Overview

The Washburn M1SDL A-style mandolin offers a modern look and quality craftsmanship that has made Washburn a household name. The mandolin is built on the popular A-style platform-a classic acoustic folk design producing deep, powerful attack. It starts with a solid spruce top for warm, balanced tone right out of the box. The arched back and sides are maple, offering beauty and performance.

The bound rosewood fingerboard promotes warm sustain, while the A-style design and the oval soundhole produces and full tone and projection-ideal for soloing and rhythm in barn-burnin' bluegrass or folk settings. A striking white binding outlines the teardrop body and gold tuning machines offer precise tuning in a modern appearance. The Washburn M1SDL A-style mandolin comes out of the box ready to jam. Thanks to Washburn's careful handmade craftsmanship, this 8-string bluegrass standard will compliment any string band outfit, from parking lot jams to center stage. Case sold separately.

I'll begin by saying I am just a beginner mandolin player, but I've played violin for many years. I always wanted to learn mandolin, as it is strung the same as a violin, G-D-A-E. I tried out a few others and I don't think there is anything better in this price range. Solid spruce and maple are a must. Nothing laminate. I settled on the round hole A-type because it definitely projects the best sound, and is about twice as loud as the type with f-holes. It just has a better overall tonal quality than anything else under $300. Even so, I will also put a pickup on it to run through my amp. I bought this model new in the box, so the tech at Guitar Center set up the bridge for me. Also got the Road Runner travel bag and the added pro coverage. I was told that mandolins can be somewhat fragile instruments and they are strung so tight that weather can really affect them, and they've seen even expensive ones come in all distorted from stress. I believe this Washburn model has an adjustable truss through the neck, instead of the neck just being glued on, and that was another plus factor in my decision. Even though it's made in China, it seems to be put together well. Only tiny imperfections which I don't doubt they're all going to have, and which you wouldn't notice unless you look really close. I'd recommend this to any beginner. You want to learn on a good instrument and not be frustrated by a cheapo brand. And get an inexpensive Snark clip-on digital tuner. You're going to need it. The tech told me it may take several days for the instrument to settle in with new, tuned up strings.

Great Mandolin Great Value

By DakaDave

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I must say as a active player this mandolin is probably one of the best especially for the price. I got the black one and it was flawless in every department when I recieved it. It was also set up and played great right out of the box the strings were even good and didn't need replaced. The craftmanship is very high on the one I have. It's tone and projection are very good. I play with various other mando players and some have very high end Gibsons and the like and I can honestly say this mando will hold it's own with any of them. I wouldn't hesitate to recomend this for a starter or for those who just need another mando as a back up. It's my primary instrument and gets played every week. All and all its a great deal. Buy one and see!

I love this mandolin!

By Gwen Newclear

from Carson City, Nevada

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I had my mandolin sent to Guitar Center and I picked it up there. They set it up for me and I was able to watch and I learned how to set the bridge for this O-hole mandolin: locate the bridge: measure the distance from BOTTOM of nut to the BOTTOM of the 12 fret. Then set the TOP of bridge that distance from the BOTTOM of the 12th fret. And of course, when tuned up, the 12th fret will tune to your open strings. I have set bridges before but always on a mandolin with f-sound-holes. A week later, I lowered the bridge (they set it high-- blue-grass style but I don't play bluegrass much). I was really delighted when I lowered the bridge to find that this mandolin had the best action of any mandolin that I have played so far. It is WAY more beautiful than in the picture and it is built solid and sturdy. I have had my eye on this mandolin for years and I am so glad that I bought this one! I have been playing it constantly since I purchased it --- I just can't seem to put it down.

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I love this little Mandolin! Its no Gibson, but it doesn't pinch the pocket book like one either! Did need new strings. Set up was a breeze(and I'm no luther!!!!!!) Watched one video and sat down did it. This was a temp. while mine was being made, but I've got a feeling it'll never go any further than the living room. Great begainer model as it is very playable! Mine is easier to play than models as much as twice as expensive. Overall great little mandolin!(And the blue is just cool!)

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I play guitar and a little fiddle, but I'm new to mandolin. In fact before I bought this, I only played one once. I was looking for a modestly priced mandolin with a solid top (didn't mind if it was not carved) and truss rod. I also wanted an oval hole. This instrument did not disappoint! It sets up pretty well out of the box. I'm sure the action at the nut could be lowered a little, but not much. It's pretty low as it is, and is really comfortable to play. It projects really well, and can keep up fairly well when playing in a group with other acoustic instruments. The pictures online don't do this thing justice. It's a little different aesthetically than you would expect from a traditional instrument like a mandolin, but that is part of what drew me to it. You don't see too many blue mandolins out there! The grain on the maple back and neck are really attractive, and there don't appear to be too many A styles with F style headstocks. Very nice little instrument that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in getting started with this really cool style of music.

Washburn M1SDL Mandolin

By Jim Coles

from Medford, OR

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I've had my new M1SDL for over a month now and have to say it's a very fine instrument. I put on new strings and set up the mandolin before I played it. (One of the reviews tells how to do that.) I've played more expensive mandolins and believe this one has tone & volume as good or better. A beautiful wood finish (Mine is black) IT STAYS IN TUNE! A STEAL for the price!

Great Mandolin For The Price

By KYLE HILLERT

from Central Texas

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I have been wanting a mandolin for a while and looked at quite a few, never being happy with what was available at the stores in my price range. After going through all the online possibilities I settled on the black version of this model based partly on the reviews and partly on the description and construction. I liked the center hole (Celtic?) design due to its ability to project sound better, and boy does it. This is a very clear, loud mandolin, with good sound. Setup was fairly easy with octave tuning being accurate on all strings except the second G string which seems to sit a little higher on the bridge. I will try a very small amount of "sanding" the groove when I change strings to correct this. Otherwise it is a nice playing, nice looking and great sounding instrument for the price. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was due to the G string issue and it being completely made in China. I recommend this mandolin for all levels of players. It is great to learn on.

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I had been shopping for several years before actually spending the money and found this had features where other mandolins I had considered purchasing were considerably higher price in music stores. The catch was of course, you were paying for "set-up" of the new instrument. I realized, worse case scenario, I may have to take it someplace to have this work done...any yet, I play Violin and have replaced strings on them before so I want to try this. Looking on line there were several places that discussed how to "set the bridge" at the twelfth fret and compare it to the bridge to the open string until you get a perfect octave. Okay, so I broke the E string one time until I finally got it right ...but wow...I know how to adjust my own instruments bridge now! (So that cost me all of $6.00 to purchase a new set of strings and that was cheaper than paying someone to set it up for me.) I also learned how to set up my "regulation"/ (string height), which meant I took my old instrument afterwards and improved things on it as well! This whole experience challenged me to learn more about my instrument and now I will be able to sweeten up regulations for the humidity on the fly. AND...OH YES.. I'M IN LOVE WITH MY NEW TOY!

    Nice Mandolin

    By Deborah Jarvis

    from Salem, NH

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

I have not had much experience with mandolins, but so far, this seems like a nice instrument. The resonance is lovely, and once the strings finally adjusted to being tuned, it has stayed there. I did buy new strings as was recommended by other reviews, but have so far not needed to change them as the sound seems to be fine. I will change them eventually. I tend to choose instruments based on the reviews I read online, and so far, this mandolin is living up to my expectations. We have had to be creative with strap placement, but have finally settled on a place to tie it as there is no upper peg to attach the strap. Other than that, no complaints. The set-up that the service rep at the store helped me put together included a gig bag, book, strings, and strap, and all of these meet my expectations as well.

    Solid starter for certain

    By Jerry Mayo

    from Mahwah, New Jersey

Comments about Washburn M1SDL A-Style Mandolin:

New to the mandolin but played this Washburn in store and was very impressed with solid spruce top, quality, finish + sounded great for both notes and chords for REM's "losing my religion" the rock anthem for mandolins. My only real concern was tuning pegs/ hardware looked pretty light weight. Weeks later I got an email promo for a restock so I ordered on line. It arrived unblemished in perfect condition - note all the difficulties stated in other reviews regarding bridge installation are accurate but once you are in fact set up this was indeed a great buy! A very well built instrument plus it really stays in tune very well with significant playing in spite of my worries regarding tuning hardware. A++
