Excellent Cafe PA

I purchased the Yamaha Stagepas 300 Portable PA System because I needed a "Caf? PA" for small gigs. For small to medium sized rooms I had been using a Mackie 808M with a pair of JBL JRX115 cabinets but that setup was overkill for gigs like coffee shops and bookstores. Not only is that stuff heavy to lug around but it scares owners of small venues. To save my back and not scare caf? owners I wanted a smaller setup. I have used a Fender Passport P-250 system belonging to a friend and really liked it but I was hoping for something smaller. I checked the Kustom Profile One and Profile Two and B-52 Matrix 200 and both are good but the Stagepas 300 won out. It is the smallest of the lot and has excellent sound and is most portable of all. It's not perfect (see below) but it's small and sounds surprisingly good. The first thing you notice is that, unlike comparable PA's, there are only two pieces. The mixer locks into a slot behind one of the speakers, which are smaller than the Fender, Kustom, or B-52 speakers. The mixer is tiny, about the size of two stacked hardback books, but it has four channels with mic (XLR) and line inputs, a stereo channel with two ?" line inputs and RCA inputs, and a stereo channel with two RCA inputs. The four XLR channels have mic/line and reverb switches and all channels have high and low EQ knobs. There is a master volume and speech/music EQ switch. There are two powered ?" output jacks for the system speakers and two unpowered ?" outputs for monitors with a separate monitor volume control. Set up was easy. It took more time to get both speakers out of the box than to set everything up. The sound has surprisingly good bass for such a small package. I set up two mics, one vocal and one condenser for guitar, and got a decent sound immediately. A little tweaking and the sound & volume is perfect for small rooms. I was able to get a natural guitar sound with the mic and come pretty close using another guitar with a piezo bridge pickup (though I still prefer a pre-amp with EQ). Take down was just as easy. The mixer goes back into one of the speakers. The other speaker has a compartment that easily held the speaker & power cables and an XLR cable. The Stagepas 300 has a lot of pros but now the cons: the built-in reverb is a joke. It's more of a dripping slapback. Why Yamaha bothered to include such a useless reverb is a mystery. You could route one of the monitor outs through a stand-alone reverb and run it back into an input channel but the point of a caf? PA is simplicity & size. A simple digital spring-style reverb would have been perfect. My other gripe is that the speakers lack built-in stand mounts. Yamaha sells inexpensive mounts that attach via screws but with the mounts installed the speakers cannot be stood on end. With the stands mounted you must use speaker stands or lay the speakers sideways. (Or bring a screwdriver to install & remove the stands.) Since you can't depend on the venue having a place to set the speakers at the right height you're stuck dealing with external stand mounts. Finally, the guy at the store told me that the Stagepas 300 came with a case like the Kustom and B-52 but that isn't true. Yamaha sells one but it's a $100 accessory. The speakers have built-in handles on top that make them easy to carry but it would be nice to roll everything in with one trip. I'm thinking I might be able to find a rolling suitcase at a discount store that would work. If you want a small, good sounding caf? PA and don't need reverb or integral speaker stand mounts the Yamaha Stagepas 300 is a great deal. It isn't likely to get the vocals over a metal band but for small rooms at low volume it's great for live and DJ gigs.

super loud!!!

This package was perfect for my needs. I practice with a 4 piece band and my drummer plays really hard. I needed something simple for my vocals to cut past the kit. This setup was perfect. Not too many features to confuse things, and plenty loud. This package is all you'll need.

Great practice PA

This is a great little practice system. I am a very loud drummer and I needed an inexpensive system to practice along with and this system is more than I expected. Loud, crisp, clean sound with a great versatility that just can't be beat for the price. Keep in mind this system should not be considered as a gig PA for rock bands. Church functions, cafe gigs, practice, or even a killer home system would describe this system.

Excellent for Solo or Duet Performers

This is great for a solo or duet performer(s). It's very loud inside my house. I haven't used it outside yet. I used it with my cousin's children at Christmas, where we had one keyboard, one guitar, and three mics setup. The quality is great... it's a Yamaha! My only beef is that it doesn't have any effects. Reverb would have made this perfect. The whole idea is to have everything in one package. I bought the bag too and it works for easy storage and transporting (it has wheels).
