When I HAVE money, I have no problem paying more for a decent guitar. I think that if you want to play and sound good, you need a guitar with decent action, playability, PERFECT intonation, and the best tone you can find. I have owned Martins, Guilds, Gibsons and Fenders. The best guitar I have owned in the past was a Guild GAD-40CE with a Solid Mahogany back and side with a solid spruce top. The sound was rich, vibrant, and it's intonation was perfect. The retail price was $1,399. Now while the Yamaha FG730S is no Guild, the workmanship, however is comparable in many ways to the Guilds: 1) its Well made-The fit and finish similar, as well as the feel and look. The difference is that the Yamaha has a 2 piece solid spruce top while the Guild has a solid one piece spruce top. The back and sides (of the Yamaha) are Rosewood laminates, while the Guild sports all solid Mahogany. Tuning pegs are of higher quality on the Guild, and its a bit more ornate, yet the Yamaha looks VERY good with its side piping, mother of pearl inlays and glossy finish. The REAL impression comes when you PLAY the Yamaha. I picked this up from the wall display at Guitar Center, hit one chord and was BLOWN AWAY by TONE and sound I simply didn't expect from a guitar that had a sticker price under $300! The intonation was perfect, the playability was outstanding, the projection of tone was FAR superior to all the others in its price point and the only other guitars I could find to top it were selling for $1,500 and above. Yamaha has been making instruments for well over 100 years, so its no wonder these guys have figured a few things out. If you want to buy a GREAT instrument that will not let you down, but don't want to go broke in this GREAT economy then THIS is the instrument for you. I have been playing for over 25 years. This is the best value I have found to date. My next purchase will be higher end all solid wood Yamaha. If they pay as much attention to detail on their higher end guitars as they do their less expensive ones, its hard to imagine anything but greatness from these master instrument builders.

The brand new FG730s that I received looked terrible. Not only were there scratches on the neck and fretboard, the top looked like it had been made from scrap wood. The top was NOT bookmatched at all. One side of the top was significantly darker than the other resulting a very poor appearance. I would not recommend the FG730S due to, IMHO, a complete lack of quality control.

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I still have my Yamaha from college in the early 70's, but wanted to update. I purchased the FG730S and am extremely pleased. I've started playing every day and enjoying the experience. I've also resurrected my old guitar and use it as well. Both sound great.

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

I like nice guitars. My keen ear is sensitive to quality. I've had a Martin D28 since the 70's which gets better by the year. I had James Goodall make me two custom guitars, his Standard and his Baritone Jumbo. Out of Mertlewood they are without equal in every way and are a matching pair. I needed a campfire guitar so I was looking at Yamaha as my son owned a nice playing Yamaha that impressed me. When I ran into a Yamaha FG730S it impressed me so I bought it. I have had it a couple of years now and truth be known it's not far behind my D-28 or my Goodalls. Impressive and well built dreadnaught. Nice action and tone and impressive when you get on it. Highly recommend.

I bought this guitar for my son, after a musician friend recommended it, and my son couldn't have been happier with it. He loves the way it sounds and how it feels. It's the perfect size and it stays in tune.

I bought 2 guitars withing the week before getting this one, having problems with both i decided to follow the guitar sales man Alan at the Clearwater Guitar center who recommended this to me the very first time i walked in. This guitar is BEAUTIFUL. It looks like some of the higher end taylors and sound very close!

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

My dad bought me this guitar several years ago shortly before he passed away. He was a lifelong musician, so he knew what guitars were worth the money. This guitar is perfect for beginners and people who want a cheap yet dependable guitar. I only tune this thing once or twice a year. I can pick it up and play it and it will be in tune after months of sitting in the case. It hasn't had new strings on it since he bought it over three years ago and it still sounds fantastic. Now that I am older and more experienced, I can recognize this guitar as the gem it is. You HAVE to add this to your collection!

I've had this guitar aprox 6 months and am very pleased. Tone perfect. Natural finish beautiful. Sound is deep and sustains great. Action is set perfect, easy to play but not too low to buzz. I echo previous reviews....this is as close to a Martin or Taylor sound as you're going to get at a budget friendly price. Very good, well rounded guitar. Kudos to Yamaha for making such a great sounding acoustic.

            Nice, Very Nice

Comments about Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar:

Been thinking about getting a new acoustic guitar for a while. I have a 1971 Epiphone 6830 dreadnought that developed some neck block problems. I reset the neck to make it playable again, but it has some shortcomings. So, after test driving a number of lower priced ($200-$400) acoustics at GC, It came down to one, the Yamaha FG730S. It came set up just about right. the neck is straight, the action is OK, could be a tad lower, but it plays just fine. The sound is full and robust. I couldn't have made a better choice in this price range. I also had considered the FG700S, but since the 730S was on sale it was an easy buy.

Nice guitar. set up out of the box was just about right. action is ok, could be a tad lower. But, I'll let it sit this way for a little while before making any adjustments. Got a great deal during presidents day sale.
