Overview

Yamaha's FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar is a reasonably priced entry-level acoustic guitar featuring one of the most popular tonewoods - solid Sitka spruce - for the top. This gives you a nice mellow tone with a slower response, and keeps the guitar nice and lightweight, a combination that is ideal for a beginner trying to find their way around the instrument. The nato back and sides also keeps the guitar lightweight and inexpensive while not sacrifcing tone. Other features of the FG700S include a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, black and white body binding, die-cast tuners, and a tortoise pickguard. Case sold separately.

I got this acoustic a GC after my birthday. After browsing the store for weeks, I decided on a acoustic and narrowed it down to about 10 models which included Ibanazes, Fenders, Epiphones and Ovations. I had very little time that day to pick one out from the hundreds of guitars they have so I asked one of the staff for help. He asked me a few questions like what was my price range is this my first guitar and so forth. When I told him my price range was $150-$250 and I didn't need a acoustic/electric, he immediatly grabbed a Yamaha FG700s from the rack. It seemed that he was quite estatic about this particular guitar. I asked another staff member just for a second opinion and he too was very positive about this model. After trying it out for 10 min. I decided to go with their word and buy the FG700s. Details I noticed: What really first grabbed my attention was the finish. Bleeding gorgoues. If it had the label Taylor on the headstock I wouldn't have any trouble believing it. The looks are practically on par with the $700-$1000 acoustics yousee in the high-end companies. The top is made of a solid Sitka Spruce top which has a absolutely awesome tone. The large body lets it be loud without strumming hard. The hardware is great, so much better than the tuners on the Squire I've been borrowing. I tuned it when I first brought it home and stayed in tune for about 3 weeks. The neck gives it a very long sweet sustain. The finished mahogany makes the neck easy to play and beautiful to boot. There's only a couple of things I dislike about this. Firstly there is no dot inlay on the third fret which makes it slightly difficult for a beginner such as myself. Also, the body is not exactly as easy to play as a shallo roundback so it may be a little bit uncomfortable at first. I would recommend this to anyone who is beggining playing and/or has a sub $300 budget. This is a great acoustic justas the people at GC said.

I bought this because I thought it would be better than my Epiphone PR150..I am taking a guitar class at the community college..it seems higher quality, but the strings are so high up compared to my Epiphone it makes it difficult to play. I have yet to get used to it I guess. I also wish it had a dot on the third fret.

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I am a pretty amature player. However I have played around with quite a few guitars for fun and shopping for my own. I got very lucky with this guitar. I was playing around with acoustics and the floor model of this guitar had been sold that day and not restocked yet. A man came in and asked for one right in front of me. I asked to see one too. Loved it immediately. It stays in tune so much better than my 400$ electric and I play it over my electric when I'm just messing around. I love this guitar enough to review it. Year and a half relationship still going strong. Best new guitar for price!

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:

Honestly, this is the best acoustic you can buy at this point in time for under a grand. AND they're discontinuing this model so grab one before they're gone! I've played and owned many of the sub-1000 Martins and Epiphones and this absolutely destroys them all. Much more projection, better tone, better playability, and superb durability. Almost frighteningly, this played just as well as a Taylor 800 series I tried recently and even sounded a little more to my liking (aka it doesn't have that weird taylor-mid scoopy thing happening).

One piece of advice, get it setup by a pro or if you have the knowledge be prepared to do a setup yourself. That and restring it with a set of Martin 80/20 Lights. That'll get you the absolute most out of this fine instrument.

Comments about Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I listened to so many acoustic guitars at the Guitar Center and decided the FG700S was the perfect one for me. I had to wait a few days for a special order; (they were out of stock) and I'm so glad I waiting.
