I wanted a 5 string "P"

Comments about Yamaha BB425X 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Really, since I've had this bass, I've not played any of my others. I wanted a 5-String "P" bass so I gave this one a shot, since it's less than 1/2 the cost of the competitor. I'm really blown away by this bass! It's got the "P" sound, and it's a 5-String, but hold on a second!! It's got a bridge pickup too!!! So, that added versatility is just icing on the cake for me. I thought I'd miss the blend pot, but I really like the pickup switch! ...and I knew that if Leland Sklar used these basses, that it would definitely sound "right"...and it does... It's a little heavy, but I'm toughing it out! Love it!

Poor quality. Paint on body was bad and many places felt like they were not sanded well.

Want a PJ? Give this bass a try!

By Aaron Fowler

from Wildomar, CA

Comments about Yamaha BB425X 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have had many basses, and this bass flat out kills. It's light, has a very comfortable neck, and the low B is one of the best that I have heard in a 34" scale 5 string. I will add that the neck moves very little, unlike the Stingray that I owned for two years that would move under every little climate change. The string spacing is around 18mm. The tone..oh the tone of the bass is so awesome. Use the neck pickup and you get a warm, full p-bass sound. Add the bridge pickup (only three positions on the switch) and you get a nice sizzle and grind. Even using just the bridge pickup has a nice full sound that I have not ever heard in a PJ bass. I really think Yamaha basses are under-rated, and wouldn't hesitate to use this bass in any scenario - be it live performances or recording.

Comments about Yamaha BB425X 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This is one of the best basses there is. That's not only my opinion, that's the opinion of a friend of mine who was in a band you have heard of. He turned me on to this bass and I couldn't believe how amazing it sounds. Now, he can play ANY bass and he chooses this one. He usually plays instruments that cost thousands more. This bass is just amazing. The tone is so versatile and complete. I can get Nathan Watts, Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Motown, J-Bass, P-bass -- just anything. The B isn't flabby. The neck even works for sweaty hands, which I don't have, but some do. I love this bass. It's not as "easy" to play as a 4-string bass. It's thick, wide and has a thick fat sound. I rank it over my Fender J-Basses or P-Basses any day. I don't find it as easy to play because I hardly use the B string, and it has a very flat fat radius. Wonderful low action. The frets grind a bit, like a J-bass, but, man, that tone. If you have big hands and need a fantastic bass, don't care that it doesn't say Fender or Warwick or Stingray, this is the bass for you. This is the bass that takes you into the highest pro territory. Now, maybe I got a good one. Play several and have it professionally set up. I set up guitars all day long but not basses. This bass is so underrated. It could easily cost 4 times as much. Absolutely best bass I've played in 35 years of being a musician.

Comments about Yamaha BB425X 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

i was looking for a bass to play in a cover band that was a little more versatile than a P-bass with a little more oomph than a J-bass. if you want a bunch of ways to dial in tone, then this is not the bass. you get 3 distinct tones with this bass.

this isn't a subtle instrument - it creates a big sound.

it is an incredibly well made instrument for the money. in this price range i can't see a better buy.

    Nice 5 String

    By jonathan harris

    from lakota nd

Comments about Yamaha BB425X 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

overall i think this is a great playing and sounding bass for the price. i may even consider getting another in a different color or a four string version.
its a passive pj bass. the only thing i wish it had was separte volume controls for the pick ups and a noiseless jazz pick up. i got the vintage white finish which is not as much of an off white or cream as it appears in the pictures.
very big sturdy bass. this thing weighs just over ten pounds so get a wide strap and you may need a strap pad aswell if you plan to play long gigs with this bass. the action can be set very low with very minimal fret buzz on the E-G strings but the low B will be a little higher. the fret board is quit flat compared to my Fender basses and i believe that contributes to the B string seeming higher than the others. the pick ups sound very nice solo'd and combined. they have a fairly agressive bite to them and have a hotter output then the fender pick ups. with a little distortion from my billy sheehan preamp this bass sounds like a chainsaw. i do wish the tone control was a little more sensitive but i can always be replaced if i really need to.
this is an amazing bass for the price and even with the few complants i have i would get another if i ever lost it or f it were ever stolen.
