First and foremost, I wanted to get this review in because this is a fairly old keyboard, from 2007. It comes with PC drivers, but not Mac drivers. If you go to Yamaha's web site and look for drivers for this instrument, you will get Mac drivers that only work on older, pre-Intel PowerPC Macs. However, if you just look for Yamaha's general USB drivers, you'll get Mac drivers that WILL WORK on the latest Macs, so yes, you can use this keyboard on your brand-new iMac, MacBook, etc. on GarageBand et al; I've done it.
And really, this is a great unit. If you like assembling IKEA furniture, the included stand is a DIY-put-together job, so I was thrilled. :) Sustain pedal is included, which is great -- because I could never understand people who have keyboards without 'em -- but the pedal itself is kind of lame, one of those flat plastic thingies; I actually invested $15 in another real piano-style sustain pedal that works even better.
The sounds are great, and the library of voices included is obscenely huge. So many possibilities!
Beware, though, if you buy this brand-new -- you will be taking apart a buttload of cardboard! Took me three trips to bring it all outside for recycling!
This is a wonderful piano with the graded hammer action. My son says it feels more like playing a piano than a keyboard and that is what we wanted. This piano sounds wonderful and it is a very good quality. You will not find a better deal. I am also very impressed with the customer service and the website. I got very very fast shipping.
I've been working with this keyboard for a few months now. I use it for gigs and rely heavily on the midi file capability it offers to provide a full band sound I need for my performances. Strongely recommend for home or gig use. I have loaded hundreds of files onto a thumb drive and simply plug and play. The LCD screen is bright and readable in most any lighting conditions. As you might expect, the piano sounds are superb and I prefer the grand piano sound for most of my work. In addition, I'm a fan of the growl sax and "Roto Organ" which offers a classic Hammond B3 sound that is remarkable. For an 88 key instrument it is light and easy to transport. My only worry came from a freak issue with the LCD screen when it inexplicably malfunctioned after a few uses. However, Guitar Center was quick to recitify the situation with a replacement unit and all is well. I've since talked with a technician and have been assured that is was a very rare occurance. That said, I will be overly cautious about exposing the unit to extreme temperatures. Bottom line: Great sound and a great value!
