To a discerning and devoted league of tone chasers, Brian Wampler is The King when it comes to organic, convincing and inspiring dirt tones. Thus, Wampler thought it only fitting to name Brian's latest pedal-a simple distortion pedal-The Sovereign.
A little presumptuous, you might say? Wampler thinks this is a pedal that lives up to its name. From cream to ream, thrash to powder puff, hellacious burn to heavenly soothe, The Sovereign will do it for you. Truly.
You see, Brian was asked by a very convincing and influential client (whom we shall name later) to make a "simple distortion pedal." Think for a moment about the amazing distortion pedals Brian has already given us: The Plexi series, the SLOstortion, the ubiquitous Pinnacle and others. How could he top those?
For starters, The Sovereign does not pretend to be another (with all due respect) "A.I.A.B" (amp-in-a-box, for the uninitiated). This beast has its own thing going on. It has a mid control that is admittedly borrowed from other great Wampler pedals like The Pinnacle, but this one is refined, less fussy and instantly gratifying over the full range of its sweep. Seriously rich mids are to be found here, able to cut through the din of the bass and drums in an instant. Smooth, creamy highs-think stainless steel wings on your soaring solos-are a mere flick of a toggle away. The bottom end is tight but with just the right amount of sag to simulate a good tube amp going into orgasmic throes of heat.

Really like this pedal. I was a little surprised how much I had to crank the gain in order to get the level of distortion that I was looking for. The pedal is surprisingly closer to an overdrive box than I had anticipated. However after getting the gain dialed in its been great. Jammed once with it in a small venue and it performed great. Not giving 5 stars as nothing is perfect but this is a nice distortion box that fits more in the genre of fusion/rock. Not for metal players.
The best distortion pedal that i have tried. It make a little noise with high gain, but not is a trouble.
Yeah it's the greatest but everybody says that...what amazes me is that it's quiet with the gain at full bore.
I just picked this baby up yesterday and I can't believe what kind of tones I have dialed in with this pedal.... It's called a distortion pedal but I would say its more of a straight up bad a@# overdive+++++ because notes and chords that were so what muddy are not any longer!!! I have been through so many brands of OD and Distortion pedals and all I can tell you is SAVE your money and buy one.
I've been playing for about 30 years. During this time I have owned several different distortion, fuzz and overdrive pedals. My electric guitar arsenal is dominated by American made Fenders and Gibsons and my amps are both tube powered, a Fender and an Egnater. This pedal is the best distortion pedal I have ever owned or heard. It has a wide range of tones and can easily emulate the tone from any other high quality pedal on the market. It works well with single coils, P 90's, or humbuckers. It works well on it's own or when stacked with other fuzz/overdrive pedals. It can be smooth with just a hint of distortion or it can be an in your face monster or anything in between. Best of all, that tonal animal can be controlled or unleashed by rolling the guitar's volume control of by your pick attack. The Wampler Sovereign is just a well designed, well made pedal with fantastic sound and it will forever have a place on my board.
I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, and have gigged with several different local bands in my area, and the Sovereign is by far the best distortion pedal I have ever played through. Very tight bottom end, and creamy tastefull overdrive tones. Crank the gain up, and it's absolutely distortion heaven. Brian Wampler has been called the king of distortion for a good reason, I have 3 of his pedals now and love every one of them. Don't bother with anything else, get the best, get a Sovereign.
I love this pedal when it is just me and the guitar, but when I am practicing with my band, I cant seem to find the right setting that makes it sound full. It also just seems to not clean up enough for me. It always has a buzz saw distortion even at lowest gain settings. I do bow down to this pedal, but only to make adjustments, then I eventually turn it off after getting a few looks and I kick on my Sparkle Drive. I hope I can find a Mod for the Sovereign that will make it more smooth whith the low gain settings. I know its not an overdrive, but even for my high energy solos with the band, it doesnt cut it for me.
This is my 5th Wampler pedal so already knew quality would be outstanding. This pedal rocks, every control knob and switch does exactly as stated. Super clean, true bypass design, touch sensitive, gets as dirty and edgy as I need, and using your guitar volume knob gives it even more fine controls. So far the controls that set this pedal apart are the bright/even switch, boost/standard switch and mid behavior control. No matter if I am in single coil or humbucker mode these 3 controls I have found make dialing in the tone amazingly effortless. Thumbs up to Guitar Center for selling this Wampler Pedals, now get the rest of his pedals too.
This Wampler Pedal is the BEST distortion that I have played. Cleans up great with the guitar volume. You can adjust very well from slight dirt to all our metal. I took my OCD and vintage hot tubes off of my pedal board as this just does it better. I stack with an EP booster (before and after) to adjust. Before gives it more girth and after a very nice rounded blues tone. I have tried hundreds of dirt boxes and this is the stays on my board.
