apx 5a good first choice
I've had the guitar for about 3 years. I paid $499 and they've dropped the price and added a tuner. The better my playing gets the more I like it. If I had a choice now I'd say the Taylor Bib Baby sounds better acoustically, but has no pickup. Overall you'd be smart to have this as your first purchase. Immediately change the action (height of strings about the fret board) and replace the strings with super slinkies (softer to push them down). For a beginner, I had a tough time learning on this guitar right out of the box. It's like night and day after modifying the guitar. Don't be afraid to change it.

A good value, unique style
My Mrs got me this for Xmas 2005. This is one of the best guitars I have owned. The thinner size is great for those of us who are larger. It makes it easier to reach around it with your picking hand than a standard dreadnought. It also never slips off your lap because it's easier to hold (and the back is flat). Tone unamplified is fair because of the larger (oval) sound hole, but not as deep or rich as a full sized acoustic. This changes when you amplifiy it. Amplified, it's hard to tell the difference between this guitar and my 25 yr old Guild Acoustic (except that the Yamaha is easier to play). The built in preamp is not bad, but the EQ is a tad over sensitive. A small adjustment makes a very large difference tonally. I've settled on setting the EQ wipers midway (at 0)and leaving the AMF on "mid" as well and using the tone controls on my amp to tweak sound out of it. There's an upgrade to the EQ/preamp, it now has a tuner included (mine does not), very handy for new buyers. The tuning stability is very good, though after a few days of non-use, it may be off, it will be off equally (in tune with itself). When playing it every day, I rarely have to tweak a string.
This is now my main practice guitar.

Yamaha APX500
The Yamaha APX500 is a very nice guitar for those who are more petite in size, or prefer, as the name states, a thin guitar. Not only is the guitar very comfortable to hold and play, as teh action is quite low, but the tone of the guitar is also fantastic. Think of this guitar as having a tone similar to that of a Seagull S6+, but is thinner, more durable (due to the finish) and has a pick-up.
Worth noting is that the Yamaha APX500 is thinner than normal guitars, and so also has a special case designed for it. It can still be placed in standard dreadnought guitar cases, but it will move around a bit.

Great Playing Guitar
This guitar plays like an electric. The action is awesome! I'll confess the sound isn't the greatest, but it certainly isn't bad. The tuner is a bonus. Overall, you get a great guitar for the price. My stepson who insists he must have a high-end acoustic started playing it and i couldn't get him to put it down. As a female, I highly recommend since it is a little smaller. It's very comfortable to play.

Bought This Great Guitar on Saturday and am Loving It
I bought this guitar from my local guitar center and I love this guitar. It sounds great and the hight action is perfect. I had been trying to learn guitar on a ventura guitar and had a tough time changing chords on this guitar, plus the ventura was a bit hard to hold. Then I learned about the Yamaha APX500 and fell in love with the guitar. Since playing this guitar my chord changes and strumming has inproved greatly and I have only had the guitar for two days now. If you are looking for a guitar that is easy on your wallet, easy and fun to play, and sounds great plugged or unplugged then this is your guitar. I am very happy with this guitar and you will be too.

Nice Guitar
I purchased my APX 500 in Chiclayo Peru 3 weeks ago. I have 3 other Guitars including a Cordoba nylon, a Guild D40 and a Tacoma, all accoustic. I have had my Guild for around 25 years, the Cordoba and Tacoma for around 10 years and now I am believing the APX 500 will soon become my favorite. I have been playing for over 40 years now and have a good feel for accoustic necks. My 500 fits my hands like a glove. In the past I also had an HD35 Martin which did not like Peru so it found a home back in the states with a good friend of mine. A plus is that my hearing is not a good as it used to be and can´t hear the b string very well on the Guild and Cordoba. The Tacoma and the APX 500 are close with the Tacoma being a bit more in tonal quality on the bottom end but I can finally after many years truly hear the missing B. The cost here was 2 times that of Guitar Center because of import taxes. anyway, Thank you Yamaha and my wife Ana who really paid the bill.

Good Price, Good Quality
I bought the dark red burst apx500 and it sounds great. No problems at all. I wish it came with a case or gave a website for a recommended case; however, the product itself will not disappoint.

Nice
The Yamaha APX500 won't kill your budget, and it certainly won't kill your expectaions. This guitar doesn't have the vibe a true jumbo-sized acoustic. However, it stays in tune, sounds great, is amazingly playable, is a convenient size, and best of all has a built in tuner! It also has a equalizer and sounds nice on an amp. The only con is the strings, replace them. But for money, you won't be dissapointed. If you have never played before, this guitar is great to learn on. If you play actively, then you will enjoy its features and find it a pleasure to play.

APX500 first acoustic
This was my first acoustic/electric guitar and I love it. I got this guitar after playing it for a couple minutes about two months ago and its good. I like that they put a tuner in it and it has a good clean sound. I personally like thinner guitars so this was a good one for me and its easy to hold and play either standing or sitting and for a good price. After awhile though the tone gets a little plinky and it got dirty quicker than I thought it would. Overall its a good buy for any level guitar player.
