apx 5a good first choice
I've had the guitar for about 3 years. I paid $499 and they've dropped the price and added a tuner. The better my playing gets the more I like it. If I had a choice now I'd say the Taylor Bib Baby sounds better acoustically, but has no pickup. Overall you'd be smart to have this as your first purchase. Immediately change the action (height of strings about the fret board) and replace the strings with super slinkies (softer to push them down). For a beginner, I had a tough time learning on this guitar right out of the box. It's like night and day after modifying the guitar. Don't be afraid to change it.

A good value, unique style
My Mrs got me this for Xmas 2005. This is one of the best guitars I have owned. The thinner size is great for those of us who are larger. It makes it easier to reach around it with your picking hand than a standard dreadnought. It also never slips off your lap because it's easier to hold (and the back is flat). Tone unamplified is fair because of the larger (oval) sound hole, but not as deep or rich as a full sized acoustic. This changes when you amplifiy it. Amplified, it's hard to tell the difference between this guitar and my 25 yr old Guild Acoustic (except that the Yamaha is easier to play). The built in preamp is not bad, but the EQ is a tad over sensitive. A small adjustment makes a very large difference tonally. I've settled on setting the EQ wipers midway (at 0)and leaving the AMF on "mid" as well and using the tone controls on my amp to tweak sound out of it. There's an upgrade to the EQ/preamp, it now has a tuner included (mine does not), very handy for new buyers. The tuning stability is very good, though after a few days of non-use, it may be off, it will be off equally (in tune with itself). When playing it every day, I rarely have to tweak a string.
This is now my main practice guitar.

Yamaha APX500
The Yamaha APX500 is a very nice guitar for those who are more petite in size, or prefer, as the name states, a thin guitar. Not only is the guitar very comfortable to hold and play, as teh action is quite low, but the tone of the guitar is also fantastic. Think of this guitar as having a tone similar to that of a Seagull S6+, but is thinner, more durable (due to the finish) and has a pick-up.
Worth noting is that the Yamaha APX500 is thinner than normal guitars, and so also has a special case designed for it. It can still be placed in standard dreadnought guitar cases, but it will move around a bit.

Great Playing Guitar
This guitar plays like an electric. The action is awesome! I'll confess the sound isn't the greatest, but it certainly isn't bad. The tuner is a bonus. Overall, you get a great guitar for the price. My stepson who insists he must have a high-end acoustic started playing it and i couldn't get him to put it down. As a female, I highly recommend since it is a little smaller. It's very comfortable to play.

Not too good
I was looking for a nice acoustic electric and I bought this guitar after playing it for a few minutes in the store. Once I got it home the excitement began to wear off as the tone was not all that great (very plinky), plus the action was set really high. I eventually traded it back in for another guitar. Thank the stars for the GC return policy.
