      Washburn M118SW F-Style Mandolin (502034)

Distressed for a classic mandolin look, crafted for a vintage folk tone.

The Washburn M118SW F-style mandolin comes out of the box looking and feeling like a family heirloom. The mandolin is built on the popular F-style platform-a classic acoustic folk design belting out bright, powerful tone. It starts with a carved solid spruce top for warm, balanced tone right out of the box. The mandolin's back and sides are bookmatched carved solid flamed maple, offering tremendous beauty.

The ebony fingerboard over the maple neck offers a warm sustain, while the F-style mandolin design keeps your attack punchy and quick-ideal for chopping away in barn-burnin' bluegrass settings. A subtle rope purfling outlines the Florentine body, while the distressed Allan style tailpiece and distressed stained matte finish continue the vintage look. Four inline open-gear distressed tuning machines offer precise tuning with an aged appearance. The distressed wood and natural finish maintain a timeless folk look and sound that turns heads from parking lot jams to center stage. Includes case.

I'm comparing this Washburn Mandolin with a Kentucky KM805 which I also bought at Guitar Center for almost the exact same price. My first and greatest impression between the two is the warm tone that the Washburn has over the higher tone of the Kentucky. Also this Washburn seems to have more resonance. Plenty of volume and the notes ring true all up and down the scale. Expect to adjust the action and the intonation as soon as you take it out of the box. Easy to do with the videos available on the internet today. Even with the bridge adjusted on the Washburn as low as possible, the action is still a little higher on the Washburn. Still very playable and the warm tone more than makes up for a little higher action. One thing to be prepared for, the neck is a little thicker on the Washburn and takes some getting used to compared to the Kentucky. Also the scale extends a little further into the picking area and this also takes a little adjustment to keep from hitting the scale with the pick. The quality of the construction is almost flawless. Very well manufactured. Above all, the overall look of the mandolin is gorgeous with the distressed finish. This is certainly what convinced me to buy it (that and the Washburn name) and I have been very pleased. Even the hardware fits the look beautifully. One thing I havent' seen in any reviews is the case that it comes in. A lot of thought was put into it from the faux leather exterior with the Washburn logo to the green velvet interior all the way down to the vintage locks. Whether an experienced player or a beginner I believe you will be very proud to own this one. I am.

  • This is the real deal!

As reviewed by Matt Kniser on 1/23/2014

First of all, this is an AMAZING instrument! It has exceeded my expectations. I was looking for a mandolin that replicated the Gibson F5?s from the late 20?s (a hard task with a budget under $1,000). After trying a few models (particularly Loars) I was a little distraught because the neck was too wide and gave me cramps. While all of them are good instruments, the M118SWK blows all of them out of the water in every aspect. The maple back and sides and spruce top are gorgeous. You actually see the wood, not a bunch of paint. It?s distressed so it looks and feels like an F5 that you would find in your grandpa?s closet. (Definitely agree with the other reviewers. A lot of time and thought was put into this instrument.) It?s built like a tank (which is a plus). The tone is incredible! It has the warm, woody chop and bark that you would expect from a professional instrument costing three times as much. You don?t have to wait for it to open up because Washburn made the instrument wider so it would sound like it had some miles on it. It also has that classic throaty sound that everyone is after with singing highs. It?s actually balanced in highs and lows (unlike others that have too much treble). The fretboard and string spacing is wider too so it is easier to play. This makes it great if you are a serious beginner or a guitar player transitioning to mandolin (like me). Finally, you don?t have to replace any parts. It comes great as is! I took it in for a set up and had the frets filed at the edges. Now it plays like a dream. It even comes with a hardshell case. At this price it?s a steal! I am really happy and confident that this mado will progress with me as I get better at the mandolin. Special thanks to Guitar Center in Clackamas Oregon and Tony Robbins for providing me with a great shopping experience! A note to beginners, this comes strung with medium sized strings (.011) which are harder to play so you may want to take it to a professional and have it set up for lighter strings.

  • A Great Start

As reviewed by Jerry Thomas on 7/29/2011

I recently ordered this mandolin for delivery at a guitar center. I had played one years ago, like it, but had no idea if the quality would still be good. I think the offshore manufacturer had changed from Japan to China in the meantime. I only knew that all the other madlins I had tried in the price range either sounded tinny, were hard to play, or displayed rather glaring flaws in finish, binding, frets. I liked the looks of the Washburn M118, however, and read the sparse reviews on the internet, so, with a 30-day free trial period (thanks Guitar Center) decided to take a chance. The mandolin came out of the box(es) set up with bridge intact, almost in tune. After tuning, it played loud and true down the neck. I don't doubt that a bone nut and an ebony bridge would improve the tone somewhat, but for the money, it was great, with smooth, low action and a chunky, wooden sound. I can't say enough about the look of the instrument. The vintage, satin finish and the antiqued hardware are very well done, and make it a pleasure to look at and play. The details at the joinings, bindings, and inlays were flawless. If you play, get one.
