I've been playing drums for 35+years. I've played many different kits and for some reason, these drums feel right and sound great. I have a Ludwig Black Beauty snare to go with the kit and they sound great for jazz as well as rock. I put Remo pinstripes on the toms and left the stock head on the bass drum. They ring just enough and the bass drum kicks! I owned a top of the line Pearl maple kit and these drums sound as good if not better. I own the sunburst version and got them for $547. They are great drums and reasonably priced.
This drum kit is totally awesome! The sound is just amazingly deep and warm. The floor tom probably has the most powerful low type sound I have ever heard. The bass drum is also amazing, and the mounted tom is also amazing in its sound if you tune it right. The only con I have noticed is that the finish is not very strong. I already have a few marks in my bass drum which I am not happy about, and I am not sure where they are coming from. I have been treating the drums very carefully. However, this will not stop me from expanding on the rock tour kit, which I will. I also, I thought it was cool to be able to buy a kit without being forced to have a yamaha snare. I use a pork pie snare.
Perfect for a second drum set. If you like rock or punk this is perfect for you. The nice reliable, steady, warm tone gives you so many more options on the drum set. Yamaha is now giving you the buyer the freedom to pick any snare you want.
