Yamaha FG720S

I has been playing a Yamaha electric and decided to try one one their acoustic guitars. After doing alot of research and trying several different models I settled on this one. the FG720S has a rich deep sound and marvelous sustain. I found the strings a bit stiff but that's something I'm sure to get used to. One other thing, the finish is a bit delicate so you want to be careful not to bump it. Great price, value. Playabillity excellent.

Way more than a beater!

I was looking for a guitar to take to festivals and jams, etc. I was prepared to sacrifice a lot of performance and tone to get something that was cheap and that I would not worry about too much. To get to the point--this guitar is far beyond my expectations. Big sound, nice bass, not boxy sounding, some power in the trebles, and it actually has some tone (not a Martin by any means, but it might make folks do a double take...what guitar are you pickin?). I don't know much about these cheaper Yamahas, but if this is an example of what they do, I am impressed. This is good enough to be your only guitar. I am serious about that.

This one will surprise you...

Not so long ago, when looking to purchase an acoustic guitar that was instrument quality rather than a toy for under $300 was little more than a punch line to a very bad joke. Times have changed a bit. Now a playable acoustic can be had in that range... But the FG series raised the bar on affordable, playable guitars in this price range. The sustain is near piano in proportion, but volume is not overly sacrificed in the inevitable trade off. The lows remain rich and vibrant, but do not overwhelm mid and high frequencies. Very well balanced. Yes, you can fingerpick without muddiness at the same time as a country bass line will deliver in thick, full force. THAT is impressive in an $800 guitar. Jaw dropping in a sub $300. Yamaha was not goofing off when they designed their bracing. The fittings are well done, no excess glue, gaps or shoddy workmanship, frets very well fit and polished. Thin finish, but the upside is the top should open up faster and sound better. The action is low- great for all you fancy fingerwork fans, but a heavy, aggressive bluegrass strummer may find it necessary to raise the action or risk buzzing. For the average player however, you will find it nothing short of perfection. Don't let the student model prices cause you doubt. This is a very real instrument, literally usable as a main with no reservation. Jaded as I am, it is tough to get praise out of me, but Yamaha certainly earned it with this one.
