The M6 SW is a very pretty instrument and the AAA all solid woods used in its production is a big plus. The mandolin sound was fair out of the box but with a good set up and long play the mandolin continues to open up. I have owned the M6 SW for almost two years and have grown to really love its balanced voice. I use medium strings, J74 D'Adario, the G strings are 40 gauge or GHS with the G string gauge at 39, medium string gauges seem to produce the best sound for this instrument. The MFG reported that the heavy gauge, J75 or Bill Monroe, strings would not harm the instrument, I prefer the sound of the slightly lighter gauge strings. Did I mention Washburn warrants this mandolin for a lifetime. That says something for the product. The Bluegrass chop is very woody. This mandolin is as good as any Pac. Rim instrument and though not in the class of the $3,000 up Gibson F styles, it is very good for the price. I rated the mandolin a 4 and not a five because of the polyurethane coat and plastic nut. I believe the volume is dampened by a thick coat of the Polyeurathane and would prefer a buffed laquor or varnish finish. I replaced the nut with a MOP nut and found that added aesthetics and voice to the M6. I recommend this mandolin to anyone that needs a quality product at an affordable price. To get the best from any mandolin always have the instrument professionally set up, that's a given. I will enjoy playing this beauty for many years. Just remember a solid wood instrument will get better with age and play.
