This is the ideal bass for beginners. With the price you cannot go wrong. However, I would advise any beginner or parent to bring along a veteran bass player and try out several models of this Yamaha bass. Sometimes korean or japanese made basses are hit or miss(Same as any other boutique bass even if it is made in the US). Once you find the perfect bass, I guarantee you will keep it for good. This yamaha bass was my first 5 string bass as I was influenced by No Doubt bassist. I have now bought 8 other basses from Fender, Warick, musicman, Tobias, Carvin. I always thought of selling my Yamaha. i always decided not to, becasue I love it so much. For the price i paid, 5X less than any of my other basses. The quality is almost similar to those expensive brands. But remember my warning, make sure you try out several bass guitars because quality varies and not very consistent. Good job Yamaha
