      Yamaha TRBX504 4-String Premium Electric Bass (J01918)

Sweet intermediate bass.

From the tip of the headstock to the bottom strap button, the Yamaha TRBX504 bass is a great value, but more than that, it's a great instrument. Equipped with all of the features a committed student needs in order to advance on his or her instrument, the TRBX504 sounds and plays great, and offers a variety of sounds that are appropriate to a variety of playing styles.

TRBX features a sculpted solid mahogany body, with a mass-optimized 3D design for the optimum balance between tone and comfort coupled with perfect weight distribution.

TRBX’s neck design combines a fast, ultra-comfortable profile with 5-pc maple/mahogany laminated construction for outstanding stability and excellent tone.

YGD designed H5 pickups are defined by a clean, open tone that’s perfectly matched with the flexibility of the active/passive preamp design. Their quad-polepiece design and alnico magnets give them the power to drive the active circuit and the sensitivity and subtlety to capture every nuance in passive mode.

TRBX500 models feature an audiophile-grade active/passive circuit for fine tonal control and extreme flexibility. The advanced design offers a level-matched output whether in passive or active mode and tone-switching circuitry that seamlessly moves from treble control to master passive tone. High-quality gold plated parts are used for key signal chain contacts, providing increased conductivity and reliability and a battery alert LED installed on the back panel gives instant indication of low power to eliminate sudden power loss during performance.

Neck Joint
TRBX uses a precision fitted bolt-on neck joint for maximum adjustability and clear, punchy tone. Developed through hundreds of hours of play-testing, the refined neck joint shape perfectly balances strength, vibration transfer and upper-fret access.

A high-mass die-cast bridge efficiently transfers string vibrations to the body for full, rich tone combined with excellent adjustability and road-tested durability. 19mm string spacing on the 4-string model offers outstanding playability for technical slap or finger styles.

Straight string pull from nut to machine head eliminates lateral tension, providing superior tuning stability and reducing overtones.

38mm (4-string) nut widths give fast, comfortable playability for any style.

Output Jack
Yamaha’s metal plate-mounted standard jack socket offers superior durability and easy maintenance.

  • A Bass with a Unique Voice

As reviewed by William Whitmill on 12/15/2013

Let me start out by saying that I'm being realistic about this instrument considering the cost, look, and performance. First the good: I really love the five piece neck. It has a lovely curvature to it that is a bit different from most other basses I own. It's quite flat on the back, and very thin from the finger board to the back of the neck. The woods that the neck of my sample are constructed of are of premium quality. They really are flawless, and that's how they get away with the next point. One of the other things that I like about this unusual instrument, and something that others may consider a short coming, is the unfinished neck. It has simply been sanded to a smooth finish. It's quite organic feeling, and something unexpected. It really brings something different to playing the instrument. I got the transparent black color. They should really just call this "black" as you really can't see the wood grain. That's fine, I don't really mind, because the matched black chrome hardware is fantastic. It really looks classy. The bridge is a "bent metal" style, but with quite a lot more metal. I'd actually say it's probably cast in that shape. It does its job. This bass is the most percussive (punchy) bass of the six that I own, and the pre-amp has the head room to bring it out even more. this bass really has its own unique voice. It's got a lot of mid emphasis, and also captures a lot of the overtones. This gives you a lot of options, but I don't think it would play nicely with dropped tunings. The pre-amp is volume matched to the output of the passive circuit. And both the active and passive modes really do give you some nice tones. Over all, I really like the voice/tone of the instrument, and this is what convinced me to keep it. I'll include the usual platitude about how the knobs all feel nice, and the switch doesn't feel cheap, and the tuners are adequate. It has an LED to indicate when the 9v battery is going dead. I guess that's nice. Now the bad: Finish is terrible. The hole to access the truss rod is where the base of the neck meets the body. This pretty common on new basses. The hole in the body has a plastic insert, but the hole in the base of the neck is unfinished and splintered. This is visible from a few feet away. I'll be using a razor knife to clean up the hole. Not the end of the world, but for an instrument in this price class, you'd expect a little more finishing work to be done. The body looks like it was the product of a high school shop class project. Many of the curves that you'd expect to be nicely rounded appear to have been sanded, but still have flat spots. The strings that came on the instrument were bad. I realized they were bad when attempting to set the intonation on my new bass. The E string simply would not play ball. Again, not the end of the world, as I prefer DR Hi-Beams anyway, but this is one more strike against it. Buzzing on the E string above the 12th fret. Again, not really a deal-breaker. Initially I was experiencing some buzzing on both the E and A strings. I was able to adjust it out of the A string, and reduce it on the E string by raising the action a little. This is not a huge problem, because I don't play above the 12th fret very often. I haven't taken the time to really sit down and see if it's a fret leveling issue, or whether I need to adjust the neck relief and action a bit more. Either way, this is something that can easily be dealt with, but you're starting to stack more and more against a bass that isn't a "starter bass". Conclusion: If you can overlook the finishing issues, then the Yamaha TRBX504 is actually a lovely instrument to play. It's got a unique voice, quality electronics, and a neck that's worth the price of entry. I gave it three stars, because I expect a little more quality finishing in this price range. Hopefully Yamaha can work this out, because I REALLY REALLY do like the voice and feel of this instrument.
