  • Awesome Acoustic!

As reviewed by FRANSISCO AMAYA on 11/3/2011

I usually have very good experiences with Yamaha products. I own an electric bass and electric guitar. I really love their necks. When I got this acoustic it was beautiful. The neck feels incredible. The sound is very balanced and crisp. The preamp is outstanding with the Mic simulator which you really can get that perfect sound. Just an amazing beautiful guitar. Which is exactly what I expected from Yamaha.

  • Great for the money...plugged in it is 5 Stars 4

As reviewed by casey golden on 2/24/2012

ONLY 4 STARS Because a D28 or 814ce or J45 is the 5 star standard... There is very little info on this guitar so I figured I would give a review to help those that are looking for something beyond the marketing material and press releases. I have only had this guitar for about 3 days, but here are some initial thoughts. I am comparing this guitar to a Taylor 414ce, 214ce, 114ce, Martin, 16 series dread, x series 000, GPCPA3 and GPCPA4. The guitar has the stock strings and stock setup. The action is crazy low and feels amazing. Combined with the neck finish, it is a joy to play. There is some fret buzz but I think that will be taken care of with a quick setup. The guitar was tuned once and has stayed in tune very well. The tuner seems accurate and is very easy to use. The case is very nice and the guitar comes with a sound hole cover as well! This guitar has the brilliance of the Taylor guitars. To my ears it sounds more well balanced than the 214 and 114, but does not approach the vibe, or smoothness of the 414ce. That may be due to the fact that my Taylor 414 is a few years older or that it is a $2000 guitar with ovangkol back and sides. It also does not poses the low end richness of the GP martins, however it does sound richer and more complex than the 000 size x series. I imagine that the size of the Yamaha is the reason that it does not have a ton of low end. It is more along the lines of a 000 size body, but about as deep as the GP or x14 Taylors. I think the Dread Yamaha would be best for someone looking for a more well balanced un plugged sound. The Yamaha concert body is incredibly comfortable to play and hold and for my purposes (studio guitar) is definitely the right choice. The look of the guitar is quite nice and the craftsmanship is very good. The bindings and inlays have no noticeable flaws however the pick guard was put on a little off center of the sound hole. You have to picky to find flaws in the craftsmanship. Plugged in is where this guitar excels! It sounds better than every other guitar save the GPCPA3 with the full on f1 aura system. Obviously the Martin and Taylor electronics are much sleeker and sexier, but for sound.. the Yamaha is top of the pack. (again except for the f1 aura). It is very similar to the F1 but without as many options. If you are going to be using your guitar plugged in then it is a NO BRAINER. You are paying for unplugged tone, more refined craftsmanship and slightly more options on the electronics... plus a name. In this case that was not worth a grand (to me). The reality is, that every guitar will sound a little different. I have played a 214 that sounded like tin and crap and one that sounded relatively warm. This review is based on my ears and is a broad stroke review. Some may find that the GPCPA3 sounds really thin in comparison to a D28, and to be fair.. it does! Some find Taylors to be overly bright and again compared to Martins Dreads, they typically are. The sounds of the Yamaha AC3R is very similar to what you find in today's mid to low end Taylors and in similar sized Marins (since they seem to be moving in that direction). To compare apples to apples, a 314 is about $1599 and is where All Solid Taylors start. I would chose this guitar over a 314ce simply for the electronics. The playability and tone is very similar and would be a personal preference thing. To be fair, I would chose the new GPCPA3 over this Yamaha is price was not a factor, but the difference is small for $1000! All of these guitars have a similar tone, I think, due to their relatively small sizes. The seem to be crisper more distinct high end brilliance and less low end booming. The AC3R is never muddy or dull, very articulate and a amazing to play with a great feel. I chose it over Seagull or Breedlove in a second... the fact that is it ALL solid Wood to boot... nuff said!

  • No other choice

As reviewed by Douglas Blecki _ on 8/29/2013

Once you pick up this guitar there is simply no other choice. I have spend many years shopping for, collecting and working very hard to become a very average player. You cannot find a better selection at any price in terms of quality, attention to detail, playability and performance except for maybe another Yamaha Model.
