Overview

The Way Huge Electronics Green Rhino Mk II Overdrive pedal has all the gorgeous, classic overdrive that you crave, but it's evolved to include cool new features that make it even more rhinoceriffic. In addition to the Volume, Tone, and Drive controls, you get a 100Hz EQ knob to cut or boost your low end by 12dB. Your low notes can either shake the ground like a stampede across the savannah or cut through the mix like a charging rhino's horn.

This pachyderm of a pedal also sports a Curve control to fine-tune the corner frequencies of your tone. All this amazing tone shaping makes other overdrives seem boring and one-dimensional by comparison.

In front of a clean amp, with the Volume and Drive set at noon, you can go from pristine purity to a punchy, dynamic rhythm tone. Set the Drive low and crank the Volume and add tons of boost to wallop the input of any amp. Turn up the Drive control with the Rhino in front of a distorted channel and hear more gain and sustain than you ever thought your amp was capable of. And no matter how you use it, the Green Rhino Mk II will deliver clean operation, quiet relay-based true-bypass switching, and the rock-solid construction that Way Huge is famous for.

Features
  • 100Hz EQ knob to cut or boost your low end by ±12dB
  • Curve control to fine-tune the corner frequencies of your tone
  • Crystal-clear leads and punchy, dynamic rhythm tones

I just found out about this pedal. I̴ve tried a couple of Way Huge pedals and they where Ok, but not even close to how good this pedal sounds. I discovered it on youtube, saw a couple of videos and decided to give it a shot. The result is way beyond what you would expect from an overdrive pedal, specially comparing it to the famous TubeScreamer. Imagine you had a TubeScreamer, but with a knob to control the midrange (wich sometimes can be too much on the tubescreamer), and an extra 100Hz knob to control your low end, punch & body of your sound. Thats what the Green Rhino is. It is by no means an expensive pedal, so what are you waiting for?

So, I don't want to say this is a bad pedal. It's not. It just wasn't what I was looking for. I've used many different OD pedals, and i have to say, this one was much different in my setup than the others I've used. I'd say it's a great booster OD, but wasn't so good at adding the gain/distortion to my tone. I have a single channel head, and typically I'll keep the pre at about 5, and use the OD for the rest of the screaming, therefore, the output on the OD is most important. With the Green Rhino, I set the output, then slowly turn gain up until desired sound is reached. As I turn up the gain, it reaches a point where it sounds like it's clipping. Almost sounded like a Class A amp dimed. I tried many different parameters. Lowering the output, messing with the gain, changing the pre on my head, etc. Nothing usable was ever reached for me. I know my head is very finicky with pedals in general, but for the price, this pedal had to be perfect for me to keep it. It's also very large, which is lame on a pedalboard. My main issue in the first place was that OD pedals robbed low end. After trying this pedal, I ended up getting the MXR M77, and it was perfect. That said, if you are looking for a more vintage, lower gain sound, the Green Rhino might work well. If you're looking for a more modern, crunchy/distorted sound, I'd look elsewhere. I think it's also notable to mention that the other reviews stating that the Rhino is very Tube Screamer mid hump sounding are somewhat accurate. This pedal definitely adds it's own color to the tone. Good luck finding your ideal tone!

Great Pedal!

This pedal does everything you wish your Tube Screamer could do and more! The 100hz knob really helps to beef up the low end, and it's just such a great overdrive tone.

Perfect Heavy Metal Pedal

By sarah

from st paul mn

You want a Sabbath tone? Plug in this pedal, turn up the bass boost, turn up the distortion and play the riff. Shake the walls my friends. It really does a lot more than that too, very versatile pedal with a great mid option that takes a real music ear to understand whats happening. Its there, and it does stuff. Really great pedal, amazing construction, great metal sheen look, and when you turn that bass up it shakes the room like a rhino!

Jeorge Tripps got it right with this one

By Gabriel Meyers

from Kaplan, Louisiana

This thing is great, if you are thinking about this pedal, get it, you won't be disappointed. The best Overdrive I have ever used, and yes I like it more than a Tubescreamer, plus it has a cooler name! Tubescreamers can get muddy but with the 100hz and Curve you can tweak it to work with any level of gain and tone. It has a real natural overdrive, everything has clarity and isn't carried away and buried. It has gain from clean boost to slightly dirty blues to "Dimed" Marshall. This thing is great if you have a beautiful clean tube amp, but it really shines with a slightly dirty tube amp and you click it on, pure overdriven tone heaven, sustain for days. It's with the Dunlop/MXR/Way Huge family so it's built like a tank with a blinding blue LED, plus it's True Bypass!

A modest improvement on a famous green pedal

By scott trowbridge

from Washington, DC

I was looking for modern replacements for a nice green overdrive pedal I once had with a spanish name. This does really capture the 808 sounds well, but adds two additional knobs. A bass 100Hz and a mid curve. This gives you essentially the ability to EQ your drive and breakup in a handy way. Solidly built as all Way Huge products are.

The Power of a Rhino

By brenden laine

from nh

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first got to try it, but sitting in GC I got to compare it to a tube screamer in a Fender Hot Rod and it just sounded so much nicer. I was worried it wouldn't sound as good with my current rig, since I have a solid state amp (still saving for my tube), but it still sounds amazing!! Thank You Way Huge!

NOISY!!

By Ben Faust

from Lebanon, Indiana

Yes this pedal sounds good. Ive owned it for about 4 months and used it in a few gigs and my amp had a buzzing problem. I finally went straing into my amp with no pedals and the noise was gone. I went pedal by pedal to see what it was and it was this pedal sending a lot of noise in my chain. I took it out and the noise was cut by 75%. It sounded pretty good but it wasnt worth the noise.

a singing rhino?!?

By Logan Craine

from oklahome

I got this thing a couple days ago cause i desperately needed a good overdrive. i have like 2 different distortion pedals that dont do the trick, and a multieffects pedal that doesnt do overdrive as light as i would like, and this thing solved all of my problems. i plug in my gibson les paul studio and it sounds holy. i dont really know if my mid scoop knob even works, because it doesnt really do anything. but the bass frequency knob is sweet. really helps cut through. i really love the just flat out creamyness of this. its like listening to butter that tastes like chocolate rasberry cake. it can do so much more than the ts808 and it sounds just as good if not better. and it costs 50 bucks less. and its got sick hendrix tone. so if i were you, i would just get it. i

About as good as they come

By GK

from Fresno, CA

Picked up the Rhino MkII yesterday after watching a couple of YouTube video demos on the pedal. This is one of the nicest sounding OD pedals on the market, period. THE best? Well that is too subjective a statement, but certainly in the top five imo. Very well built, extremely flexible, killer sounding and the price is more than fair at ...great value...recommend to anyone looking for an OD pedal...give it a shot you won't be sorry.
