Yamaha DGX-650 88-Key Graded Hammer Action Digital Piano (H99563)
Availability:

Classic piano touch. Contemporary music experience.

Yamaha is one of the leaders in digital piano production, and they continue that tradition with the DGX-650. A true ensemble digital piano, the DGX-650 has a variety of interactive features that make learning, playing, and sharing music fun for everyone regardless of skill level. With a full-size 88-note Graded Hammer Standard action keyboard, the DGX-650 not only gives you the authentic feel of playing a piano, it also incorporates Damper Resonance DSP and PureCF sampling that gives this digital version true and accurate sound reproduction of its acoustic counterpart. Add-in a USB audio recorder to instantly capture and share your musical achievements, and the DGX-650 is even better than the real thing.

PureCF-sampled piano
PureCF sampling starts with a meticulous recording of Yamaha's acclaimed CFIIIS 9' concert grand piano. This recording contains a number of dynamic levels from pianissimo to fortissimo, so you can experience the delicate touch of a soft passage or the pure power of two-handed chords.

Damper Resonance DSP
Damper Resonance digitally reproduces the sympathetic interaction between strings on acoustic pianos. When the damper pedal is used in a performance, the harmonics of other strings wash over the notes you play until the pedal is released.

88-note, weighted GHS action
A weighted action with heavier touch in the low end and lighter touch in the high end, just like the hammers inside an acoustic piano. Great for the aspiring pianist, practicing on the GHS action builds the proper finger technique for when the time comes to perform on an acoustic piano.

XG-optimized for You Are The Artist song books
Professionally-arranged, play-along XG song files from Yamaha MusicSoft are matched with best-selling song books from Hal Leonard. Learn to play songs made famous by artists like Elton John, Coldplay, Adele and more with the DGX-650 as your backing band.

USB Audio (WAV) Recording/Playback
Record performances or MIDI songs as uncompressed, CD-quality audio to a USB flash drive using the USB Audio Recorder. From there, copy to your computer to make CDs, share over the internet or transfer to your portable music player. You can also playback uncompressed WAV files stored on a USB flash drive.

Smart Chord
Smart Chord makes you sound like a pro, even if you're just learning how to play. With a single finger on your left hand, Smart Chord will create entire chords from simple Pop triads to complex jazz 7th and 9th chords. Accompaniment Styles create the rest of your virtual band so you can get straight to playing music.

Style Recommender
Style Recommender suggests a list of suitable Styles based on your playing. Play in a piano part, drum part or just tap a simple rhythm and Style Recommender will create a list of appropriate Styles based on what you played.

AUX line input
Connect any device with an audio output and hear it through the DGX-650's built-in speakers. Listen to music from your mobile device, hook up another keyboard or even a mixer and jam with friends. The DGX-650 makes a great speaker system for virtually any sound source.

128-note polyphony
Provides enough horsepower for dropout-free performances even while layering two Voices and playing two-handed, sustained chords with heavy pedaling. So as you become a more advanced player, your digital piano can respond to your skill level.

  • Best Bang for the Buck

As reviewed by Ted Hougan on 8/30/2013

This is an amazing instrument! The Grand piano is better sounding than on many I have played in the $2000 and up range. The new smart chord feature is really cool allowing you to choose what key your playing in and genre of music adjusting to your playing automatically. This keyboard looks like it should cost a lot more. It comes with a nice wooden stand "really easy to put together", a power supply and sustain pedal, Oh ya and 88 graded hammer action keys "this plays like a real piano". Lots of great voices excellent Yamaha quality in all. Play MP3 direct or USB data and be a one man band. This is perfect for beginners and will still satisfy veteran musicians. Yamaha you Rock! and Thank you Guitar Center for always going above and beyond in customer service.

  • Very nice value Digital Piano and then some!

As reviewed by Naveen Muppane on 9/20/2013

I wanted to buy a good digital piano for my daughter so she can practice at home. Also, when time permits, I could play for fun. As the experts say all the time, touch and tone are most important for any digital piano and my budget was to find a good compromise under a thousand dollars. There are many brands and models in this price range but Yamaha has the most brand reliability. Other brands I had considered were Kawai, Roland and Kurzweil. They're all good with their own pluses and minuses so it boiled down to the basics - touch and tone. The DGX 650 is a new model and replaces the older 640. This model has the PureCF sound engine and sounds very good (lots of samples for each key from a real Yamaha grand piano). As for touch, it's a weighted keyboard (not fully or heavily weighted) which Yamaha calls GHS (Graded Hammer Standard) - it's definitely weighted when you compare with entry level Casio keyboards but not quite Yamaha's GH. However, for the price range and the purpose (to use for practice from beginner to intermediate) it's plenty. As for sensitivity levels, I could not decipher from specifications but I think it's got atleast 3 levels. So, it is good enough. Now, there are plenty of styles and songs. So many in fact, that it might take a very long time to explore them all. You can do dual (split), layer, etc. A single button is dedicated to go right back to the Grand Piano voice so it is very helpful for my daughter who only wants to focus on the Piano unlike me who likes to play with different sounds and styles. So, this is first and foremost a digital piano and then all the extra bells and whistles! There are many more features which I'm sure I will forget (smart chord, learn to play, etc, etc) and I can't vouch for them since I haven't yet gotten to play with those. Recording via USB is supported to MIDI or WAV format. WAV is good but I wish it was MP3!! As for connectivity options, you have both USB to host and USB to device. For techies, I have been told you can connect iPad using the USB connector to this piano and discover a world of options and use it for learning, playing music, etc., but again, I'm yet to try it out myself and don't know how well it works. There is a single headphone connector which my daughter uses to practice without disturbing anyone else. However, a cool feature is that you could activate the speakers also when connected to the headphones. Recording to Garage Band or other software using this feature is very, very useful since you can record your music along with the built in songs/styles (which we already paid for when we bought the DGX 650) and you can get MP3 (how's that for a workaround to get MP3?) !! When my daughter is ready for more Piano, I will buy a professionally tuned, used upright or baby grand Piano in good condition. The DGX 650 can always be there complementing the real Piano with all those songs/styles/features and when we want to play at midnight silently wearing headphones which we could never do on a real piano :) Last but not the least, don't be misled to believe that more expensive digital pianos are good furniture. Most of them are just compressed wood and if you're really looking for a good Piano which is also good furniture, nothing beats the real thing. I bought mine from my local Guitar Center and they always have hidden coupons which bring down their price by 15 or 20 percent (please ask them) which worked out cheaper than many online prices for me. Full disclosure: I don't work for Guitar Center, Yamaha or any other retailer, manufacturer or music company. I'm also not a Piano, keyboard or music expert so please take that into account as you read my review.

  • Full of features, good touch and tone, A++

As reviewed by Naveen Muppane on 9/11/2013

I was shopping for a digital piano so my daughter can practice at home. Simple requirement but I wanted something she can use as a beginner through intermediate classes. Yamaha has excellent brand and product quality / reliability, so it was my first choice. Everything I needed was in the P105 but then I noticed a hundred dollars more would get me the new DGX-650 with so many features, I don't think we'll ever find time to try them all!!! Very nice touch (weighted keyboard), tone (Pure CF) and my guess is it has atleast 3 sensitivity levels. It has hundreds of songs, styles and other modern features like USB to device and host, recording in WAV format, 128 polyphony, etc. The speakers are 6W each but they are more than enough for our living room plus they can play even if the headphones are being used, if needed. There is also an optional pedal unit LP-7A but it is cheap plastic. I've read mixed reviews about it and didn't buy it yet. The foot switch provided with the DGX-650 isn't the best out there but it meets requirements for now. Unless you need furniture style digital piano, I'd say the DGX-650 is the perfect digital Piano for the modern home. Most of the furniture style digital pianos that I saw don't have good quality wood and are mostly plywood anyway.
