage of my daughter starting guitar lessons to get a nice model. Hate to say it, but the 62' strat may only get played for 2 hours a day for a while! Also, try it with a slide for a real treat.

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

My dad bought me this guitar several years ago shortly before he passed away. He was a lifelong musician, so he knew what guitars were worth the money. This guitar is perfect for beginners and people who want a cheap yet dependable guitar. I only tune this thing once or twice a year. I can pick it up and play it and it will be in tune after months of sitting in the case. It hasn't had new strings on it since he bought it over three years ago and it still sounds fantastic. Now that I am older and more experienced, I can recognize this guitar as the gem it is. You HAVE to add this to your collection!

Yamaha FG730S

By ttmnky

from Vacnopuver, BC

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

As a beginner guitarist, I found the Yamaha FG730S to be a very suitable guitar. A solid top at this price range is incredible, and teh action is low enough so that it is easy to play barre chords, but not so low that there is a lot of fret-buzz. The overall sound of the guitar very warm, and the guitar is perfectly suited for small get-togethers or playing around the campfire.

Not So Much

By ImNotGivingYouMyName

from Boston MA

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I used to own this guitar for a year until i sold it. Its a good buy and a fine guitar, but its too bright and "tinny." You can do much better for the price, like an Ibanez or Washburn. Its not at all a bad guitar, but after a while, instead of getting a warmer sound, it sounds more artificial. Ok but, you can do better for the price

A good starter guitar.

By MARVIN CAMPBELL

from Olathe, Kansas

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I went to the Guiter Center with a budget ceiling of $500 and swore I wouldn't leave without a guitar. I tried this guitar in the Center and was surprised by the sound. I continued to go around the room trying models and brands and came back to this one several times. As a beginner guitar player I couldn't have made a better choice. I've been playing for just over a year now and feel I'm ready to move up. I've ordered a Taylor but will probably keep this Yamaha as my carry around guitar, because it's just a good guitar for the price. The fit and finish are excellent, it stays in tune with Elixir strings, and it looks and sounds like a more expensive guitar. I think for the money you can't go wrong with this instrument.
