A Martin nylon-string plunker for forty years, with bad experiences attempting to play a steel 12-string with high action and narrow nut, the Yamaha FG720S was a vastly pleasant surprise on ease of playing and roomy finger space. Granted that learning to pick and finger twelve strings instead of six was a challenging learning curve, but the beauty of the loud clear sound compensated for the extra effort. All that and the price was so low it's hard to believe that such a value is possible.
I've been playing 12-string guitar since 1975. Over the years, I've owned six different 12-string guitars and played over 2 dozen others, from high priced Martins and Guilds to intermediate range priced guitars from Alvarez and Ovation, to student-priced models from, Alvarez, Applause, Conn, Dean, Epiphone, Fender, Ibanez, Samick, Vantage, Walden, and Washburn. I purchased this one about four months ago. The neck is not as wide as some, making it easier to chord, but still the string spacing is sufficient to make it easy to flatpick. The construction and factory setup are superb. There are no loose braces or kerfing on the inside. There were no sloppy glue joins either. I found no loose fret wires and the fret wires were nicely dressed so there were no burrs or rough ends. The only drawback I find in the construction is that it lacks a strap button on the heel. Although the cosmetics are rather ordinary--no abalone inlay in the rosette or purfling--this has what counts and that is outstanding sound. The lower bout is 16.25"--about 1.25" wider than most dreadnoughts, which makes this closer in size to a jumbo guitar (like the Guild F-512). The larger body size gives it some extra bass without the guitar sounding muddy. At the same time, it maintains the chimey-ness associated with a 12-string. Granted, this does not sound like a Guild F-512, but it does have a full, satisfying sound that is at home doing "Rocky Mountain High" around a campfire, or performing originals at an open mic night.
Always wanted to have a 12string guitar to play some "Travis" (FranHealy) stuff, some Russian stuff (AlexandrRozenbaum) and, of course, how can we miss it, "Wish you were here". Then, despite of money issue, I went of the hook, made a decision right on the spot and bought this Yamaha FG720S-12. There are many very nice Y. guitars that are not expensive (comparatively) but sounding very good and they are very durable. Roughly saying the sound is between Taylor and Alvarez). Personally, I like the well-rounded neck, just very comfy. Yes, there are other good 12string models like Seagull (don't like much personally the feeling and looks of their 6 strings, but the sound is nice, deep and juicy),Epiphone, Fender,...Know nothing about Ibanez somehow. But knowing Yamaha reputation and having Yamaha FGX720SCA at home (amongst others...a small nice 'company'), I know that this guitar will keep in tune, the natural brightness of Yamaha just fits the 12 string version, it is comfortable, it looks just beautiful and, yes, the price is good enough for the thing. Very often one doesn't have to go too far (pricewise)to make a nice music and Yamaha gives us a good choice . When I play this one, I feel it with my guts and heart, physically. That's a good sign. After all - it's how and what you play. And this model would be good, i guess, for anyone, ..unless one is picky and interested more in brand or price than in music itself.
