Not a High Gain Comp

By amir

from odenton md

Great pedal, I can't say that enough. Runs REALLY well with a delay pedal, brings out harmonics, doesn't color your tone TOO much. However, it spikes the treble side of things a bit. This is fine for the most part because it makes for clear compressed sound. Considering most comp just dampen and muddy up your tone too much, I thought this pedal was even sent. However, if you are a part of the recent prog metal movement of gear snobs that run a dist pedal in front of your od channel, then this isn't your pedal. I have a OCD in front of my H&K tubemeister and when I have this pedal in the chain then I get some serious noise and hissing. Noise suppressor wont help too much cause the noise bleeds onto your play as well. All that said, still a great pedal just not for the one sound I was going for.

Compressor Pedals Enter A New Age!

By David A

from Seattle, WA

The Xotic SP Compressor is without a doubt a 5 Star product! For many years I used a 1953 Gibson ES 175 or 1966 Telecaster plugged into a MXR Dyna Comp and grew to appreciate the warm squash this device had to offer as I lost the taste for most all distortion devices on the market. The Dyna Comp was a simple two knob device that squeezed my signal rather nicely to which I still have 3 of them floating about the house. I also have the more expanded version, MXR Limiter dating from the early 80s that also does a nice job modifying my signal. The only initial down side to the Dyna Comp was a little bit of noise. However the real down side to the old Dyna Comp was sometime in the early 90s, after Dunlop acquired ownership of the MXR Product, decided to reduce the cost of production by having all the jacks, pots, and switch connected directly to the PC Board via solder bath. Not only did this process of assembly affect the durability of this classic old compressor, it also compromised the tone and performance of a one great pedal. The vintage Dyna Comps wired point to point are far superior product. If you have one, keep it! In the wake of the cheapening of the Dyna Comp came the Keeley Compressor. I bought a Keeler Compressor somewhere around 10 years ago a noticed an improvement in performance over my old Dyna Comps with less noise. And with going into great detail, every guitar, from my old 1951 L5 to any of my old Fender sound great through this compressor. So now a new and somewhat revolutionary compressor has hit in the market by way of the Xotic SP. These guys are making some of the best pedals that I?ve run across in years. By the time I got my SP I was already the proud owner of an EP Booster and SL Drive. To later I have to say it is the only distortion that has come out in the last 30 years with a decent sounding tone that does not narrow the bandwidth of your signal path. Not to mention these pedals just happen to be the cutest looking signal devices on the market. What really makes the SP Compressor outstanding is the 3 position Hi/Mid/Low switch. The versatility to this pedal via of this switch is just amazing. In the Hi mode I can match the performance of my Keeley and Dyna Comp compressors for Jazz applications. However, I have taken using the Mid position for a great Blues/Rock tone. In this position the pedal allows me to play over the top of the compressor for soaring highs. This works in great combination with my 1960 Telecaster with Barden pickups. Anyway, I highly recommend the Xotic SP Compressor with its advantage in versatility over other compressors on the market. And here?s the bonus, this pedal is priced about $100 less than the Keeley. My hat?s off to you folks at Xotic for manufacturing a fantastic compressor at an affordable price that will thousands of guitar players sound better and better. Now if you can reinvent the Sola Sound Tone Bender in one of these small bud boxes, that would be fantastic!

Small, Rock solid, sweat sounding and versatile Compressor!

By Joel Feldman

from Jerusalem

Out of the box, this Xotic pedal size is quite small, but still heavy (260g), rock solid and very well built. A comp level toggle switch and 2 big knobs (plus 4 internal dip-switches) are very versatile and offers great sounds from each and every configuration. The pedal sound is just great. Dead quiet (if set right in the pedal chain) and offers a very sweet sound. I like my settings with a very subtle compressor, but even when you push it to the maximum option - this pedal offers sweat compressed sound, which is not too much squashy and feels pretty musical to my ears. Every knob tweak will put your sound in a all new place, making this easy-to-use compressor a very diverse pedal. One of the top features is the clean boost. Set the volume knob just a bit above the amp's volume, and the pedal just makes the amp worm and clean, pushed to the right place. I just can't turn it off. The value for money is just by far without any competition at this range. I highly recommend this pedal.

THE BEST!!! It deserves 6 Stars!!

By Scott Vernon

from Riesterstown MD

If you are thinking of buying a compressor, or, your like myself and have not had the best experience with them in the past, LOOK NO FURTHER!! As one musician to another, if your thinking of spending 99 bucks on other brands, do yourself a favor and save 40 more dollars and buy this thing, it is a truly amazing compressor. (lots of options) I run it through my effects loop as a solo boost, with the EP booster in the pre amp section of my amp, and swinggggg its fantastic!!! Thanks Xotic, you've done it again!!!

Xotic Effects SP Compressor

By Roger Morton

from st Petersburg,FL

Having used many compressors through the years I am really impressed with the Xotic SP. It is very quite and can be transparent or add a pump depending on how it is set. There is a high/medium/low value switch with controls for volume and blend. Inside there are 4 mini 'dip switches'. Although it sounds great as set from the factory these dip switches can really focus how the compressor works to suit your taste/need for the moment. They are something you HAVE to play with or you'll miss out on a great feature. I set the volume and blend controls to unity at 12:00 and then started on the suggested settings with the dip switches and used the low/medium/high switch until I found MY most useful setting. The level switch up top really gives variety to how the unit works and each level is useful. Once you have the dip switches set button up the bottom and start using the highly interactive volume/blend controls. The blend varies the dry guitar signal with the compressor and the volume boosts or cuts the overall level. Using the level switch varies the amount of compression. This is probably THE most acrobatic compressor I've use. Regardless of how or what I hook it up to be it an electric guitar with SC or HB pups, an acoustic with piezos, a home made box guitar or a bass it is highly useful to crafting a great sound. Dunno how I ever got along without it. Without doubt the best compressor I've used in 40+ years and in a little teeny pedal no less. I suspect battery drain to be nominal but its generally on a pedal board with a power supply, it sounds great with the couple of battery powered amps I have and gives a little extra oomph to them as well. Great job Xotic.
