The Washburn M1SDL A-style mandolin offers a modern look and quality craftsmanship that has made Washburn a household name. The mandolin is built on the popular A-style platform—a classic acoustic folk design producing deep, powerful attack. It starts with a solid spruce top for warm, balanced tone right out of the box. The arched back and sides are maple, offering beauty and performance. The bound rosewood fingerboard promotes warm sustain, while the A-style design and the oval soundhole produces and full tone and projection—ideal for soloing and rhythm in barn-burnin' bluegrass or folk settings. A striking white binding outlines the teardrop body and gold tuning machines offer precise tuning in a modern appearance. The Washburn M1SDL A-style mandolin comes out of the box ready to jam. Thanks to Washburn's careful hand-made craftsmanship, this 8-string bluegrass standard will compliment any string band outfit, from parking lot jams to center stage.

I must say as a active player this mandolin is probably one of the best especially for the price. I got the black one and it was flawless in every department when I recieved it. It was also set up and played great right out of the box the strings were even good and didn't need replaced. The craftmanship is very high on the one I have.
It's tone and projection are very good. I play with various other mando players and some have very high end Gibsons and the like and I can honestly say this mando will hold it's own with any of them. I wouldn't hesitate to recomend this for a starter or for those who just need another mando as a back up. It's my primary instrument and gets played every week. All and all its a great deal. Buy one and see!
I had my mandolin sent to Guitar Center and I picked it up there. They set it up for me and I was able to watch and I learned how to set the bridge for this O-hole mandolin:
locate the bridge: measure the distance from BOTTOM of nut to the BOTTOM of the 12 fret. Then set the TOP of bridge that distance from the BOTTOM of the 12th fret.
And of course, when tuned up, the 12th fret will tune to your open strings. I have set bridges before but always on a mandolin with f-sound-holes.
A week later, I lowered the bridge (they set it high-- blue-grass style but I don't play bluegrass much). I was really delighted when I lowered the bridge to find that this mandolin had the best action of any mandolin that I have played so far. It is WAY more beautiful than in the picture and it is built solid and sturdy. I have had my eye on this mandolin for years and I am so glad that I bought this one! I have been playing it constantly since I purchased it --- I just can't seem to put it down.
I have been teaching myself the guitar for over a year now, and I have fallen in love with all types of guitars. I recently wanted to branch out a bit, so I decided to get this mandolin. (I also wanted to be able to play songs like "The Battle of Evermore" and "Going to California")I took a chunk of my graduation money and used it to buy this mandolin. It was beautiful right out of the box. I will say though, that you really should get a new set of strings for it. The strings that come with it are pretty crappy. Other than that, it holds a tune pretty nicely, and it has a great loud vibrant sound for such a small instrument.
