Take it from an owner of the Motif ES Workstation. I love my ES but just had to get the new sounds and the new FX, so I got the Rack XS. I was not disappointed. The new FX are awesome. The reverb is a big improvement from the ES. The sound of this engine is a little more robust. Patches from the ES sound better or different in a more positive way in the Rack XS. The strings and pads are plentiful and spot on. There seems to be more of a variety of all sounds on board with maybe one exception.........the pianos. Not a big variety of those but the ones they have are very good. You have your Grand piano that will cut through anything and a Mellow version for more intimate jazzy sets.
The layout of the interface is an improvement especially if you use the rack for live purposes. You don't get detailed editing from the front panel, but you get just the right parameters to tweak here and there to make the sounds your own. The knobs are perfect for that. But these sounds are so good, I doubt you will need to do any deep editing for your bread and butter sounds.
If there is something negative about the Rack XS is there is no room for expansion. No plugs. No sampler. But I can't think of anything you would need that you couldn't get with what's already onboard. The sounds are just that good to me.
Another positive is the firewire expansion card to track 16 channels of midi to your DAW of choice. Bottom line -- these sounds will be popular for a very long time.
IF you haven't yet played the motif, you are missing out! The quality of the sounds are really a step up from a lot of other keyboards out there. What make this worth while is the deep editing that can be done on any sound/effects/routing and Intricate Midi mixing. The MLAN board is a must if you want pristine audio quality doing both Midi and audio in one firewire cord!!! This is a MUST have for beginners to Pro's. Works great with all the latest Midi control boards out there with no problem!!!
What a riot, to have so many usable sounds in one dependable black box, that fits nicely in my rack with my other older synth rack toys. It was never with the idea that I was replacing the older rack modules that I bout the XS, but rather to have more flexibility, particularly with acoustic piano sounds (Which are fantastic BTW). What fun though to have some rock guitar sounds to riff with my guitar buddies, great organ w/Leslie rotor adjustable. I already have two great MIDI mother keyboards and didn't need another one. To have the MOTIF in a rack mountable form is the best of both worlds. Way to go Yam'!!!!
