When I HAVE money, I have no problem paying more for a decent guitar. I think that if you want to play and sound good, you need a guitar with decent action, playability, PERFECT intonation, and the best tone you can find. I have owned Martins, Guilds, Gibsons and Fenders. The best guitar I have owned in the past was a Guild GAD-40CE with a Solid Mahogany back and side with a solid spruce top. The sound was rich, vibrant, and it's intonation was perfect. The retail price was $1,399. Now while the Yamaha FG730S is no Guild, the workmanship, however is comparable in many ways to the Guilds: 1) its Well made-The fit and finish similar, as well as the feel and look. The difference is that the Yamaha has a 2 piece solid spruce top while the Guild has a solid one piece spruce top. The back and sides (of the Yamaha) are Rosewood laminates, while the Guild sports all solid Mahogany. Tuning pegs are of higher quality on the Guild, and its a bit more ornate, yet the Yamaha looks VERY good with its side piping, mother of pearl inlays and glossy finish. The REAL impression comes when you PLAY the Yamaha. I picked this up from the wall display at Guitar Center, hit one chord and was BLOWN AWAY by TONE and sound I simply didn't expect from a guitar that had a sticker price under $300! The intonation was perfect, the playability was outstanding, the projection of tone was FAR superior to all the others in its price point and the only other guitars I could find to top it were selling for $1,500 and above. Yamaha has been making instruments for well over 100 years, so its no wonder these guys have figured a few things out. If you want to buy a GREAT instrument that will not let you down, but don't want to go broke in this GREAT economy then THIS is the instrument for you. I have been playing for over 25 years. This is the best value I have found to date. My next purchase will be higher end all solid wood Yamaha. If they pay as much attention to detail on their higher end guitars as they do their less expensive ones, its hard to imagine anything but greatness from these master instrument builders.

The brand new FG730s that I received looked terrible. Not only were there scratches on the neck and fretboard, the top looked like it had been made from scrap wood. The top was NOT bookmatched at all. One side of the top was significantly darker than the other resulting a very poor appearance. I would not recommend the FG730S due to, IMHO, a complete lack of quality control.

Nice, Very Nice

By Ron Rossi

from Langhorne, PA

Been thinking about getting a new acoustic guitar for a while. I have a 1971 Epiphone 6830 dreadnought that developed some neck block problems. I reset the neck to make it playable again, but it has some shortcomings. So, after test driving a number of lower priced ($200-$400) acoustics at GC, It came down to one, the Yamaha FG730S. It came set up just about right. the neck is straight, the action is OK, could be a tad lower, but it plays just fine. The sound is full and robust. I couldn't have made a better choice in this price range. I also had considered the FG700S, but since the 730S was on sale it was an easy buy.

Nice guitar. set up out of the box was just about right. action is ok, could be a tad lower. But, I'll let it sit this way for a little while before making any adjustments. Got a great deal during presidents day sale.

Good Guitar

By Stephen King

from Lebanon, Ohio

After Playing the FG700S I did expect a little more from this guitar. It looks amazing but the the sounds from one to the next are VERY inconsistant. This goes the same for any guitar but I have picked up some rather "Tinny" sounding FG730S guitars. When you find a good one take it home. Play it in every room, take it outside, play at a friends house. You may change your mind and take it back or you may have just purchased the best guitar you can buy for under $700-800. It is "better" than the 700S but it is hit and miss. Bottom line, yes I do recommend the product but like with any guitar take it home and they all sound different.

Great guitar for the price!!

By Donny Fath

from Michigan

I bought this a few days ago, I was in between guitars and needed something that sounded great and was easy on the wallet. When I walked in i was looking at the Yamaha fs720s and i found this one and was blown away! The quality was amazing for the price! when i saw how much it was i went for it! This guitar has a great bright sound and the volume is nothing short of amazing. Bottom line if you are on a budget and you're looking for a good quality guitar this is it!

A good starter guitar.

By MARVIN CAMPBELL

from Olathe, Kansas

I went to the Guiter Center with a budget ceiling of $500 and swore I wouldn't leave without a guitar. I tried this guitar in the Center and was surprised by the sound. I continued to go around the room trying models and brands and came back to this one several times. As a beginner guitar player I couldn't have made a better choice. I've been playing for just over a year now and feel I'm ready to move up. I've ordered a Taylor but will probably keep this Yamaha as my carry around guitar, because it's just a good guitar for the price. The fit and finish are excellent, it stays in tune with Elixir strings, and it looks and sounds like a more expensive guitar. I think for the money you can't go wrong with this instrument.

Great All Around!

By Michael Neal

from Norfolk, Va

My first totally new guitar in years, couldn't be more pleased. Sounds great right off the shop wall. A quick trip to the back room for a quick set up and some of my favorite strings, and I've got a great guitar for a really good price. Love the way the neck fits my hand, action is good, sounds great. No regrets choosing Yamaha.

Fantastic Value

By James Sanders

from Aurora, IL

Preface--I'm at best an intermediate player and haven't loads of experience with different acoustics. Having done quite a bit of research, I came into GC thinking I'd get a different guitar. I played several, some quite a bit more expensive than the Yamaha, some American or Canadian made. But once I picked up the 730, it just sounded better and felt better. I was amazed at its clarity and depth, without tinniness or buzz. Good action. Keeps in tune and is actually quite a beautiful instrument. I've had it now for several months and I always look forward to playing it. When I reflect on how little it cost, I feel even more satisfied with the Yamaha. A great product.

Great Guitar

By Joshua Bowles

from Kansas

I got this guitar a few weeks ago. I've been playing for 16 years. This yamaha fg730s is an awesome guitar. The sound is amazing, and the tobacco sunburst I got looks amazing too. I had lost my passion for playing the last few years, but this guitar has renewed my passion for playing music. I highly recommend, you will not be disapointed.

Yamaha Cherry Sunburst is a Stunner!

By Kathy Raisin

from Georgia

We recently purchased the Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar Cherry Sunburst online as a gift for our teenager. This is a beautiful guitar- the photos don't do it justice. The rosewood fingerboard and bridge is gorgeous-the tortoise pickguard has mother of pearl accents. The sound is mellow, and very easy on the ears.It needed some tuning and was ready to play. Her guitar instructor was very impressed by the sound and quality- he kept saying what a nice guitar this was! It lacks a guitar strap button- this can be added at the Guitar Center or a home. We ordered online and received it very quickly even though it was back orderd.I needed to call customer service about shipping date and they were very helpful and kind. This makes a great gift!
