Comments about Washburn M3SW F-Style Mandolin w/case:
I was lucky enough to find this used on the GC website, at almost half the price ($299), and it was in perfect condition; hardly played at all. The "fit and finish" is beautiful and it has a certain shimmering hue with the sunburst finish that is so nice. The headstock is iconic and the tuners and pick guard are good quality. It has snowflake inlays rather than dots. However, like most mandolins, it wasn't set up properly and I suspect the original owner returned it for this reason. The action was high and the strings were old. Out of the box it would have been difficult and unpleasant to play. I adjusted the truss rod, lowered the bridge and sanded it down, to lower it about 1/16" I then used a nail file to deepen the channels of the nut. Finally, I changed the strings, adjusting the intonation with an electronic tuner. All of this took about an hour and the result was great, although it buzzes and frets-out on the second octave on the D string. So, that's not a problem, since I don't typically play that high up on the neck, but I will continue to make adjustments to resolve this problem, probably by raising the bridge slightly. The tone of this solid wood mandolin is beautiful and given that it is made of solid wood, it will only sound better in the future as it "opens up". This is a keeper!
