The DXR12 is an extremely high-powered 12" loudspeaker capable of producing a maximum SPL of 132dB with its impressive 1100W of power. It is an ideal solution for live sound applications where a wide bandwidth and extremely high resolution sound are required. This bass reflex-style speaker offers a generous frequency range of 52Hz-20kHz, D-CONTOUR multi-band dynamic processing, selectable built-in crossover to easily add a subwoofer, and works well as a main speak or floor monitor.

DXR Series Breakdown
Performance runs in the family, and like the acclaimed DSR Series before it, DXR Series loudspeakers offer superb high-definition sound and class-leading sound pressure levels-yet in a more compact and extremely functional design for more diversity. The DXR Series loudspeakers are perfectly suited for front-of-house sound, monitors, simple amplification, rigged applications and more. Combining the series with Yamaha's newly designed DXS subwoofers (sold separately) will further elevate your system's performance, giving you wider control of its thunderous bottom end. With the perfect balance of raw power and innovative speaker technologies, you can depend on DXR Series speakers to deliver the full power of your performance to every member of your audience.

The Power of "D"
Yamaha's development team took full advantage of a number of advanced digital technologies, both new and refined, based on Yamaha's extensive experience accumulated over many long years of developing professional audio equipment. Everything from the detailed management of crossover, EQ and time alignment to the limiter settings, protection functions and precise dynamic control of the sound, was subjected to endless simulation, in-house and field testing to ensure that these speakers produce the highest level of sound quality at the highest output levels possible. Combined with Yamaha's advanced analog signal processing and acoustic technologies, the "Power of "D" delivers ultimate performance.

Ultra-Precise 48-bit DSP Processing for High-Definition Sound
All full-range models feature Yamaha's proprietary FIR-X tuning utilizing linear phase FIR filters for the crossover network. FIR-X tuning simultaneously optimizes frequency and phase response while adjusting the time alignment between the HF and LF transducers. This creates a very smooth response around the crossover point, providing much better clarity and imaging than what is possible with typical crossovers.

All signals are precisely processed by a 48-bit (76-bit accumulator) high-performance processor for high-definition sound quality. All full-range models employ high-precision 24-bit discrete A/D and D/A converters with superior S/N ratio and dynamic range.

Intelligent Dynamic Control for Consistent Clarity at Any Output Level
D-CONTOUR is an intelligent multi-band compressor that gives you powerful and consistent sound throughout all output levels. By constantly monitoring the output of multiple frequency bands and calculating the optimum EQ adjustments for each, even the maximum sound output maintains outstanding clarity and musicality.
With the DXR Series, D-CONTOUR provides a more detailed tuning of your sound with two different settings: FOH/ MAIN mode or MONITOR mode. FOH/MAIN mode boosts low-frequency to compensate for low-end that is typically missing when speakers are used in suspended applications or mounted on a speaker stand. MONITOR mode is completely optimized for floor monitor application by intelligently taming down the low-frequency that adds up due to floor reflection, smoothing out a wide range of frequency bands to give you stunning clarity for monitoring your sound. Both of these presets were perfected by performing countless listening tests with skilled sound engineers, giving you a multi-band compressor that performs dynamically, delivering consistent sound with low distortion at any output level.

Extensive DSP Protection Functions for Maximum Output
In a typical system comprising passive loudspeakers, power amps and signal processors, trying to set optimal parameters for each component can be a daunting task. One of the advantages of active loudspeakers is that the combination of transducers and amps can be perfectly optimized. During the development of the DXR series, Yamaha measured and tested the durability of each transducer and the overall amp output through countless indoor and outdoor listening tests. Based on the test results, they were able to set the optimal limiter point for each model using precise DSP control.

In addition to the optimal limiting, these speakers employ many of the same protection functions used in their top-class TXn Series professional power amplifiers. A microprocessor and high-power DSP monitor the status of the power supply, power amplifiers, transducers and ongoing signals to protect all aspects of each component. As a result, these speakers can perform to their full potential while ensuring reliable operation in even the most severe conditions.

High-Efficiency 1100W Class-D Amplifiers
All DXR Series loudspeakers are equipped with highly efficient Class-D amplifiers that were optimally designed to match the DXR's HF and LF transducers. These high-performance amplifiers deliver the highest sound output in their class with 1100W of power, producing an impressive SPL. They also provide very fast attack and superior transient response, which greatly contribute to these speakers' incredible audio performance.

Universal Switching-Mode Power Supply
The DXR Series employs an all-new, high-efficiency switching-mode power supply for its outstanding performance. The power supply is also suitable for use worldwide with its multi-voltage design.

Intelligent Onboard 3-Channel Mixer
The DXR Series features a flexible onboard mixer with a variety of input, making it ideal for simple vocal/ instrument amplification. With its flexible IN/OUT, the DXR Series can comprise a full sound reinforcement system, or seamlessly integrate into a setup utilizing DSR or DXS Series speakers.

Versatile Mic and Line Level Input Capability
The DXR onboard mixer can handle up to three simultaneous inputs. It accepts both Mic and Line level input, giving you the flexibility to connect to a variety of sources from microphones to line level instruments and portable audio devices. When in MIC position, an HPF is automatically activated to roll off unwanted low frequency.

Smart Mixing / Linking Function
Each channel has an individual volume control, letting you mix three discrete audio sources. THRU out passes the input signal from Channel 1 and LINK OUT sends mixed signal from all channels-ideal for daisy-chaining or routing the signal to another destination. LINK OUT is very useful for configuring a compact SR system with another DXR, while LINK MODE allows you to easily switch between stereo or dual-mono configurations.

Custom-Designed DXR Transducers
All DXR Series transducers were meticulously selected and thoroughly customized to deliver ultimate performance. The detailed characteristics and behavior of each transducer was fully analyzed and evaluated with sophisticated computer simulations in order to help realize their full performance potential. The high power output woofers deliver very low distortion and defined, deep bass, while the 1.4" precision compression drivers produce accurate midrange and high frequencies up to 20kHz.

DXR Wide Dispersion Constant Directivity Horn
The HF transducer is mounted to an all-new 90x 60constant directivity horn, designed with the goal of minimizing radiation pattern deterioration in oblique directions as more conventional horns are prone to doing. This can help to achieve a more ideal coverage area without irregularities. With the new wide dispersion constant directivity horn, sound expands in a more rectangular pattern providing 90 horizontal x 60 vertical coverage, with wide-frequency sound projected to the edges of the coverage area.

Durable, Compact ABS Enclosures
Full-range models are moulded in rugged, non-resonant ABS enclosures and are designed to dampen down vibrations caused by high-output levels, producing less distortion and superior sonic quality. The road-tested enclosures are equipped with heavy-duty steel grilles and ergonomic, gripped aluminum handles that greatly improve durability and portability.

Dual-Angle Polemount Socket
Depending on the venue, sometimes your mix can fall prey to low ceilings or other room attributes that can impede a clear, even mix and detract from the audiences' listening experience significantly. The DXR's polemount socket offers two positions (0 and 7) to direct the acoustic energy away from reflective surfaces and on to your audience where it belongs.

Rigging Points for Standard Eye-Bolts and Optional U-Brackets
DXR Series loudspeakers come equipped with rigging points, allowing for rigged application with standard eyebolts (not included). When more versatility is required, optional U-brackets allow simple and easy rigging in both horizontal and vertical configurations.

Symmetrical Enclosure Design for Mirror-Mode Floor Monitoring
The DXR12's enclosure design enables mirror-mode monitor placement that creates a symmetrical sound field for the performer with a larger, more defined "sweet spot". Used in either a balanced dual-mono configuration or a stereo monitor mix setup, mirror-mode floor monitoring can enhance your performance considerably.

A Pleasant Surprise

By Matthew Andrae

from Santa Fe, New Mexico

Comments about Yamaha DXR12 12" Active Speaker:

I had the opportunity tonight to try new, out-of-the-box DXR12s and 10s that had just arrived at a gig I was playing. I had my usual QSC k12s and 10s ready to go but I was overcome by curiosity so I thought I would give them (the Yamahas) a try. The weight of the cabinets are approximately the same in that they feel very solid and don?t sound like a drum when you give them a thump. The inputs were flexible with XLR, 14? and RCAs all with their own pots, which might be nice if you need some extra mixing in a pinch. Furthermore, there were three contours to choose from that seemed like they were useful- I contoured the 10s to take out a little base and to jump the highs a bit but it was too thin for me so I changed it back to flat. I did not play with the link mode as I did not have the manuals handy but I can tell you that if you accidentally light up the amps in the wrong order, you don?t get that giant power spike pop from further down your chain of linked speakers like the QSCs do (it doesn?t sound like much of an advantage unless you are setting up monitors and mains by yourself with a speaker you have never worked with in a new room under a time line with people already in the venue that you would rather not scare with a 1400 watt nominal pop). As for the cabs, they seem to be the same material as the QSCs (which are incredibly tough). The feet and the cabinet angles are set up to let you monitor with the speaker lying on either side, which is nice. And now, for the sound: The short version is that I decided to leave them up and use them. Remember, I just set them up, dialed them in for five minutes and did the gig (MOTU Ultralite mixer and Neumann KMS 104 mic). With a little time spent with them, I am sure I could tweak them a bit and get some pretty great sound, but they were very clear, honest and accurate. The drivers did not sound tight and stifled like some new speakers do, which makes me wonder how much mass they have in the cones and surrounds compared to the QSCs, which took a while to unfold. I surprised myself several times during the gig when I looked down expecting my QSCs. I believe Yamaha went for a very similar product in both price and performance to the QSC K12s and 10s and I think they got the sound right. Of course, it remains to be seen how well they perform over the long run but for now, the world is a better place because there are now two companies making vastly superior sounding speakers at very reasonable prices.

What a Powerhouse!

By Joe Kosciuszek

Comments about Yamaha DXR12 12" Active Speaker:

I recently purchased these speakers at my local Guitar Center and I have to say they are very impressive! Before purchasing I did a sound test with the other Yamaha gear that was at the store and although the DXR15 looked and sounded very nice, these sounded exactly the same to my ears in store. I was told the only real differences were the dimensions of the sound output and the frequency response. Albeit they might not go down as low as the DXR15 I honestly couldn't tell the difference. To add to that, I'm pairing them with a DXS15 subwoofer which really brings out the low boomy bass while these slick boxes bring the punchy powerful sound to the table. This is an upgrade for me coming from a pair of Mackie Th-15A's and I can say that it isn't a night and day difference between the two speakers but it is enough to be worth it and is noticeable in sound quality. While the Thumps from Mackie tend to be very bass heavy, the Yamahas are very well balanced and are much more even across the spectrum of sound as far as I can tell. The highs cut through much better but not to the point where they are harsh on the ears. and the biggest difference is the wattage. The Mackies only provide 400W while the Yamahas are almost three times that at an earsplitting 1100W. This solves my problem of not being able to talk on the mic over music with the Mackies. These boxes are exactly what I was expecting quality-wise from Yamaha and they represent the company well. My only gripe out of the whole package is the plastic they used to make the structure of the box. It is a very sound and sturdy plastic but it has a real nice matte finish to it that can be scratched very easily. One of mine actually had a few scuff marks on the top but nothing that was noticeable without a close inspection. To solve this problem, just order the cases provided by Yamaha and you should be all set, they're expensive but they are a thick material that will be sure to last and protect your investment for years to come. My last comments about these cabinets are that they are very powerful so be use the volume knobs with care as they almost seem to increase exponentially. The sound that comes out of these is unreal and sounds very realistic. I would recommend them to anyone who asked for a price conscious powered speaker. Also even though Yamaha is usually on the exclusion list, ask for the discounts from Guitar Center for the frequent coupon deals they run, you'd be surprised at how much you can save. Pros: -Loud -Very powerful -Lots of options for inputs and outputs on internal mixer -Double pole mount provides 7 degree downward position -Tight, distinguished bass -Clear highs that cut through lows -Natural sounding -Sleek look -No "minimum volume" level as in Mackies Cons: -Delicate casing material Overall these are absolutely amazing speakers that perform without exception. I recommend that you go and listen to them for yourself at your local Guitar Center. I'll be out gigging with these as soon as the protective covers come in!

Most Impressive

Comments about Yamaha DXR12 12" Active Speaker:

Borrowed a pair of these for a gig last weekend from another band to replace some passive JBLs. Not being familiar with the Yamahas I decided to skip the serial effect rack we normally run and rely solely on the built in DSP and contour adjustments. KISS principal. The system set up in record time without most of the hassle and adjustment I normally need to balance and tune for the room. The mids were punchy and warm with even coverage throughout the room, no hot spots. Highs crisp without any harshness or hiss. The DXR12 is a compact powerhouse which balanced really well with my 18 inch sub. My next move will be to do and A/B comparison with the DXR15s but unless the difference is dramatic I will go with the DXR12s for the relatively compact size. Less gear to haul, less time to set up, less settings to tweak. Best of all the connection and mixing options on the back of each one make the Yamaha DXR series the swiss army knife of powered speakers. They sounded so good on their own that I anticpate that I will eliminate my serial components, amp and SKB rack that I need to get my other speakers to perform at the same level.

Comments about Yamaha DXR12 12" Active Speaker:

I don't own this product, but will when I have more frequent need of it. I am a gigging musician with several shows a month through most of the year. I got to use a pair of these as stage monitors, and oh my, what a difference from what we own or otherwise see at venues. Needless to say any venue that is using these as monitors has pretty great house sound, but as a vocalist, what really made the difference was the stage sound. Being able to hear myself cut through the mix with depth, bass, and clarity helped me to deliver a truly strong vocal performance. These speakers separate bands of sound so that complexity of music can be appreciated by the musician, music fan, casual, and audiophile listener. Very solid, high quality sound for the money. Costs more than its competitors, and sits far above them in terms of clarity, depth, and power at volume, as you'd hope.

Comments about Yamaha DXR12 12" Active Speaker:

Cons is they don't have the xlr combi inputs and box feels cheap.
Pros is 7 yrs warranty. Clear warm sound.

I compared it next to my bros EV EKX12, jbl prx 735, not as loud as the EV& jbl but the sound is more clearer. Not a fan of EV or JBL due to lack of clarity and white noise for the ev. Understand this comparison is for clarity only not how loud. Everyones hearing is different so go hear it for yourself.
Mostly using for karaoke so Didn't think the extra cost for the dsr/qsc was worth it.
Got the march $100 off so it was a good choice at the end.

      Great Speakers

      By Christopher

Comments about Yamaha DXR12 12" Active Speaker:

I just replaced two fairly new Mackie Thump12 speakers with the Yamaha DXR12 and they sound awesome. Over twice as expensive, but definitely worth it. Much better bass and it stays there as you go louder. I like the separate inputs on the back and use the RCA inputs for playing from an iPod or Adroid tablet. The integrated mixer gives a nice sound with good bass. I can use also use my Zed 14 mixer to fine tune the audio for karaoke or iTunes vocals/music. The way these sound, I may not need a subwoofer. Thanks Guitar Center for the great service! Ship to store is the way to go!
