Yamaha's DGX-640 was designed to be as close to a piano as a Portable Grand can be with its 88-key weighted Graded Hammer Standard keyboard action and wide selection of piano voices. Selecting a sound is as easy as keying in a number, and recording virtuoso performances is simple with the built-in recorder. The included Yamaha Education Suite and USB connectivity add full functionality.

Just as on a traditional acoustic piano, the keys of the lower notes have a heavier touch, while the higher ones are more responsive to lighter playing. The keyboard's sensitivity can even be adjusted to match your playing style. This Graded Hammer technology also enables the instrument to provide authentic touch in a lightweight instrument. The matte finish of the black keys enhances the keyboard's luxurious appearance.

Amazingly Realistic and Dynamic Sounds
Yamaha's highly acclaimed Sweet! and Cool! Voices deliver incredibly natural and very dynamic sound. Use the Pitch Bend wheel and hear these Voices”especially the Sax and Trumpet”truly come alive.

Live!, Cool! and Sweet! Voices
Live!, Cool! and Sweet! Voices gives you a huge palette of acoustic and electronically amplified instrument sounds. A blend of long, stereo and multilayered samples is used to fully capture the natural presence, resonance, expression, and vibrato of the real instrument.

Digital Signal Processor (DSP)
237 types of DSP effects can be added to the Main and Dual Voices. These range from reverb-like ambience effects to distortion and other dynamic processing tools that let you enhance the sound or completely transform it.

Easy Song Arranger
In addition to each song's default style, you can select any other style to play the song with the Easy Song Arranger feature. This means that you can play a song that is normally a ballad, for example, as a bossa nova piece or hip-hop tune, etc. You can create totally different arrangements by changing the style in which a song is played. You can also change the song's melody Voice and the keyboard Voice for a complete change of image.

Performance Assistant Technology (P.A.T.)
Play along with a song on the instrument's keyboard and produce a perfect performance every time”even if you play wrong notes. All you have to do is play on the keyboard”alternately on the left- and right-hand ranges of the keyboard, for example”and you'll sound like a pro as long as you play in time with the music.

Music Database plus External Files
You want to play music in your favorite style, but you're not sure how to select the best Voice and style for the type of music you want to play? Simply pick a style from the Music Database. The panel settings will automatically be adjusted for the ideal combination of sounds and style! Furthermore, this instrument works with Music Database files transferred from a computer or stored on a USB flash memory device. These files can be used in the same way as the internal Music Database.

The USB TO DEVICE on the instrument allows you to connect USB memory devices such as flash drives or hard drives, enabling you to save or load registrations and user songs created on the instrument, as well as read data from the connected device such as MIDI files or style files.

Dive in and take advantage of the wide world of computer music software. Connections and setup are exceptionally easy, and you can play back your computer-recorded parts with different instrument sounds”all from a single instrument.

Performance with Music Notation Display
When you play back a song, the corresponding score will be shown on the display. This is a great way to learn how to read music. If the song contains lyric and chord data, the lyrics and chords will also appear on the score display.

Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S.)
Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S.) is an advanced set of helpful learning tools built into the instrument, letting you teach yourself how to play and perform. Y.E.S. helps you master a song with easy lesson steps. Each lesson can be done in isolation with either your left hand or right hand, or both.

Amazing feel and sound quality

By Jim Crissman

from Garner, NC

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I bought the DGX-640 after trying it. I ordered it online and it arrived within 5 days and was very easy to put together. The frame for the keyboard is very sturdy and it fits well with the design. The feel of the keyboard is fantastic and the sound quality even through the on-board speakers is amazing. The soft-touch keys take some getting used to only because they are so responsive, so it's easy to blare out a key when you don't mean to. My work so far is solely based on the violin component of the keyboard, as I'm a neophyte composer. For recording quality, I've run the output through my receiver to my Klipsch RF-7's and it sounds like I'm in a concert hall. I haven't tried many of the features yet, but it's nice having the usb file port on top. It's pretty easy to download your songs in midi format to a USB flash drive. Highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about the quality of their music.

Unbelievable Value

By Garry

from Ewing, NJ

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I read all the reviews, tried it in the store, and compared it to other digital pianos. There really is nothing else like the DGX-640 in this price range. In my opinion, which is as subjective as anyone else, the feel of the keyboard is as realistic as anything else I played. Face it, acoustic pianos don't all feel the same. Neither do digital pianos. But after a certain price point, they are all pretty credible. 535 voices. The first 142 are really pretty good. Some better than others. I think the pianos, organs and woodwinds are particularly good. The brass sounds great. The string ensembles sound better than the solo strings. Synths are synths and the percussion and drum kits are fine. The next 390+ voices are XGlite samples which are an older sampling technology. Still pretty good but not AS good. This is where Yamaha throws the kitchen sink at you. Every instrument imaginable and some that have not appeared even in my darkest dreams. About 130 sound effects that you can probably live without like popcorn, fireworks, car crashes and stuff. Hundreds of effects. Reverbs, tremolos, delays, choruses, and so on. I've had this thing a week and haven't been anywhere near a lot of this stuff. It was a great idea for Yamaha to install a key pad so you can punch in the number of an instrument or effect rather that digging down through menus or scrolling through lists to find what you are looking for. Physically, it is solid as a tank when assembled. Not a toy and nothing cheap about it. I really don't understand how it was only $799. You can do some serious jamming with this thing or just have endless fun playing with it, and arranging and recording with the on board storage. I also use it as a MIDI controller with Cakewalk Sonar.

Bought one as a family Christmas present

By Ray Lawson

from Aiken, SC

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I have been in the market for a digital grand with the features of the DGX-640 for some time, but the cost has always been an issue. I saw a local music store running a sale on them so my daughter and I gave it a "test drive". We were sold. It was very easy to pick up the basics of splitting and layering, and was pretty easy to figure out how to record multiple tracks. Even my wife, who was skeptical and a fan of her traditional spinet piano, could not believe how much the keyboard felt like an acoustic piano. As a piano tuner, I look forward to having an instrument that does not need tuning! I would highly recommend it.

Best keyboard ever

By Michael

from Madison Wisconsin

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

This is the best keyboard I have had out of all the keyboards I have had it has a good price and if you live with more then yourself you can get headphones that are great and are a good price! The speakers work great and there are so many sounds programed on it. I like how you can put a flash drive into the opening to download the sounds and songs you make and put on your computer! This is the best keyboard money can buy!

yamaha dgx 640

By Doug Market

from sidney, ohio

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I have been playing for 50 plus years and if you are looking for a great digital piano at a good price, the dgx 640 is it. I have owned or played just about every piano, from keyboards to grands and everything in between. I needed something to get up into a recording studio upstairs in my home but wanted a good piano. This is it and then some. From playing like a piano, a good piano, to all of the other voices plus interfacing with my computer and mixer, the dgx 640 does it all and quite well. I was quite impressed with the instrument voices. I play several instruments and usually imitated voices irritate me but alot of these are quite good. Try one yourself.

Yamaha DGX-640

from Jackson, KY

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I bought this Yamaha DGX-640 digital piano several days ago and it's great. I'm learning something new about the piano each day. The only down side is the stand. It DOES NOT appear to be as sturdy as some reviews have stated. I will be buying a stand that does not shake as much as this one does. GB

Playing once again

By Randy Gorringe _

from Oakland CA

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I just purchased this Yamaha DGX 640 digital piano after not playing piano for about 6 years. I am 66 and have played piano since I was in teenager. I love the weighted keys of the keyboard, and am enjoying getting used to some of the great alternate sounds besides the grand piano. I did not like the standard black plastic sustain pedal that came with the piano, so I later ordered the 3-pedal panel that is now fixed to the side legs of the piano stand. The plastic pedal kept walking away from me or sometimes would flip around during playing. I am slowly getting acquainted with the various voice and style features. I accidentally hit the dual voice function and was quite surprised at the sound for the piece by Enya that I was playing. It's a great piano to play.

Best Piano for the Money

By Ariel Marlow

from Portland, OR

Comments about Yamaha DGX 640 88 Key Digital Piano:

I'm so thrilled with this piano. When I was researching different keyboards, I was looking for two main points: It needed to SOUND like a real grand piano, and FEEL like a real grand piano. This keyboard met my expectations and didn't cost a fortune to purchase.
