  • fantastic, fun little instrument

As reviewed by lucas on 7/7/2011

i've spent the better part of 15 years playing punk, heavy rock and noise -- most recently with a gibson sg, a marshall jvm and a host of effects pedals. loud. but my alter-ego, escape-from-the-city campfire side implored me to start looking at ukuleles and small classical guitars just to get back to basics. while i'm still exploring the uke options, the yamaha guitalele is the perfect bridge instrument since it plays exactly like a guitar, albeit in a different pitch range. anyone with passing knowledge of first position guitar chords will find this a winner, and theory-heads might find a novel way to shred away on this tiny acoustic. after owning it for a week, i still haven't turned on my marshall. it does have a few downsides. it loses tune fairly easily, and the intonation leaves a little fidelity to be desired ... but what it lacks in precision (it is only a hundred bucks, after all), it more than makes up for in charm. anyone hoping to find enjoyment in the utter simplicity of a happy-sounding little instrument need look no further. throw it in your backpack, take it on the road and go full-on hobo bohemian. it'll feel really nice ... and sound even better.

  • Wonderful All-Around Hybrid!!!

As reviewed by Paul Oakes on 4/16/2014

Like a lot of musicians, I wanted to diversify. And with Yamaha's Guitalele, I've been thoroughly satisfied. It's a six-string hybrid, combining the best of both a guitar and uke. For comparison, it's like putting a capo on the 5th fret of a guitar. The strings that come with the instrument have a very bright and happy tone to them. And for its size, the guitalele is loud. Now, if only Yamaha would make an acoustic-electric version! As is, you won't be disappointed.
