100% maple equals power and tone.

This Yamaha Tour Custom Tom Drum features a 6-ply maple shell with 60-degree bearing edges that provides clear fundamental tones, delivering warm resonant sustain and clear low-frequency impact, with a wide tuning range. Air Seal SystemAll Yamaha wood drums have one thing in common. Yamaha's craftsmen create every drum shell using their exclusive staggered diagonal seam Air Seal System just as they have since 1967. Each two or three-ply master ply is cut to length to very precise tolerances with a diagonal cut on each end. The diagonal seam in the drum shell will not separate, eliminating the need to fill gaps in the bearing edge with filler putty. These plies have glue applied and are then put into the mold by hand, one master ply at a time. The craftsman then inserts an air bag into the mold and inflates it, clamping the shell with even pressure 360 degrees around. This process creates a shell that is strong, starts round, and stays round for many years.60 Degree Bearing EdgesTour Custom drums, including this tom, have 60-degree R2 bearing edges. This bearing edge has a rounder profile so that there is more shell to head contact. This gives the drums clarity in the low-end fundamental and added warmth.YESS Tom BracketsTour Custom toms use the YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System). The toms have a mount attached to the shell at the nodal point by two bolts. This system allows the drum shell to vibrate freely for maximum sustain without restricting with where the placement of the drums.

As reviewed by Carey P. Gumaer on 7/2/2010

I got my tour custom kit for 550 used at Guitar Center after a 15% off coupon for a one weekend only sale. It came in a fusion configuration (10-12-16 inch toms) and my previous kit was a Ludwig Accent in the standard (12-13-16) configuation. My kit is dark blue, and they don't offer the 13 inch tom in dark blue, so I bought the natural wood color because I figured it would blend into anything, and I was right. It looks very nice with the dark blue, and I would imagine that it would look great with just about any other color. As far as sound goes, the Tour Custom toms in general are very deep sounding drums. The sound has a lot of body and low end to it that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. People will say that the wood used in these drums is softer Asian maple and it doesn't sound as good as rigid North American maple, but I disagree. I've played very expensive DW maple kits, and this kit definitely measures up. Some people will also say that maple doesn't record well, and I say they're not using the right microphones. I record this kit using SM57's, and boundary condenser mic for the kick and eventually I'm going to get a Rode NT1000 for overhead and it sounds beautiful. In my opinion, there really aren't any better drums for the price you pay for these.

  • Very Good

As reviewed by Cameron on 5/14/2010

These tom's sound wonderful. The maple creates very warm tones, and the low end is definitely notable. I played this tom with a coated emperor batter and a clear ambassador resonant. I would recommend this in a hearbeat. The only reason I did not give it five stars was because I couldn't justify buying a tour custom kit over a stage custom kit which is cheaper and sounds the same, as I have owned both. Heads and tuning will really effect the sound.
