Like the previous reviewer said this bass is very good feels light and plays really great. I've owned this bass and also own a Fender Rumble 15 watter for going on 3 years that allows me to get the most from the bass in any setting or studio situation (I home record). I think this bass is great for any metal tunings or punk players (like me who play with a pick exclusively) who just want to play bass and it sound good rather than tune it. The reason I say that is cause it plays great in DADG and can hold tune for a LONG time. (I play it up too fourty hours a week and only tune it twice) I am a Yamaha fan for life and am prepared to take this bass too my grave. And I think you should too just try it out and you'll see why lots of great bassists rely on Yamaha.
I've been playing this bass for about a year and a half now, and I can say I've never been disappointed. The sound quality is excellent but the amp that it comes with puts out a bit too much treble for my tastes. I would suggest a Fender Rumbler (whatever number) for an amp, because it compliments the bass. I typically play Metal or rock on this bass and the fretboard is perfect for beginner to advanced players.
Well I bought this bass without the combo and without active electronics... and its kind of good... but man... the frets don't stop making noieses... the first two frets no matter how hard you try to ignore it it just suck... but the bass is pretty cool for starting. I have 1 year and a half with this bass... I would recomend to take that money and buy a dean bass and try saving for another amp cause that one really stinks..
