Comments about Yamaha 3/4 Scale Folk Guitar:

I bought this as a gift for a friend who is a short adult with some reach problems with her full size guitar. I gave her a lesson a while back and she just couldn't comfortably reach everything, so I wanted to get her a 3/4 size guitar she can use as a practice/learning guitar, and as a second travel guitar. I'm hoping she'll take to this and enjoy it.

I shopped a long time and looked at most commonly available 3/4 size guitars. Martin and Taylor make several 3/4 size models which are clearly superior to this, but cost 2-4 times as much.

The Luna 3/4 model and this were my top 2 for the $. Both were tied in most respects, with a few pros and cons for each.

One thing that swung me was the gig bag. Luna's bag is not padded, and this Yamaha JR-2 is. I don't recommend ever using a non-padded gig bag. A friend with an unpadded gig bag broke one of his tuners at the top of the headstock from banging it. That was a pain to deal with. It's almost impossible to move a guitar around without bumping into something eventually, and 3rd/4th string tuner is the very vulnerable. Don't try to save a $20 bill or two by going cheap on the bag. If you buy a guitar without a hard case or padded gig bag, shell out the money for a padded one. This Yamaha JR-2 gig bag isn't fanstastic, but it's probably good enough.

I played this and the Luna for several hours. Both would make excellent guitars for smaller hands/arms, unless you want to spend more, in which case you couldn't go wrong buying one of the small Taylors or Martins, etc. if you're OK spending $400-$600.

Consider always capoing at 1st or 2nd fret. Intonation/tuning seems more accurate that way, and it's a little easier to play. If you tune down so that capoing that way gives you normal pitch, you might need to change from the light gauge strings it comes with to mediums, then adjust neck to keep action the same.

Excellent small guitar, good value. I greatly prefer the look of the natural finish over the sunburst. YMMV

        • Front Seat Guitar Playing

Comments about Yamaha 3/4 Scale Folk Guitar:

I am really new to guitar playing. About 6 weeks. I find as a mom, that the times I have alone are often sitting in a parking lot in the front seat of my car waiting on a teenager to be done with some sort of practice, or social affair. Looking to get as much practice time as I can with my new instrument ( I play some others but never anything with strings.) I decided to find a travel guitar. Besides front seat playing we do travel often, sometimes as a family, and sometimes just me with the teenager who is often at some kind of sports practice and I am in a hotel... anyway this is the perfect guitar for my needs. It's really small. Which is what I wanted. I went to Guitar Center and looked at the travel guitars. They didn't really have many in stock, and though I liked the Baby Taylor (BT1), it was a little bigger and I thought I would save the extra money to put towards a real, main guitar. The Yamaha JR2.. or 3/4 size Folk fit my needs perfectly. The action is great. The neck width not too small.. actually think it's the same as my big Dreadnaught. I was toying between the JR1 and the JR2, but the salesman at GC said the bag is worth the extra few dollars. At the store they only had the tobacco finish which I really wasn't a fan of, so went home and ordered the natural on line. I would have to agree with the salesman. The gig bag that comes with the JR2 is fantastic. Great shoulder straps (backpack), good padding, pockets, and really smart looking too (It's milk chocolate brown, sometimes hard to see in pictures). Plenty of room for a couple books, my capo, tuner and extra picks with room to spare... even my keys, phone and wallet. If you want a comfy little traveler, that sounds good for it's small size (sound wasn't my utmost priority), is comfortable to play, set up perfectly with good action right out of the box, I highly recommend the Yamaha JR2 (3/4 Scale Folk).
