      Yamaha NCX900 Acoustic-Electric Classical Guitar (621049)
Availability:

The NCX900 is a capable instrument, delivering everything from subtle fingerpicking to flatpick solos.

Yamaha's NCX900 is a handsome classical guitar designed to offer a feel and playability closer to that of a steel-stringed acoustic. This professional level model is the perfect choice for adding the warmth of nylon-string acoustic tone to your music.

The NCX line guitars inherit many of the characteristics of classical guitars, such as fingerboard width, neck shape, body thickness, and 12th fret joint. Their cutaway bodies and lower string height offer more flexible playability. The Yamaha NCX900 acoustic-electric guitar provides not only classical guitarists with an instrument that is a pleasure to play, but other guitarists playing a wide range of musical styles from flamenco to Latin to popular, and much more.

This Yamaha NCX900 acoustic guitar starts with a solid Engelmann spruce top, for warm, balanced tone. The neck is nato, while the back and sides are flamed maple. Also known as "curly maple", flamed maple is prized for its bright, stunning appearance. Hard and strong it is often used for necks on electric guitars. When used for backs and sides it produces a crisp, clear, less resonant tone that cut through well, making it great for lead playing. classical, flamenco, Latin, or pop, whatever your style, these Yamaha guitars play and sound great thanks to a traditional design ready to accommodate a wide range of playing styles. The neck shape is identical to that on a classical guitar, with fingerboard measurements of 52mm at the nut and 62mm at the joint. The NCX900's bracing design focuses on delivering the best of nylon-string tone, with warmth and excellent response. It produces a well-balanced tone over the instrument's entire range and enables this Yamaha guitar to accommodate a wide range of playing and musical styles

The NCX900 classical guitar also features the A.R.E. (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement), an original wood reforming technology developed by Yamaha. Through precise control of temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure, the molecular properties of the wood can be manipulated into a more acoustically ideal condition, similar to the molecular characteristics of woods in instruments that have been played for years. It produces a sharper tone while simultaneously controlling dissonance in the high range. Instruments that have undergone this process have received high marks from a great number of musicians. Their evaluations are nearly identical to those for guitars that have been played for years, and their comments often include terms such as "well settled," "mature," "warm," "excellent resonance," and "clear."

Yamaha's ART (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) pickup system is purpose designed to offer the most natural, dynamic and expressive electro-acoustic sound on the market. Proprietary multi-layer contact sensors perfectly combine ultra-wide dynamic range with outstanding feedback rejection for the most accurate and natural performance sound. The Yamaha NCX900 uses a 2-way system with contact pickups mounted on the treble and bass sides of the guitar bridge. To reduce unwanted feedback caused by vibration the NX Series contact pickup utilizes an additional multilayer damper to ensure the tone is captured in its purest form. Complementing the warm, full mid-range of the nylon-string tone, the System 61 preamp allows individual volume control over the treble and bass side pickups, allowing you to get the perfect blend for your style. The System 61 preamp also features a 3-band EQ for sound shaping and an on-board tuner. Case sold separately.

  • Very nice guitar

As reviewed by Steve Bartelt on 2/16/2011

First, the cons: The finish, while generally quite good, had a few rough spots on the top/side. A little polish took care of it, but... a new guitar shouldn't need this step. Otherwise, a very pretty guitar. The action was way too high for me. After I'd filed the saddle and nut down to where the action was just right (for me) - low, no buzz - there was less than a millimeter of saddle above the bridge slot. I file the bridge itself down a bit to allow enough saddle clearance (admittedly, I have the action lower than most). Not enough adjustability, in my opinion. Also, the tuner is not very user-friendly, though better than nothing. I wound up using a headstock tuner, instead. Now, the good news: The tonality is quite pleasant acoustically. There are a few minor resonances at a couple of spots on the neck (especially the D string), but nothing I don't find on my twice-as-expensive Taylor nylon. Bass response is excellent. In fact, it leaves the treble in the background, a bit. (I think some experimentation with string brand/type is in order to address this.) And get this: It plays in tune all they way up the neck! Not just good intonation... perfect. With no changes made to the compensation on the saddle. In 45 years, I've never owned a guitar that did that. I've just started experimenting with the electronics and, so far, I'm impressed. The pick-up system on this guitar seems to be less spotty than the piezo strips on similar guitars I've used. The tonal range is excellent, and very nice across the range. The bass seems just a bit too dominant throughout, reflecting the guitar's acoustic properties, though, again, string choice will surely affect this. All in all, a pleasant surprise, and a guitar I will use often.
