I bought this Cranberry Red all-birch 14 x 5.5 snare drum to complete my Be Bop kit which I purchased in order to have a compact "easy" set for casuals and one-niters. This drum adds another "voice" to my collection of snare drums which include a vintage 1962 14 x 5 Ludwig Supraphonic C.O.B and a couple of custom brass Keplinger snares (one a 13 x 3 piccolo). This beautiful Stage Custom Yamaha is priced in the intermediate drum level and yet it holds its own among the heavyweights in my arsenal. The shell is beautifully in round with excellent bevels that make for quick and easy tuning. The strainer is a no-nonsense simple-to-use device that somewhat reminds me of the Ludwig P85 strainers...the kind that will last a lifetime. The lugs and hoops are standard built with the high quality typical of all Yamaha percussion products. I always replace the original heads on all my drums and save them so that they can be returned to original condition any time I choose....the head combination that seems to work well for me on this drum is; Remo Ambassador "hazy" snare side and an Aquarian coated Studio X. I venture to say though that just about any combination you chose will work well with this drum. It's a "no bells & whistles" simple to use snare drum and not a "finicky" instrument in any way...and again as mentioned tunes up very quickly and easily. This snare has a quick response with that warm punchy attack sound that good birch shells provide. It gives you the best of both worlds. If you need a lighter touch this drum is perfect...but if more volume is what you need this drum can really cut! The sound response and quality of build completely defy it's pricing level....don't be fooled into thinking this is some student level drum - it's not! I would happily take this to any gig or recording session.
Do not let the low price fool you. The 12 X 5 is amazing ! I play in a metal band and the snare cuts through just fine.It sounds incredible tuned high. You will need to change the stock heads as soon as possible. Also,if you do a great deal of rim shots, get ready for some detuning to happen. Lug locks have worked fine. If you want a snare with bite, and don't want to spend a lot of cash, this product is for you !
've owned my 10x5 stage custom snare for 8 years, so it isn't even solid birch like the current ones are. I can't say enough about this drum. The tone is incredible. The snares are snappy and sensitive. It cuts through live music beautifully but sounds great in the studio as well. It even sounds cool with the snares turned off. I've played with different head combinations from Remo, Aquarian and Evans, and it sounds great regardless. I've added enhancements like a Russ Miller groove wedge and 16 strand Pure Sound bronze wires, and the drum sounds incredible with or without. The new all-birch drums sound even better due to the increased bottom-end, and for the price it is accessible to anyone.
