I had been looking for a guitar for a bit and I did a ton of research. I am a novice player, but wanted a smaller guitar around the house that I could just p/u and play. I also wanted Acoustic-Electric in case I ever wanted to use in a larger setting. I have several friends are big time players and they own high-end Martin, Gibson, and Taylor guitars among others. I asked them about the APX500II and two of them stopped by the local music store to check it out. Both were very impressed with the quality, the action and the sound of this guitar. They both said for the price I could not go wrong. The 3rd guy has now played my APX500II and he said he is going to get one just to have around. All of these guys are in their late 40s/ early 50s and have been playing their whole lives. I am very impressed with how easy this guitar is to play and the great sound and the thin-line body. Working with GuitarCenter was great; I was able to get the color I wanted in 3 days! Arrived in pristine shape. Play one...you'll see you cannot miss with this Yamaha APX500II guitar.

I purchased this guitar and absolutely love sound both acoustically and through amplification. However, if you take a mirror (mechanics mirror) and stick it into the sound hole to see under the bridge, you'll notice the wood under the bridge is damaged under the 'D' string. The damage is substantial. I took my guitar back to guitar center and we opened 2 more in the box and looked at the display model. All have the same damage. I can only assume it's a defect from the factory. I hope Yamaha fixes this soon. This type of damage can certainly shorten the life of your guitar if the string starts pulling through the bridge plate.

Yamaha APX 500 II

By John Clifton

from Gray, TN

I'm just starting to play again after several years away from it. I was at a benefit auction and they had a black one with a custom paint job on it. I won the auction and started playing again. This guitar is fantastic in both feel and sound.

Perfect beginner/intermediate guitar!

By Jeffrey Hendrickson

from Portland Oregon

This guitar is awesome! I got it in the old violin sunburst color way, which is just beautiful. The guitar has a nice easy to play low action, and has a very fast neck to play. It really is a guitar acoustic electric balanced sort of feel. The guitar has great mid to highs, slightly lacking in the lows, but not much! It also isn't the loudest guitar, but for the size it really can play quite loud. This guitar is fun to play acoustically, but just amazing to play plugged in. Yamaha really made a solid guitar with the APX 500ii. Also the built in turner is spot on, and very convenient. All in all this guitar would be a great starter guitar for anyone looking for a simple yet nice guitar to start on.

Sounds great

By Siavash Heydari

Bought this guitar for my daughter and she loves it the only thing by looking at the picture and the descriptions on the web page, we all thought that it would be blue, which she really wanted but it is very green. Not a big deal she still loves it.

It's a winner...with a little work.

By Chris Laird

from Marion, Ohio

The particular model (color) that I bought was the dark red burst, which probably would not have been my first choice since my other traditional acoustic is almost the exact same color. However, this was a "factory restock" item that I got at a great discount, 20% off, I believe. I did a lot of research on this guitar before buying it and it was my understanding that this guitar would be "ready to go" right out of the box. Not quite true. The action was way too high and upon further inspection, I found that there were NO shims under the bridge saddle to remove in order to lower the strings. So, I removed the saddle and carefully sanded it down, in increments, to lower the action. That has worked very well although the next time I change strings, I may sand it down a little more. Also, I had to adjust the truss rod a little and it may need a little more tweaking still. Overall, since my adjustments, it's playing very well. It sounds OK by itself, but plug it into an amp and it sounds BEAUTIFUL! The on-board controls work great and the built-in tuner is awesome and very handy.

AMAZING!!!

By Jason Echols

from Va

I was looking for my first acoustic electric guitar and wanted that was easy to play and sounded good. After picking this one up, I was hooked and didn't want to set it down. I even preferred this over a $1500 Martin. This would be a perfect guitar for beginners, especially for beginners because of the built on tuner if you don't know how to tune it and good for an experienced guitarist.

SWEET!

By David Gorny

I believe the APX is one of the best deals available right now. The guitar is light weight and super easy to play. You won't find a better guitar in this price range. I can't find anything negative to say about it.

Not for everyone but still a 5 *****

By Eric Zasadil

from Sacramento, CA

I owned one of these for a short while (needed a new electric more and I'd rather upgrade to the APX700ii if I get another one) and I just gave a used one a thorough going over for a friend of me. I LOVE this guitar. I've heard it called boxy sounding and in a way it is, but I would call it focused, or as having a strong midrange projection. If you are looking for a big open acoustic sound this is not the guitar for you. It has it's own unique unplugged sound and as you can see from the other reviews many people like that sound. Over a weekend I played every $500 or less electric-acoustic that I could find at two Guitar Centers. This was the only one I liked the sound of it unplugged and plugged. In going over this guitar the setup was pretty good for a guitar at this price point.Based on the few that I have played they are very playable as they come. It feels solid like it could take the abuse of gigging. With its focused sound I think it makes a great guitar for an electric player who wants an electric-acoustic. Personally I love the size and shape of this guitar. If you like the sound of the APX series than this makes an incredible value in a guitar.

Can't believe how good this guitar is for the $$

By George Baia

from Towson, MD

I spent hours and hours over several days at my local Guitar Center trying out different AE guitars. I was prepared to pay around $600 and tested many guitars in that price range. However, I kept going back to this guitar because it not only sounded fantastic, it felt great to me and the fit/finish was as good as any guitar in this price range even though it was half the price. The action was set-up perfectly on the low side, which I like. The neck feels great, just a very playable guitar to me. Plugged into my Bugera 6262 amp, it sounds full, bright and deep. I am beyond satisfied with this guitar.
